00:00:14A long time ago, in a principality far, far away, a young Jedi named Fernando Alonso stormed the Formula 1
00:00:21galaxy, scoring victories in three of the first four battles.
00:00:26But Kimi Räikkönen took revenge for San Marino as he helped the McLaren Empire strike back with a decisive victory
00:00:33in Alonso's homeland.
00:00:35But beware of Formula 1's reigning Emperor, for on the streets of Monte Carlo the Force is strong with this
00:00:40one.
00:00:40And this Jedi Grand Master will need to call upon all his powers to prevent his season from slipping toward
00:00:45the Dark Sun.
00:00:46Today's episode brings new hope as the battlefield shifts yet again.
00:00:51The Jedi Masters of Formula 1 taking to the streets of the old Republic, Monaco.
00:00:56The stars go to war in first round qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix. Next.
00:01:01We would be honored if you would join us.
00:01:11And if there's one place on the planet where fantasy meets reality, it is here in the Principality of Monaco.
00:01:19Hello everyone, I'm Bob Varsha alongside David Hobbs and Steve Matchett, ready for first round qualifying for the grandest Grand
00:01:26Prix of all.
00:01:27First, we'd like to thank George Lucas and the folks at Lucasfilm, who we know are huge Formula 1 fans,
00:01:32for them allowing us to use footage from their new film, Revenge of the Sith, in our program.
00:01:36Of course, it is opening all across the world this weekend.
00:01:40And the stars of the show are in Monaco.
00:01:43But today in Monaco is all about qualifying.
00:01:45And when it comes to qualifying, of course, one driver embodied what it means to start from pole position.
00:01:51He is the late and legendary Ayrton Senna, who sat on pole here in Monaco five times, one of those
00:01:57in 1990.
00:01:58Today we have a special treat for you, a portion of a rare interview from 1990,
00:02:02in which Senna describes what qualifying in Monaco is all about,
00:02:06and then enjoy the master at work in his McLaren.
00:02:17Qualifying is a real sprint there, more than any other circuit.
00:02:20It's a tremendous sprint.
00:02:24And sometimes it takes so much energy, so much concentration,
00:02:28that you really see nothing else other than the narrow road, the armicles, the walls, and your wheels.
00:02:37Because you're positioning your wheels with the armicle all the time.
00:02:43And you are cutting it as close as that, going at 100, 200, 250 kilometers an hour.
00:02:51So it's a tremendous excitement to drive around Monaco.
00:02:56It's a tremendous theme, and it's also kind of a finalmente dive at the journey.
00:03:00The next one is, Evan Wabo.
00:03:02And I am a little bit, though.
00:03:03If you're thinking of knowing what you're saying.
00:03:03I have aבה of RMF, you can't let me know what you're trying to do with your mother.
00:03:03But I had to say, I know what you're saying.
00:03:07See if you ask.
00:03:07I had a few words here.
00:03:13I have some answers.
00:03:15I can't see any of my entire triggers.
00:03:15I've got captured by a girl and I've got history.
00:03:17I'm trying to know what I can see you in.
00:03:54Mancena brought plenty of
00:03:55smiles to the lips of his team principal Ron Dennis over the years kind of makes the hair stand up
00:04:00on your neck to see that again and to hear the voice of Senna. Boy it does and also it
00:04:04brings back to the difficulty of gear shifting to see the way he was shifting gears everywhere I mean it's
00:04:09so much easier now those paddles shift there's no doubt about it and it was a big a big opportunity
00:04:15for Aaron all that gear shifting especially around here and you can see how narrow it was that swimming pool
00:04:20section of course has changed a lot now where they've taken that guardrail away.
00:04:23Well speaking of the racetrack let's turn now to our Porsche track map and examine it David.
00:04:37Good.
00:04:38One left-handed you can't see around it at all because the guardrail is right in front of the top
00:04:42of his eyes through the casino square streeply downhill to Mirabeau then the tightest hairpin in all the Formula One
00:04:48that Grand Hotel hairpin still going downhill through Portier there as you turn left to go along the right to
00:04:54go along the sea front through the tunnel bursting out of the tunnel into bright sunshine heavy braking to the
00:04:59Nouvelle Chicane then through that left-handed to back and then you see that PC and screen pool section which
00:05:04has now opened up considerably.
00:05:05All that guardrail that we just saw in that footage from center has now gone away and then of course
00:05:09La Rascasse very tight hairpin as is the Virage Anthony Noguez.
00:05:14Difficult corners here and of course you're threading the eye of a needle all the time.
00:05:21And here's a look at the running order based on the results of the most recent round of the world
00:05:26championship in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago.
00:05:29How important is qualifying around the streets of Monaco well consider in the 51 previous runnings of the Formula One
00:05:36World Championship in Monaco the race winner has come from the top three on the grid 41 times including the
00:05:44pole sitter 19 times.
00:05:46There's the world championship leader these are live pictures from Monaco that is Fernando Alonso who dominated the final practice
00:05:53this morning along with his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:05:57There is Kimi Raikkonen a real threat for pole the McLarens are also going well here Raikkonen third quick in
00:06:02this morning's practice Giancarlo Fisichella did a 13-9 around this place.
00:06:07Kimi Raikkonen one of those guys too that has deep reserves that he can call on he looking pretty relaxed
00:06:14here knowing he's going into this two-part qualifying coming up but he is one of those guys that really
00:06:19can dig deep when he needs to.
00:06:21Makes a few mistakes now and then Alonso of course also very very cool carmen collected of course one of
00:06:27the youngest drivers in the field still only 23 years old doesn't make many mistakes now either.
00:06:32No he doesn't a much more mature driver as we saw at the Grand Prix of San Marino when he
00:06:37kept Michael Schumacher behind him for 12 laps.
00:06:40Boy oh boy Ann was slowing down all the time so he didn't get involved in lap traffic.
00:06:44Here comes the first man on track Vidantonio Luzzi and his final appearance of his three race run for the
00:06:50Red Bull team carrying the livery of the new Star Wars Revenge of the Sith movie.
00:06:58Up the hill he goes to Casino Square.
00:07:01The Star Wars crew very much a part of the action in Monaco this weekend.
00:07:06Here's an example of what we're talking about.
00:07:08Darth Vader accompanied by troopers.
00:07:10Cast members there's George Lucas in the yellow shirt.
00:07:13A true car guy and a huge fan of Formula One.
00:07:17We'll be back in a moment to see how Vidantonio Luzzi does.
00:07:22The channel's coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship is brought to you by Acura and by new Mobile
00:07:29One extended performance.
00:07:30The oil that's changing oil.
00:07:35Welcome back slightly overcast day in Monte Carlo.
00:07:39First round qualifying for the Formula One Grand Prix of Monaco.
00:07:43Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, Steve Matchett with you.
00:07:45This is Vidantonio Luzzi and the Red Bull Cosworth on the clock.
00:07:51Of course the track map doesn't do justice to this circuit.
