00:00We go to September 21st, 2014, Kobe World Hall, a special singles match here at Destruction in Kobe.
00:10Hi everybody, I'm Kevin Kelly, we're bringing you English commentary on another classic New Japan Pro Wrestling match.
00:17All the great matches available in the archives of njpwworld.com.
00:22And this a match like no other.
00:25Kapsuori Shibata and Hiroshi Tanahashi had just met in the summer in the G1 Climax Tournament, and Shibata got the
00:34victory.
00:35In fact, it looked for a time as if Shibata was going to win the A Block, but it was
00:39not to be.
00:42But what this match is really all about is healing old wounds, about putting the past in the past.
00:51And it goes back to 2005.
01:09Shibata, of course, a product of the New Japan Dojo, was a classmate with Tanahashi.
01:13He, Tanahashi, Shinsuke Nakamura were dubbed the New Three Musketeers.
01:18They were supposed to help New Japan Pro Wrestling rise from some dark times.
01:25However, Shibata had other ideas.
01:32Katsuyori Shibata walked away from New Japan Pro Wrestling.
01:37And in 2005, saying,
01:41I'm not going to be a salaryman wrestler.
01:47Well, that left a lot of bitter feelings, a bad taste in the mouth of many, including Shibata's opponent here
01:57tonight.
02:04And with Tanahashi.
02:07In the win-win order!
02:09Hard, gut, determination, championship glory.
02:15But the pride and love for New Japan Pro Wrestling, tops off.
02:22And it was Tanahashi who may have been at the top of the list as we stare over the shoulder
02:28of Katsuyori Shibata.
02:29And back up the ramp, he sees Tanahashi making his way to the ring.
02:41In Hiroshi Tanahashi's book, he talked about a great deal about Shibata and questioning Shibata's focus in wrestling
02:54and felt that the mixed martial arts style that Shibata likes to bring was more a detriment.
03:02Tanahashi Hiroshi!
03:04Not just to Shibata himself, but to pro wrestling overall.
03:13So, what will happen here in this G1 Climax rematch?
03:23Tanahashi, in his book, said,
03:24I believe the true nature of pro wrestling lies in arousing fans' interests,
03:29making them wonder, where will this fight lead to next?
03:32And he asks, is there a next to Shibata's pro wrestling?
03:43Red Shoes calls for the bell, and here we go.
03:52And of course, Shibata came back through a way that made a lot of people surprised.
04:06A lot of people thought he would never return, but he did.
04:15And there has been a real sense of distrust with Shibata in the locker room.
04:23Who knows, he might just flake out and leave again.
04:29Tanahashi with the waist lock on Shibata.
04:31Their G1 Climax tournament match was a great one.
04:35And Tanahashi had wrestled, I believe, four nights in a row.
04:40Shibata had had one night off.
04:44Perhaps that played a factor.
04:46But Shibata was just a better man that night.
04:49Red Shoes calling for a break.
04:53An aggressive slap across the face.
05:00And they trade four arms.
05:04Not the game.
05:05Tanahashi wants to play as they tear into each other.
05:09A rugged collar and elbow to the side headlock.
05:12Shibata, Tanahashi, sends him off the ropes.
05:14The drop down.
05:15He tries for the drop kick.
05:17Shibata hangs on.
05:17Watch out for that PKO.
05:19Tanahashi just gets out from underneath.
05:32Another collar and elbow tie-up.
05:33You can tell how aggressive these two men are.
05:42Back in the corner.
05:45Not even a thought of a clean break there.
05:48Tanahashi hammers him down with four arms.
05:50Shibata starting to crumble.
05:52But as he starts to go, he spins Tanah around.
05:55And now he's laying the lumber.
05:57Tanah turns it around, though.
05:59An uppercut.
06:00And another.
06:03Uppercut forearms.
06:05But Shibata stays on.
06:07And he'll answer with some uppercuts of his own.
06:12Red Shoes right now is almost letting these two kind of punch themselves out.
06:19At the same time, being careful.
06:26Tanahashi whipped across.
06:27You can see his rubber leg as Shibata comes forward.
06:29The elbow.
06:30He'll go to the springboard.
06:31But Shibata catapults him all the way over the top for the drop kick.
06:37There was so much promise for Katsuyori Shibata and Shinsuke Nakamura and Hiroshi Tanahashi.
