00:03ever wondered what humankind's moon base will eventually look like when nasa sets up shop in
00:08the next couple of years well it might look a whole lot like this as 3d printing firm icon has
00:13just been awarded a bid to design that very lunar colony the company was just awarded 57.2 million
00:19dollars to put together plans for habitats on the moon but it's so much more than just an
00:23architectural project the lunar houses laboratories and other buildings are to be 3d printed using
00:29materials found on the moon itself the device will be multi-purpose erecting structures out of lunar
00:34regolith as well as materials found on mars the space agency's current top priority target meaning
00:39nasa is handing over samples from the apollo moon missions for icon to study and create a 3d printing
00:44method from according to the company the final printer will be able to construct more than just
00:48living quarters for humans but also landing pads blast shields and roads which the company's ceo
00:53and co-founder jason ballard says is a shift in nasa and humankind's approach to space moving
00:58forward explaining to change the space exploration paradigm from there and back again to there to
01:04stay we're going to need robust resilient and broadly capable systems that can use the local resources of