00:07:55That's that first corner Sandovo.
00:07:56Pretty steep uphill climb here.
00:07:58But just look at that guardrail right to the edge of the road.
00:08:00Absolutely nowhere to go.
00:08:02This is Massonet, this long, long left-hander.
00:08:04Drops away steeply.
00:08:05Ooh!
00:08:06Into the Casino Square.
00:08:07Big bump coming up there.
00:08:09Always swerve around to miss it.
00:08:11Ooh!
00:08:12Into Mirabeau.
00:08:13Around that sharp corner.
00:08:14Now the tightest corner in Formula One.
00:08:17The Grand Hotel Hairpin.
00:08:20And down round the right-hander to Portier.
00:08:23Prepare to enter the tunnel.
00:08:25Now today they've got, as Bob said, it's slightly overcast.
00:08:28So the difference going into and out of the tunnel is not quite as bad as it sometimes.
00:08:33It's the sun shines right on the exit there.
00:08:35To the Nouvelle Chicane.
00:08:37And round into the Harbour Complex.
00:08:40You've got to make the suspension as compliant as possible here.
00:08:43It's very, you need very good mechanical grip.
00:08:46It's that PC complex which has been opened up quite a bit.
00:08:53Cosworth engine just shy 178, 179 miles an hour.
00:08:58From the 2005 spec V10 Ford.
00:09:01And that's pumping out a lot of horsepower.
00:09:03That engine's a good lump to have.
00:09:10116.817.
00:09:11Light on fuel.
00:09:12That's a bit of a surprise.
00:09:13Liuzzi was able to go around in 115-0 in this morning's practice.
00:09:17Oh!
00:09:18And that may be why right there.
00:09:19Yeah, you saw the rear end slide just at the approach coming into Casino Square.
00:09:23There it is again on board from Liuzzi's car.
00:09:26Seems to have got a bit of understeer on this car to me.
00:09:28You watch it when he go...
00:09:28Oh!
00:09:28Well, he goes through Mirabeau there.
00:09:30We saw Claudio on the steer.
00:09:33Now, remember, these are all on very low fuel.
00:09:36It's a low fuel run.
00:09:37Just enough fuel to do one flying lap.
00:09:40This is Patrick Friesacker, in the minority, who's been quicker than the Jordan Toyotas all weekend.
00:09:53The noise of these engines around the streets of Monaco is just a fantastic sound because the sound is unable
00:10:00to escape anywhere.
00:10:02It just echoes and reverberates from the buildings, deafening in the pit lane.
00:10:06I mean, it's impossible to communicate without radio communication between the engineers and the mechanics.
00:10:11Simply can't make yourself heard at all.
00:10:13I just can't imagine what it's like to be a master in that tunnel all day.
00:10:16The noise in there must be absolutely excruciating.
00:10:21182.3 miles an hour.
00:10:28Through the Louis Chiron corner, named for the former doorman who raced here in his home Grand Prix in 1955
00:10:36at the age of 55.
00:10:39Also a winner of the other great world championship event that takes place here at Monaco, the Monte Carlo Rally.
00:10:49Oh, Friesacker, well slower than the Red Bull.
00:10:54118.5.
00:10:55Of course, we use the words Monte Carlo and Monaco interchangeably here.
00:10:59There's a reason for that.
00:11:00We'll be back.
00:11:06Welcome back to first of two rounds of this.
00:11:08The rounds of qualifying for the Formula One Grand Prix of Monaco.
00:11:11Live here on Speed Channel.
00:11:13Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, Steve Matchett with you.
00:11:15This is Christian Albers in the second minority.
00:11:18His teammate, Patrick Friesacker, is currently P2 on the provisional grid behind provisional pole sitter with Antonio Luzzi.
00:11:27Christian Albers has not been as quick as Friesacker this weekend in any of the sessions so far.
00:11:31And he's normally quicker than Friesacker, but Albers has never been to Monte Carlo before.
00:11:36Friesacker, of course, has raced Formula 3000 here.
00:11:39Has a bit of experience, but it's not like Albers to be slower than Friesacker, but he has been most
00:11:43of the sessions this weekend.
00:11:45Well, all the drivers have been saying the same thing.
00:11:48They need to put laps in at Monaco to get familiar with how the track works, to get familiar with
00:11:54the layout.
00:11:54I mean, it's a very classic track that everyone knows every corner, of course.
00:11:58But all the drivers are saying, you know, it's such a unique track and so much emphasis is placed on
00:12:02driver ability here,
00:12:04as opposed to the car helping the driver that everybody wants to put lap after lap in to familiarize themselves
00:12:11with exactly how far they can push the car under brake.
00:12:13And, of course, there's a lot of bumps here. You see those curves they've got to use. I mean, it
00:12:18takes a lot of getting used to that.
00:12:19Of course, you've got to get the car set up right to use those bumps.
00:12:23And Albers slower than his teammate, 119-2.
00:12:28But that is a half second quicker than he went in this morning's final practice.
00:12:33Look at the man in the tunnel. As you watch the cars go around,
00:12:36recall that video of the late Ayrton Senna we saw at the beginning of the program.
00:12:41Monaco hasn't changed much, although the racetrack has improved a bit over the years.
00:12:50Here comes the seventh time and defending world champion. His team in almost complete disarray.
00:12:58This is Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari.
00:13:01And this is a team that really has no ready answer for the problems they've suffered coming into this weekend.
00:13:09In the 14 races he's done here, he's only been off the front row four or five times.
00:13:15And he's won this race five times, probably should have won it six or seven by now,
00:13:19but just has failed too, and I don't think he's going to win it this year.
00:13:22There he was a tenth of a second quicker than the provisional pole setter beat Antonio Luzzi in the first
00:13:27sector.
00:13:28But that's not what Ferrari are looking for, to being a tenth of a second quick in the Red Bull.
00:13:32They're looking to be probably a second quicker on that sort of sector.
00:13:36There he is.
00:13:42Through to back.
00:13:43Then Chiron.
00:13:47Keep in mind, Luzzi made a mistake on his run.
00:13:52Around the raskets.
00:14:00This will determine his place in second round qualifying on race morning.
00:14:05Six tenths of a second quicker.
00:14:07Schumacher goes to P1, but not for long.
00:14:11Well, that's seven tenths of a second quicker than he went this morning, but still in all not good enough.
00:14:18There's Michael in the tunnel.
00:14:20A year ago, his race came to an end in that tunnel when he collided with the Williams of Juan
00:14:25Pablo Montoya,
00:14:27ending Michael's bid for a sixth straight victory to begin the season.
00:14:34Right now, he'd be glad to have one.
00:14:38Here comes 97 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve of Canada in the Sauber.
00:14:50Ferrari engine, of course, in the back of the Sauber.
00:14:52It's bad as the Patronus, but it is a 2005 spec Ferrari V10.
00:15:01And he's quicker than Michael Schumacher in the first sector.