06:43They were to lead New Japan Pro Wrestling.
06:48Tanahashi whipped into the barricade.
06:49Shibata comes forward.
06:51And the boot catches Tanah right in the jaw.
06:56But Shibata, who always sort of had that inner conflict within him.
07:03Enigmatic.
07:04Now he's going to send Tanah.
07:06No!
07:07A reversal.
07:08And Shibata hits the buckle.
07:09He comes flying out.
07:10A four.
07:13Neither man wanted to give in to the other.
07:19Red Shoes with the count.
07:25I'm not so sure that they're even paying attention to our referee.
07:30We're at 15 now.
07:3417.
07:3518.
07:3719.
07:38Pay attention, guys.
07:41And they're right back at it.
07:47Rihanna.
07:48Let's play.
08:01Neither man missing on anything.
08:04Neither getting cheated.
08:06Any of those shots could knock the other out in the blink of an eye.
08:12But it's their toughness, their training, and just their damn stubbornness.
08:19After all those strikes, Tanahashi down.
08:22Shibata almost collapsing.
08:24Both men have to be exhausted.
08:36And now, his version of a figure four.
08:43Tanahashi in his book, when Shibata walked away from New Japan Pro Wrestling, he felt that Shibata was like a
08:52junior high student who had just entered his rebellion.
08:55He escapes.
09:03He escapes.
09:04That figure four is locked in.
09:07Tanahashi reaches out.
09:08Shibata says...
09:12He's gonna hit me.
09:15And now Archie goes hips up, as you saw.
09:18And that forces Tanahashi down.
09:24Tanahashi might look to turn this over.
09:27He's a long way from the ropes.
09:32If he can turn it over, it'll reverse the pressure on the figure four.
09:36And then Shibata will have a decision to make.
09:43And turns it over, but uses the momentum to continue the roll into the ropes.
09:48That will force Shibata to let go.
09:52Red Shoes prying the legs apart, but the damage done.
09:55On the knee, the ankle, and great pain in the shin bone as well.
10:03Mid-kicks.
10:05Blasting him.
10:06Tanahashi hangs on.
10:07Hammers down.
10:09Shibata back with another.
10:12And now Tanahashi forced to run, but a flying forearm puts Shibata down.
10:23Tanahashi dropped kick to the knee.
10:32Tanahashi will look to gain control here.
10:38He'll go to the body slam, and now Tanah can go to work.
10:42He can start to wear down the midsection of his opponent.
10:46Somersault senton.
10:48Two.
10:49All of this, of course, folks, in effort to eventually land the high fly flow.
10:55You see the way Tanahashi will use the sling blade as the setup.
11:00That's the final piece of the puzzle.
11:03But the building blocks along the way are what Tanahashi is doing right here, right now.
11:10However, these forearms, much more personal.
11:13Again, this match is more than just about the result as Shibata flies across.
11:20Shibata will not stay down.
11:23He wants to prove that the win over Tanahashi was not a fluke.
11:27Cross body, nobody home, and wide open, my God.
11:35Shibata wants to prove that he left New Japan Pro Wrestling for his reasons.
11:44And he is going to come back to New Japan under his terms, his fighting style.
11:49And now, he's going to do things his way.
11:52And that way is blistering Tanahashi with four arms.
12:00Tanah's getting lower and lower on that bottom rope.
12:03And Shibata now zeroes in and drills him with that stalling drop kick.
12:10He's going to win.
12:11He's going to win.
12:17Shibata left New Japan Pro Wrestling.
12:19Did mixed martial arts.
12:22Competed in the independent ranks of Japanese Pro Wrestling
12:27before eventually returning to New Japan.
12:32Et maintenant, c'est...
12:34Oh !
12:39Chibata avec les pommes-striques.
12:41Tana toujours a la leg.
12:43Je me suis expecting un dragonscrew.
12:46Il est !
12:47Le dragonscrew, le set up pour le cloverleaf.
12:50Le cloverleaf non seulement attacks les legs,
12:53mais aussi le back et le torse.
12:56C'est incroyablement painful.
12:59More of the effort to get to the high fly flow.
13:06And you can't argue with Tanahashi's formula for success.
13:11It has worked.
13:14But for Katsuyori Chibata,
13:16the way to prove that his style of wrestling is superior
13:20is to beat Tanahashi again here.
13:24Now transitioning up.
13:30And arms slipping underneath.
