AAA gaming is collapsing under the weight of its own budgets, and Steam may have been the final trigger.
Modern blockbuster games can cost hundreds of millions of dollars to develop and market. That means every release has to become a massive hit just to break even. When it doesn’t, the fallout is brutal.
Games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Concord, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avowed show how quickly a huge investment can unravel when players reject the final product. And Steam changed the rules.
User reviews now appear directly where players make buying decisions. A “Mixed” rating can slash conversion rates, while a strong review score can dramatically increase sales. Publishers can no longer rely on cinematic trailers, pre-orders, brand recognition, or massive marketing campaigns to hide a disappointing launch.
At the same time, games like Helldivers 2 proved the opposite. A lower price, strong word of mouth, and a product players genuinely enjoyed turned it into a massive success without needing the same bloated spending.
Steam didn’t create AAA gaming’s problems, but it gave players a way to expose them instantly. And in an industry where a single failure can cost hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of jobs, that may be enough to break the old AAA model for good.