00:15:08That's a nice overhead shot, isn't it?
00:15:10Run down to Portier.
00:15:12Portier, the gate section is on the left there, just as the cars turn to the right and into the
00:15:17tunnel.
00:15:18Michael's time is absolutely dreadful.
00:15:20I mean, he did a 14-8 this morning.
00:15:23There's a 16-1 for his first upper qualifying with no fuel on board.
00:15:27Doesn't bode well.
00:15:28182.5 miles an hour for the Sauber.
00:15:34Quickest so far, 187.5 is the Renault engine hurling that car around the swimming pool.
00:15:55Oh, and by two-tenths of a second, he beats his old sparring partner, Michael Schumacher, to take provisional pole.
00:16:02Look at the expression on Jean Todd's face.
00:16:04Oh, it says it all, doesn't it?
00:16:05Oh, man.
00:16:09We talked about it yesterday.
00:16:11Bridgestone has brought what they thought was a fairly revolutionary tire that might get their season back on track with
00:16:18Ferrari.
00:16:18But thus far, it does not appear to be working well, perhaps having trouble getting heat into it.
00:16:24Look at that thing flexing on the rim.
00:16:26Yeah.
00:16:27That's the Michelin example on the Sauber.
00:16:29Well, there's no doubt at all, all year long, that Michelin have certainly had the upper hand on their Japanese
00:16:35rivals, Bridgestone.
00:16:37But you're right, Bob.
00:16:38We understand Bridgestone have brought three compounds here, three compounds and three constructions.
00:16:43Two of the old type and one of this new family of polymers, as they describe it as.
00:16:47And that's the one they're pitting their hopes on.
00:16:50Looking at Ferrari's pace so far this morning, we can only assume that they're hoping that the tire will come
00:16:55alive in the later stages of the race because it's certainly off the pace in qualifying trimmed in comparison to
00:17:01the Michelin.
00:17:02That's staggeringly off the pace.
00:17:05I mean, they're going to end up being two or three seconds.
00:17:08There's Olivier Panis, winner of this race in 1996, his only Formula One victory in the Lige.
00:17:16And we understand that Panis will be back.
00:17:18He'll be doing the Friday testing for the Toyota team when we go to Manicourt for the French Grand Prix
00:17:23in July.
00:17:24There is Michael Schumacher.
00:17:27What a difference a year has made in the life of a seven-time world champion.
00:17:31Perhaps the greatest driver ever in Formula One, but he and Ferrari are having the problems now.
00:18:15Welcome back to Monaco.
00:18:16Monte Carlo actually is just a small commercial sector in this tiny principality.
00:18:21Just three quarters of a square mile in size.
00:18:24The second smallest sovereign nation on earth.
00:18:26Governed since the late 13th century by the Grimaldi family.
00:18:30Who of course lost to Serene Highness Prince Renier back on April 6th.
00:18:35The entire community is still in mourning.
00:18:37But this is Grand Prix weekend.
00:18:41Now on track.
00:18:44Naren Karthikeyan of India.
00:18:47In the Jordan Toyota.
00:18:50The other neighborhoods that make up Monaco are the Old Town, the Rock on which the Royal Palace sits.
00:18:56And the Hotel District at Fontville.
00:19:01There's a good on-board shot there, that Masson-Acorn.
00:19:04You can see how difficult it is for the driver to see around it.
00:19:09Well off the pace at the first sector.
00:19:12Karthikeyan has been quicker than his teammate, Monteiro, all year, pretty much.
00:19:15And obviously he's brand new to this circuit.
00:19:19But he hasn't been doing this well this weekend as Monteiro.
00:19:22The car looking very twitchy.
00:19:26Jordan once started from the front row for the Monaco Grand Prix.
00:19:30That was back in 2000.
00:19:31And the driver was Jarno Trulli.
00:19:34Currently with Toyota.
00:19:36After a stint with Renault.
00:19:39Winner last year.
00:19:41And winner here, yes.
00:19:43Whoa!
00:19:44Well, you're talking about the car.
00:19:45He's working hard, isn't he?
00:19:48The car is looking nervous.
00:19:50Boy, three seconds off of that second sector.
00:19:53He's going to be, really, he's going to be slower than Alvin.
00:19:56He is fence to fence all the way around.
00:20:03He's shifting up very quickly.
00:20:05Very close gear ratios around this place to keep the engines up on the cams.
00:20:11119.474.
00:20:13He's slower than both Minardis.
00:20:16The reaction from the mechanics in the Jordan Pitner said it all.
00:20:21No grip.
00:20:23The rumor this weekend is that this team may change hands again soon.
00:20:28The Russian-born Canadian, Alex Schneider, who bought it during the offseason,
00:20:31is rumored to be losing interest in Formula One.
00:20:34And he may sell out to another consortium headed by former Formula One driver, Eddie Irvine.
00:20:42We'll hear from Eddie Irvine in tomorrow's...
00:20:45And, excuse me, from Alex Schneider, the team owner,
00:20:47who rarely gives interviews.
00:20:49But our Peter Windsor collared him for our Acura pre-race show on Sunday.
00:20:54Now, watch the hash mark to the left there.
00:20:56You see all the drivers pull around.
00:20:58There's a big bump right to the left-hand side of the road.
00:21:01And it's marked by white and black checkerboard effect.
00:21:06Tell the drivers where it is, but you certainly don't want to be running over that.
00:21:10It's a very bumpy track of course.
00:21:12It's made up of public roads.
00:21:15The downside of that for the engineers,
00:21:17they have to lift the right eye to the cars.
00:21:19Higher than they would like.
00:21:20It's about five to eight millimeters,
00:21:23about five sixteenths of an inch higher than they would like to run,
00:21:26just because it's made up of such awful public roads.
00:21:30The engineers want to run the car as low as possible to the track,
00:21:33because it speeds up the airflow beneath the car,
00:21:36and adds downforce onto the car, which is exactly what these guys want now.
00:21:41More downforce to make that thing stick to the road.
00:21:44More downforce.
00:21:45These guys want a lot more mechanical grip, by the way.
00:21:48Another team on Firestone, on the Bridgestones, with Ferrari.
00:21:57In to 60 goes.
00:21:59So both of the Jordans are slower than both of the Minardis.
00:22:04That will lead to much rejoicing for the little Italian team.
00:22:08We'll be back in a moment for more first-round qualifying from Monaco.
00:22:14Back on the streets of Monaco.
00:22:17Fantasy world of ever there was one.
00:22:19First-round qualifying for the Formula One Grand Prix of Monaco,
00:22:22which you'll see live here on Speed Channel Sunday.
00:22:25On board with Felipe Massa, who missed this morning's first practice
00:22:30after a crash on Thursday in first practice.
00:22:34But he went out in the second practice
00:22:38and did a 1.16.1 in his Sauber.
00:22:42Wow, look at that.
00:22:43Slower than Villeneuve.
00:22:44This is going to be an upset for Massa this year.