13:33Forearm and the bicep collapsing.
13:36The carotid arteries as Tanahashi gets to the ropes.
13:40Oh, man.
13:41Oh !
13:42Oh !
13:43Oh !
13:43Shibata got dropped.
13:47Red Shoe stepping in to check.
13:50To see if Shibata was knocked out.
13:52He wasn't.
13:53Tana floats over to the top.
13:55And Shibata again drop kicks him down.
13:59Two different times we've seen Tanahashi
14:03look to use that mobility.
14:05And twice Shibata has caught him with drop kicks.
14:08One.
14:08Two.
14:10Three.
14:11Four.
14:13And Shibata not listening to the referee
14:17wanting to do things his way.
14:21A stubborn tenacity with Shibata.
14:27And Tanahashi catches.
14:30Shibata leaning in,
14:31and the dragon screw.
14:35As Shibata was coming in.
14:37Very, very painful there.

19:42Nouvellez !
19:44Nouvellez !
19:45Votre !
19:49Nouvellez !
19:56T ولا !
20:03All right, Shibata now.
20:06Shibata's got the edge.
20:07Oh, a swat of the left hand from Tanahashi.
20:09Drops Shibata.
20:16Shibata got left wide open and was felled by that swat.
20:26Whoa, again.
20:31Now, Tanahashi down.
20:43Up on the shoulders.
20:45Here we go.
20:49Drag and screw Leg Whip instead.
20:59Shibata defeated Tanahashi back on July 26.
21:04Oh, my God.
21:05A page out of Shibata's book.
21:15Tanahashi now.
21:17He'll go to the top.
21:18Shibata on his face.
21:21Can't see it coming.
21:24Tana's waiting, waiting.
21:26Aces high.
21:29Now he'll spring.
21:32Will Shibata have an answer for the high?
21:37Fly.
21:38Oh, got it.
21:50Hiroshi Tanahashi avenging the defeat at the hands of Katsuyori Shibata back in July and getting an all-important win.
22:11New Japan matchmakers were quick to sign the rematch from the G1, but no tournament at stake.
22:20No titles on the line, this just a special singles match.
22:26And there certainly was great box office attraction for this matchup, but really what there was, was settling a grudge.
22:38And putting the past in the past, at least, that's the hope.
22:44The man of talent, Hiroshi Tanahashi!
22:50Tanahashi on the climb now, heading back to the IWGP Heavyweight Championship again.
23:03Just too much Ace, just too much.
23:07Shibata could not stop the Dragon Screw Leg Whips.
23:15Tanahashi was able to avoid disaster, especially early on with the PKs.
23:25Now the question is, what will be next between these two?
23:39The only memory, said Tanahashi, of me and Mr. Shibata spending time together was as Young Lions.
23:48So I said something like, this reminds me of when we were Young Lions.
23:51I was hoping that would move Mr. Shibata's heart.
23:55But his reply to me was so much bigger.
23:57Thank you for the past ten years.
23:59Thank you for protecting New Japan Pro Wrestling.
24:02It was the most unlikely thing Shibata would say.
24:05And that shook me emotionally.
24:10I mean, it's a once in a lifetime experience.
24:18Put the past in the past and move on.
24:23This is how you settle things.
24:26This is how you settle things.
24:28So Tanahashi wins in sensational fashion.
24:37Katsuyori Shibata would go on to championship glory.
24:46And the cheers.
24:48The respect shown by Shibata.
24:57And at this moment in time, Shibata's words are really sinking in.
25:02They would certainly stay with Tanahashi forever.
25:07So Hiroshi Tanahashi wins this special singles match.
25:14And there are so many great moments in the archives of NJPWworld.com.
25:18Not just of Hiroshi Tanahashi, but for Katsuyori Shibata as well.
25:29The ace would certainly close out 2014 with Flourish.
25:37And that story unfolds in the archives of NJPWworld.
25:42I want to thank fans from all over the world for tuning in.
25:48As the fans here in Kobe back in September of 2014 celebrate with a victorious ace.
26:02There is nothing better than New Japan Pro Wrestling.
26:06NJPWworld.com, the king of sports streaming.
26:10And I'm Kevin Kelly.
26:12I want to thank you for joining us.
26:14Hiroshi Tanahashi has defeated Katsuyori Shibata here in Kobe.
26:20September 21st, 2014.