00:22:47He's been significantly quicker sometimes than Jack Villeneuve all year,
00:22:51but this weekend Villeneuve's had the upper hand most of the weekend
00:22:55and looks like he has still at the moment.
00:22:58But Felipe Massa is still quicker than Michael Schumacher
00:23:02for this part of the track.
00:23:03So pretty grim day for Ferrari and Schumacher.
00:23:13Can you imagine if both Ferrari customer cars
00:23:16are faster than both of Ferrari's factory cars this weekend?
00:23:23Well, he should end up second fastest,
00:23:25which won't be good enough for him
00:23:26because he'll be slower than his teammate.
00:23:28Sun is coming out.
00:23:29You see the shadows.
00:23:30That'll heat up the racetrack.
00:23:31It was about 99 degrees when we started Fahrenheit.
00:23:35The air temperature about 72 degrees.
00:23:38Slower than Schumacher is Felipe Massa,
00:23:40but that's cold comfort to the Ferrari team.
00:23:44A little lock up there at the left front.
00:23:46Bang.
00:23:47Going over that...
00:23:49Going over that chicane there.
00:23:51Locks up here.
00:23:52Left front.
00:23:53Of course, you've got to be very careful
00:23:54locking up these tires during this qualifying
00:23:55because those are the tires you've got
00:23:56for the rest of today and tomorrow.
00:23:58Of course, it's hard to flat spot them
00:24:00when that left front is right up off the ground.
00:24:03Around Rescasse,
00:24:04a lovely restaurant,
00:24:06and perhaps the best seat in all of motorsports
00:24:09comes Nick Heidfeld of Germany
00:24:11in the BMW Williams.
00:24:14He's been a winner on this circuit,
00:24:16his former 3,000.
00:24:18But not having a great weekend again.
00:24:20He's been severely trounced so far
00:24:23in most of the sessions by his teammate
00:24:25Mark Webber, the Australian.
00:24:29Nick Heidfeld on the podium in Malaysia
00:24:31in this car.
00:24:35Slower than Villeneuve now.
00:24:37I don't expect he expected that.
00:24:42Heidfeld turned 28 just a few days
00:24:44after the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.
00:24:51He's quicker than Michael Schumacher,
00:24:52but he needs to be quicker than Villeneuve.
00:25:06Well, they're certainly pushing the Revs
00:25:07to try and get performance out of this thing.
00:25:09Look, it's 18.5, 18.7.
00:25:14Picked up some time there on Villeneuve.
00:25:18Keep it together around here.
00:25:20Look at the way they thread the needle here.
00:25:22Yeah, and the throttle.
00:25:24Push, push.
00:25:27Hey, yeah.
00:25:29By nearly eight-tenths of a second,
00:25:32Heidfeld goes to P1.
00:25:34That is slightly quicker than he went
00:25:35this morning in practice,
00:25:36a 15.1 as opposed to a 15.296.
00:25:38So he'd be pretty happy with that.
00:25:40Obviously, he messed up somewhat
00:25:42in that first sector,
00:25:43losing a bit of time.
00:25:44But all in all,
00:25:46I suppose he'd be pretty happy with that time.
00:25:47Well, it was here a couple of years ago
00:25:49where the Williams really came to life.
00:25:51If you remember when Frank Durney,
00:25:53the old-school engineer
00:25:54that was brought back into the Williams team
00:25:56to try and get the car to work,
00:25:58and he said,
00:25:59we're running the car too stiff.
00:26:00We need to get more mechanical grip out of it.
00:26:02And they developed some springs
00:26:04and re-jigged the suspension
00:26:06back at Grove in England
00:26:07and flew the pieces out for the race,
00:26:09and it transformed the car.
00:26:10And David,
00:26:11as you were saying earlier on,
00:26:12you need mechanical grip around here.
00:26:14Well, the old Williams that,
00:26:16excuse me,
00:26:16the FW27 Williams have got here
00:26:18has always been a little bit dodgy
00:26:19on aerodynamics.
00:26:20They've been working flat out
00:26:21in the winter to understand that.
00:26:23But certainly,
00:26:23they seem to have got that Williams
00:26:25working a lot better than this car,
00:26:28the 2005 Ferrari,
00:26:29and in the hands of Barrichello.
00:26:31Barrichello's had some problems already.
00:26:33They've had electrical problems on the car,
00:26:34which has limited his running.
00:26:36He wasn't happy at all
00:26:37with the balance and handling of the car
00:26:39on Thursday.
00:26:41He's had a grim weekend.
00:26:42He's been slow to Michael all weekend,
00:26:44but up until now,
00:26:46I think he's picking up some time on Schumacher.
00:26:50Well, he was certainly pushing
00:26:52very hard out of the tunnel, wasn't he?
00:26:53Again, a little locket coming down
00:26:55into the Nouvelle chicane.
00:26:57One of the most positive guys
00:26:58you'd ever want to meet.
00:26:59But this weekend,
00:27:01Barrichello said the Ferraris may be lacked.
00:27:05What are we lacking, says Barrichello?
00:27:07Simple.
00:27:08Everything.
00:27:09Half a second slower than Nick Heidfeld.
00:27:12Boy, that wouldn't have been in
00:27:13Rubens Barrichello's game plan.
00:27:17Look at that.
00:27:18Into third spot
00:27:19and bumping his teammate,
00:27:21the seven-time world champion,
00:27:22Michael Schumacher.
00:27:23A good effort under the circumstances
00:27:25for Rubens Barrichello.
00:27:27Here's Barrichello in the tunnel.
00:27:28We're having another look at him,
00:27:29how he handles that.
00:27:29But remember,
00:27:30it is a low-fuel run,
00:27:32so we can't say
00:27:33that any of the teammates
00:27:34are running more or less fuel
00:27:36than the competition.
00:27:37This is a straight comparison
00:27:38between cars
00:27:40and, of course,
00:27:41between the tyre suppliers.
00:27:42There's that little lock-up again
00:27:43as the weight transfer
00:27:44shift to the right-hand side
00:27:45at the entrance
00:27:46of that Nouvelle chicane.
00:27:48A little,
00:27:48a little bit of a flat spot,
00:27:50but not much.
00:27:51But, you know,
00:27:52he's got to live with it.
00:27:53You can see it going around there.
00:27:57But that will give him
00:27:58some vibration
00:27:58through the steering wheel.
00:27:59Look at the car
00:28:00just bouncing around there
00:28:01because so much
00:28:02of the springing
00:28:03on these Formula 1 cars
00:28:04now is done through the tyres.
00:28:05Very,
00:28:06very tall sidewalls
00:28:08over the kerb.
00:28:10Why it's lifting
00:28:11the front tyres up
00:28:12in that way
00:28:12is because they have
00:28:13such soft spring
00:28:14on the rear of the car
00:28:16to aid the traction.
00:28:17Of course,
00:28:18the cars are allowed
00:28:18to run traction control,
00:28:19but that's only
00:28:20an aid to mechanical grip.
00:28:22And the way
00:28:23that the engineers
00:28:23work the mechanical grip
00:28:24is to soften up,
00:28:26make the car move
00:28:26a little bit,
00:28:27softer roll bars,
00:28:28sway bars onto the car here.
00:28:30But by virtue of having
00:28:31that very soft suspension
00:28:32on the rear,
00:28:33it lifts the front
00:28:34of the car up.
00:28:35In a way,
00:28:35when you see the cars
00:28:36have a puncture
00:28:37on the left rear,
00:28:37you'll see the right front pick up.
00:28:39Well, it's a sort of
00:28:39moderate version
00:28:40of what we're seeing right there.
00:28:41There's Patrick Head
00:28:43for so many years,
00:28:44partner and technical
00:28:45director
00:28:46for Sir Frank Williams' team.
00:28:49Tough days
00:28:50for Williams as well.
00:28:51Perhaps the most
00:28:52successful team
00:28:53of the 90s
00:28:55is Mark Webber.
00:28:57We'll be coming up shortly.
00:28:58We'll be back
00:28:59to Monaco after this.
00:29:04Speed Channel's coverage
00:29:05of the FIA Formula One
00:29:07World Championship
00:29:07is brought to you
00:29:08by Michelin,
00:29:09a better way forward.
00:29:11And by new
00:29:11Mobile One
00:29:12Extended Performance,
00:29:13the oil that's changing oil.
00:29:30Welcome back to Monaco.
00:29:31Looking at some
00:29:32highlighted coverage
00:29:33of previous qualifiers.
00:29:35This is Nick Heidfeld,
00:29:36currently provisional
00:29:37pole center
00:29:37with a lap
00:29:38at 1 minute 15.128 seconds.
00:29:41Compare that with
00:29:43the lap record
00:29:44or the pole record.
00:29:46Yarno Trulli
00:29:47last year
00:29:47at 113.985.
00:29:49Better than a
00:29:50100 mile an hour
00:29:51average speed
00:29:53around these
00:29:54tight,
00:29:54twisty,
00:29:55slippery,
00:29:56off-camber streets.
00:29:59David Coulthard,
00:30:00two-time winner here,
00:30:01taking the track
00:30:02in his Red Bull car.
00:30:06David Coulthard,
00:30:07one of several drivers
00:30:08to reach the Armco
00:30:10this morning.
00:30:11He had a three-way
00:30:12accident
00:30:14with Jacques Villeneuve
00:30:15and Ralph Schumacher.
00:30:17Juan Pablo Montoya
00:30:18also hit the Armco.
00:30:20He's always qualified
00:30:21well here,
00:30:22old David.
00:30:22He was third
00:30:23the very first time
00:30:23he came here,
00:30:241995.
00:30:24He's qualified
00:30:25on the front row
00:30:26in 98.
00:30:27He was third
00:30:28in 99
00:30:29and 00
00:30:30in 2000
00:30:31and on the pole
00:30:31here in 01.
00:30:33And then of course
00:30:34he had that problem
00:30:35on the stall.
00:30:35It stalled at the start.
00:30:38There was the time
00:30:39he drove here
00:30:40wearing Michael Schumacher's
00:30:42spare helmet.
00:30:44So he knows
00:30:45his way around here.
00:30:45Of course he lives here
00:30:46so he ought to know
00:30:47his way around.
00:30:50Owns a five-star hotel
00:30:51in the Principality,
00:30:52does David.
00:30:53It's called
00:30:53the Columbus Hotel.
00:30:54The McLaren crew
00:30:55is staying there
00:30:56this weekend.
00:30:57David smiled this week
00:30:58and said
00:30:58they're spending
00:30:59a lot of money
00:31:00in the bar.
00:31:02Yeah,
00:31:02the McLaren mechanics
00:31:03will do that for you.
00:31:04The guys had to do
00:31:05a lot of work
00:31:06to this car
00:31:06to get it ready
00:31:07for qualifying.
00:31:08They changed
00:31:08the rear end
00:31:09onto the car.
00:31:10The monocoque
00:31:10remained the same.
00:31:11They managed
00:31:11to save that
00:31:12in the engine.
00:31:13The whole rear suspension
00:31:14and transmission
00:31:15has been changed
00:31:15and they had to
00:31:16pinch some parts
00:31:17off of the spare car
00:31:18to get the thing
00:31:19ready for qualifying
00:31:20after that shunt
00:31:21this morning.
00:31:22Well,
00:31:22David Coulthard
00:31:23having a good run
00:31:23here and if he's
00:31:24not going to make
00:31:24his money on the track
00:31:25he's going to make
00:31:26it in the hotel
00:31:27$800 a night minimum
00:31:28for a five-night
00:31:29minimum stay.
00:31:30So,
00:31:30David County
00:31:31managed the bank
00:31:33everywhere he goes
00:31:34this weekend.
00:31:37Quickest in that second sector
00:31:38so quicker than the BMW
00:31:40of Williams
00:31:41of Heidefelt.
00:31:43David Coulthard
00:31:44has been showing
00:31:45speed all weekend.
00:31:47That's Bob Selle
00:31:48that unfortunate
00:31:50crash this morning
00:31:51which involved
00:31:51about four of them
00:31:53and...
00:31:53No!
00:31:54Oh boy,
00:31:55lost a lot of time
00:31:56in the last sector.
00:31:56He did.
00:31:57But still,
00:31:58a great lap.
00:32:00And...
00:32:02Oh yeah.
00:32:03Of course,
00:32:03Wookiees are famous
00:32:05for their Formula One
00:32:06interest.
00:32:11There's still a lot of dust
00:32:12in that tunnel.
00:32:13Isn't that amazing
00:32:13considering they've been
00:32:15here all weekend?
00:32:15Well,
00:32:16there are some other
00:32:16supporting events
00:32:17going on this weekend.
00:32:18You'll notice a big pool
00:32:19of speedy dry
00:32:20down at Rescas
00:32:22just offline.
00:32:24There it is
00:32:25just at the top
00:32:26of your picture.
00:32:27There's the first
00:32:28of the McLarens
00:32:29in the hands
00:32:30of one Pablo Montoya.
00:32:32A winner here
00:32:33two years ago.
00:32:36Now here,
00:32:37this is probably
00:32:37the ultimate embodiment
00:32:39in contemporary Formula One
00:32:40of a guy
00:32:40who is pure instinct
00:32:42and reflex
00:32:42behind the wheel.
00:32:43This could be fun to watch.
00:32:48Montoya
00:32:48just one of those guys
00:32:49that got uncanny car
00:32:50control.
00:32:51Very good on cold tyres.
00:32:53One Indy 500
00:32:55mainly because of his
00:32:56look at that.
00:32:57Tenth of a second
00:32:58quicker than
00:32:59Hyde felt
00:33:00in that first sector.
00:33:01Supposedly some
00:33:02fast times
00:33:03at the end
00:33:04of the closing
00:33:04stages of the
00:33:06sessions
00:33:07on Thursday
00:33:08and Friday
00:33:09on Thursday
00:33:10and Saturday.
00:33:12This is a track
00:33:13that gets better
00:33:14and better
00:33:14faster and faster
00:33:15with each lap
00:33:17because
00:33:17more rubber
00:33:19goes down.
00:33:19You can see
00:33:20the rubber
00:33:21being laid
00:33:21on the racing line
00:33:22but right
00:33:22throughout the weekend
00:33:23even into the race
00:33:24itself
00:33:26you won't really
00:33:27see the tyre
00:33:27performance drop
00:33:29off so much here.
00:33:29If anything
00:33:30you might see
00:33:30the cars go
00:33:31quicker as the race
00:33:32progresses.
00:33:33Because the track
00:33:33definitely gets quicker.
00:33:34Look at that.
00:33:34Absolutely.
00:33:35Big chunk
00:33:35out of Hyde felt's
00:33:37tyre in that
00:33:37second sector.
00:33:39says his damaged
00:33:40shoulder is
00:33:41almost 100%
00:33:42but he's still
00:33:43not happy
00:33:44with the McLaren
00:33:45and I mean
00:33:45everywhere
00:33:46not just here.
00:33:48And
00:33:50yes.
00:33:51Yes.
00:33:51Yes.
00:33:53By nearly
00:33:54three tenths
00:33:55of a second
00:33:55the Colombian
00:33:56goes to
00:33:57provisional pole
00:33:57ahead of Nick
00:33:58Heidfeld
00:33:59dropping David
00:34:00Coulthard
00:34:00to the second row.
00:34:02We'll take a break.
00:34:03Next up
00:34:04will be Mark
00:34:04Webber
00:34:05in the Williams.
00:34:09Back in Monaco
00:34:10for the first
00:34:11of two rounds
00:34:12of qualifying
00:34:12and this may be
00:34:13the final Grand Prix
00:34:14weekend in which
00:34:15we see two rounds
00:34:16of qualifying.
00:34:17I'm Bob Varsha
00:34:18with David Hobbs
00:34:18and Steve Matchett.
00:34:19This is Mark Webber
00:34:20in the BMW Williams
00:34:21heading up the hill
00:34:22to Casino Square.
00:34:23The teams have
00:34:24in principle
00:34:25unanimously agreed
00:34:26to eliminate
00:34:27Sunday morning
00:34:28final qualifying
00:34:29in Formula One
00:34:30and it may begin
00:34:31as early as
00:34:32next week's race
00:34:32at the Nürburgring
00:34:33the European Grand Prix.
00:34:35Look at that front
00:34:36suspension moving
00:34:36left and right.
00:34:37You very rarely
00:34:39see the suspension
00:34:39on a car move
00:34:40but that's again
00:34:41indication of how
00:34:42softly sprung
00:34:43these cars are.
00:34:44Certainly in comparison
00:34:45to the Barcelona
00:34:46track from
00:34:47a couple of weeks ago
00:34:48where it's all
00:34:49about aerodynamics.
00:34:50Mark Webber
00:34:51is having an incredible
00:34:52year this year
00:34:53at qualifying.
00:34:54He's second
00:34:54at average
00:34:56of 3.6
00:34:57on the grid position.
00:34:58Llano truly
00:34:59is top of the table
00:34:59and average of 3.4
00:35:01so Webber
00:35:01has some great
00:35:02qualifying runs this year
00:35:03but his racing
00:35:04has just
00:35:06proven to be
00:35:06a bit lackluster
00:35:07incurring the wrath
00:35:08of the team
00:35:09two weeks ago
00:35:10in Barcelona
00:35:10when he fell
00:35:11from the front row
00:35:12to finish up
00:35:13well down in the field
00:35:14just scoring a point.
00:35:16just shy of 180 miles
00:35:17an hour
00:35:18from Webber
00:35:18through the speed traps
00:35:19and not as fast
00:35:20as Massa
00:35:21who has been
00:35:22the fastest
00:35:22in this qualifying
00:35:23session in the speed trap
00:35:25but the car
00:35:26is working well
00:35:27around here.
00:35:28This could be P1.
00:35:30Yeah.
00:35:31Yeah.
00:35:32That's good.
00:35:3314.5
00:35:33that's not quite
00:35:35as quick as he went
00:35:36this morning
00:35:37in practice.
00:35:37Kimi Räikkönen
00:35:38Iceman
00:35:39looking on there.
00:35:40Webber has yet
00:35:41to finish a race
00:35:42higher than he started it.
00:35:44He has been
00:35:44superb.
00:35:45You mentioned it David
00:35:46in qualifying
00:35:46but he just hasn't
00:35:47been able to get
00:35:48the result.
00:35:48No he just keeps
00:35:49on dropping
00:35:50back through the field.
00:35:51Actually we're talking
00:35:52about the dust
00:35:52in the tunnel
00:35:53as the drivers exit
00:35:54the tunnel
00:35:55keeps seeing
00:35:55that cloud of dust
00:35:56on that shot
00:35:56it was definitely
00:35:57the FIA legality
00:35:59plank that was sparking
00:36:00so perhaps
00:36:01there's a little
00:36:02undulation
00:36:02at the exit
00:36:03of the tunnel
00:36:04and that's why
00:36:04we keep seeing
00:36:05that cloud of smoke
00:36:05it's the
00:36:06it's the plank smoke
00:36:07being thrown
00:36:08from underneath the car.
00:36:09Now here's the man
00:36:10everybody's been watching
00:36:11since he turned a lap
00:36:12at 1 minute 13.97
00:36:14this morning.
00:36:15This is the Renault
00:36:16of Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:36:19Slower.
00:36:21Wow.
00:36:28The Renault winning
00:36:29here last year
00:36:30in the hands of
00:36:30Jano Trulli
00:36:31from pole
00:36:33and very quick
00:36:34this morning
00:36:34Fisichella
00:36:35second quick
00:36:35behind him
00:36:36is Alonso
00:36:36so Renault
00:36:37is looking
00:36:37very very strong
00:36:38here all weekend.
00:36:39but
00:36:40he had the fastest
00:36:41time in the
00:36:42final two sectors
00:36:43this morning
00:36:44in practice.
00:36:45Let's see if he
00:36:45can make it up here.
00:36:55Wow.
00:36:56You talk about
00:36:56threading the needle
00:36:57that camera shot
00:36:58right there.
00:36:59That is the best.
00:37:01Well Weber
00:37:01has made the pit
00:37:02entry I guess
00:37:04TV hosts
00:37:05were afraid
00:37:06he might not.
00:37:06Come on Fisichella
00:37:07push it now
00:37:07push it.
00:37:09he can do this.
00:37:13No.
00:37:14Wow.
00:37:16That's a surprise.
00:37:17I tell you
00:37:17for saying how
00:37:18off the pace
00:37:18he was at the
00:37:19start of that lap
00:37:20he really did
00:37:20come to life
00:37:21in the second
00:37:21and third sector.
00:37:23Nick Heidfeld
00:37:24looks on
00:37:25with Mario
00:37:26and of course Heidfeld
00:37:28and of course Heidfeld
00:37:30currently lying third
00:37:31but of course
00:37:32he's 0.6 of a second
00:37:34slower than his teammate
00:37:35which is the key issue here
00:37:37because next year
00:37:38could be a big change
00:37:40year again at Williams
00:37:41and obviously Heidfeld
00:37:42wants to hang on
00:37:43to that job.
00:37:45sun brightly shining
00:37:47over the track
00:37:47once again
00:37:48here comes
00:37:48Ralph Schumacher
00:37:49now no matter
00:37:50how he does
00:37:51in his aggregate
00:37:52two rounds
00:37:52of qualifying
00:37:53he will have
00:37:54a half second
00:37:55added to it
00:37:56and that will
00:37:56cost him
00:37:57turns out
00:37:58in one of his
00:37:59practice sessions
00:37:59he went out
00:38:00with a mismatched
00:38:01set of Michelin tires
00:38:02Michelin took the blame
00:38:04for it
00:38:05but Schumacher
00:38:06will pay the price
00:38:07and a half a second
00:38:08here of course
00:38:09could be like
00:38:10two or three rows
00:38:11and as you said
00:38:11right at the top
00:38:12of the show
00:38:12the winner
00:38:13has come from
00:38:14the front three rows
00:38:14here
00:38:16a multitude of times
00:38:17if you're back
00:38:18down in row four
00:38:18five or six
00:38:19you're really out of luck
00:38:20to give a little
00:38:21explanation
00:38:22to what Bob's
00:38:23talking about
00:38:24with a tire
00:38:24and the mismatch
00:38:25each tire
00:38:26produced by
00:38:27the tire suppliers
00:38:28has its own
00:38:29unique barcode
00:38:30and each tire
00:38:31released from
00:38:32the tire supplier
00:38:33has to be
00:38:33registered
00:38:34with Charlie Whiting
00:38:36the race director
00:38:37in Texas
00:38:37oh wow wow wow
00:38:39oh boy
00:38:40that's what happens
00:38:42wow
00:38:42when you overstep the balance
00:38:45soon as he hit it
00:38:47on the left side
00:38:48you knew he was
00:38:48just clipped that
00:38:49oh
00:38:51oh
00:38:52well he wouldn't have to
00:38:53that was a big one
00:38:54that's done a lot of damage
00:38:55now there are no small ones
00:38:56here in Monaco
00:38:56no you're right
00:38:57there's no
00:38:58runoff error at all
00:38:59to speak of
00:39:01is he favoring that right
00:39:02yeah he didn't
00:39:04wow
00:39:05that was a heavy hit
00:39:08manager
00:39:09Willy Weber
00:39:09second from the right
00:39:10in the black shirt
00:39:1320%
00:39:13Willy
00:39:14as he's known
00:39:14in the pit lane
00:39:19does he look all right
00:39:20yeah he seems to be okay
00:39:21okay
00:39:23boy that was a heavy hit
00:39:24it was
00:39:24oh
00:39:26it all started
00:39:27it all happened so quickly here
00:39:29yep
00:39:29starts on the approach to that left-hander
00:39:32just too close to the wall
00:39:35oh
00:39:37see why drivers wear those pads
00:39:38on their knee
00:39:41well the cockpit
00:39:42they're so confined
00:39:44that your knees rub again
00:39:45here we see it again
00:39:46oh we're not going to see it
00:39:47from the right shot
00:39:47not from this angle
00:39:49it's the wall on the left side first
00:39:51and that rockets him across the track
00:39:53like a billiard ball
00:39:54to the right side
00:39:54did he just clip the apex of the curb
00:39:56or did something break on the car
00:39:57it seemed to turn
00:39:58twist very
00:40:00unusually
00:40:00I thought he caught the wall
00:40:02with the left front
00:40:03look at the tire
00:40:03is completely off
00:40:04the right-hand rim
00:40:05what rim
00:40:06not much rim left
00:40:07is there
00:40:08rim nets
00:40:09rim nets
00:40:10very good Bob
00:40:11wow
00:40:12now let's look from this angle
00:40:15you can see the bumpy approach
00:40:16to this
00:40:16to back corner
00:40:21I think he does just
00:40:22I think he does just clip the guardrail
00:40:24does he
00:40:24the car is moving
00:40:26an awful lot
00:40:27it's bouncing on the springs
00:40:28remember we're talking about
00:40:29how softly sprung
00:40:30the rear of these cars are
00:40:31you get that slight porpoising effect
00:40:33as the car was coming down
00:40:34towards that
00:40:36armco to the left
00:40:37well they do
00:40:37they do do that a lot
00:40:38coming down
00:40:39I mean all the cars
00:40:40do that coming down
00:40:40to back
00:40:41it's obviously pretty bumpy
00:40:42down there
00:40:42which goes back to what
00:40:44you were saying earlier
00:40:44about the softer springs
00:40:45to try and get some compliance
00:40:46in the car
00:40:47and get some grip
00:40:48but I think he just
00:40:50misjudged it
00:40:51and clipped that inside wall
00:40:52which obviously
00:40:53is very very easy to do
00:40:55here you go
00:40:55watch this thing
00:40:56the chicane
00:40:58far end of the street
00:41:03oh there
00:41:04well absolutely
00:41:05left front
00:41:06made contact
00:41:07with the armcar
00:41:08and just pitched the car
00:41:09into the armcar
00:41:10on the right hand side
00:41:12bits of car
00:41:13flying down the road
00:41:14100 yards
00:41:14in front of him
00:41:15a horrible accident
00:41:16and a very frightening
00:41:17moment
00:41:18however
00:41:21gee
00:41:21listen to that noise
00:41:27oh dear
00:41:27now in slow motion
00:41:28watch the left front
00:41:29approaching the armco
00:41:31on the left
00:41:31there right at the apex
00:41:32oh it just turns in a bit early
00:41:33yep
00:41:37there's the contact
00:41:38yep
00:41:39it's broken the suspension
00:41:40right there
00:41:40the left suspension
00:41:41is already broken
00:41:42so he's got no hope
00:41:43of pulling the car back
00:41:44look at that
00:41:44he's correcting
00:41:45yeah
00:41:45in a microsecond
00:41:46he's got the opposite
00:41:47I tell you what
00:41:48you know
00:41:48he only just clipped
00:41:49that barrier
00:41:50and it sure as heck
00:41:51broke it pretty easy
00:41:52yep
00:41:52yep
00:41:54that's the thing
00:41:55about these carbon fiber
00:41:56suspension pieces
00:41:57they're made to work
00:41:58in one direction
00:41:59that's the way they lay up
00:42:00the fabric of the carbon fiber
00:42:02absolutely
00:42:03they're very strong
00:42:04in the direction
00:42:05they will be loaded
00:42:05and take the suspension load
00:42:07but you put an extraordinary
00:42:08load onto them
00:42:08and they will break
00:42:10very quickly
00:42:11if there's a bright light
00:42:12because of that accident
00:42:13it will be a relief
00:42:14to the team
00:42:15that it was a driver accident
00:42:16not that something
00:42:17broke on the car
00:42:18because then they're in
00:42:19all sorts of problems
00:42:20of what broke
00:42:21what are we going to do
00:42:22about it
00:42:22so at least we can say
00:42:23driver error
00:42:24and thankfully
00:42:25the driver is fine
00:42:26you can be sure
00:42:27that man watched
00:42:28the whole thing unfold
00:42:29very carefully
00:42:30that's Fernando Alonso
00:42:32three men remain
00:42:33to make their first
00:42:34qualifying run
00:42:35last year's pole sitter
00:42:36Jarno Trulli
00:42:37plus Alonso
00:42:38and Räikkönen
00:42:42one corner to go
00:42:43for Jarno Trulli
00:42:44one corner to his first
00:42:46career Formula 1
00:42:49119 starts
00:42:50Trulli has done it
00:42:55that was a year ago
00:42:57at Renault
00:42:58when Jarno Trulli
00:42:59took pole
00:43:00and went on to win
00:43:01the Grand Prix of Monaco
00:43:02and now after a lengthy
00:43:03red flag
00:43:04for Ralph Schumacher's
00:43:05heavy accident
00:43:06down at the harbor side
00:43:07Jarno Trulli
00:43:09his teammate at Toyota
00:43:10will take to the track
00:43:12and he has to be
00:43:13wondering whether or not
00:43:14the cleanup
00:43:14of all that oil
00:43:15down there
00:43:16at the accident scene
00:43:18was complete
00:43:20well with the best
00:43:21will in the world
00:43:22even if they did
00:43:22an incredibly good job
00:43:23it's bound to be
00:43:24just a little bit different
00:43:26let's take another look
00:43:27at Schumacher's crash
00:43:28from the onboard camera
00:43:31through the chicane
00:43:32so far so good
00:43:35about 165 miles an hour
00:43:37here
00:43:37get into the corner
00:43:38and
00:43:41now let's listen to it
00:43:42from outside
00:43:57here's the good angle
00:44:05oh man
00:44:05wow
00:44:06that was the microphone
00:44:07to hear the accident
00:44:08on wasn't it
00:44:10yeah he just clipped
00:44:11that garbell
00:44:11the suspension broke
00:44:13immediately
00:44:13sending him across the road
00:44:15that is the corner
00:44:17so Jarno Trulli
00:44:18will be having a good look
00:44:19at a good feel
00:44:19as he goes through there
00:44:20if only we had that
00:44:21camera angle
00:44:22on Schumacher's car
00:44:27put some heat in the tyres
00:44:28there
00:44:28trying to
00:44:28I think so
00:44:31yeah definitely
00:44:32trying to put some heat
00:44:32in those front tyres
00:44:33there
00:44:36here we go
00:44:37pole last year
00:44:39winner last year
00:44:43Bruce Sandoval
00:44:46you saw Trulli take a tear off
00:44:49from his visor there
00:44:50and thrown away
00:44:50seems an unusual
00:44:52drive to do that
00:44:53to do yeah
00:44:53I wonder whether or not
00:44:54something's on the track
00:44:55or some of that
00:44:59oil or water
00:45:00that was on the track
00:45:01was being thrown up
00:45:01from the front tyres
00:45:07through the Grand Hotel
00:45:09hairpin
00:45:09down to Poitiers
00:45:10the gateway
00:45:15under the hotel
00:45:22two men to follow
00:45:23Mark Webber
00:45:24is the provisional
00:45:24pole sitter
00:45:25for Williams
00:45:26and it would be
00:45:26a huge upset
00:45:27if he can hang on to it
00:45:28Schumacher's accident
00:45:30may help him
00:45:31coming up that corner
00:45:32that's caught his teammates out
00:45:33yeah
00:45:34doesn't go quite as wide
00:45:35as he might have done there
00:45:36because all that oil drives there
00:45:37being careful
00:45:38in nearly a half second slow
00:45:43so this will not get it done
00:45:45for the defending pole sitter
00:45:48don't forget though
00:45:49of course
00:45:49we've got more qualifying tomorrow
00:45:51it's an aggregate
00:45:51but nevertheless
00:45:52he's got a bit of an uphill climb now
00:45:56fifth place
00:45:57six tenths off
00:45:58remember the grid position
00:45:59will be determined
00:46:00on aggregate time
00:46:01over the two sessions
00:46:02there's Webber
00:46:03fingers and toes crossed
00:46:05no doubt
00:46:06so there's a little undulation
00:46:08at the exit of the tunnel
00:46:09throwing that plank smoke up
00:46:17well I think truly
00:46:18you know
00:46:18he really perhaps
00:46:20aired on the side of caution there
00:46:22David what do you do
00:46:23try and put an accident like that
00:46:24from your teammate
00:46:25out of your mind
00:46:26because you know
00:46:26you've got to
00:46:27you've got to put it on the line
00:46:28in that qualifying run
00:46:29but you know there's bits of debris down there
00:46:33and dust and oil dry down there
00:46:35Alonso
00:46:36who is just so cool and calm this year
00:46:39such a smooth driver
00:46:41quickest in that first sector
00:46:43everybody's expecting the Renault to be very quick here
00:46:45Fischkello is a little bit disappointing
00:46:47fast in practice this morning
00:46:48not quite up to it this afternoon
00:46:50he's ahead of the pace right now
00:46:51but he's doing a fantastic job at the moment
00:46:53one driver to come after him
00:46:55and that'll be Kimi Raikkonen
00:46:57who's riding a streak of two straight poles
00:46:59coming in
00:46:59in Italy
00:47:01and in Spain
00:47:02right now
00:47:03here is Alonso
00:47:04now will Alonso
00:47:06push that
00:47:07just that little bit harder
00:47:08where Ralf went off
00:47:10will he risk run him wide
00:47:13that looked good
00:47:14yeah
00:47:15well he's
00:47:15because he knows that one car's already been through
00:47:17yes quicker in that second
00:47:18and he had time to give
00:47:20but he's building on the margin now
00:47:22down towards Raskas
00:47:24to the right
00:47:25short sprint up
00:47:26onto the start finish straight
00:47:28and push
00:47:29oh car understing a little bit on the way in there
00:47:31but
00:47:34yeah
00:47:35and by nothing
00:47:37trivial
00:47:370.459 of a second
00:47:40man
00:47:40that fraction slowly went this morning
00:47:43a 14-1
00:47:44this morning
00:47:45Raikkonen did a 1.14-2.15
00:47:47so Raikkonen to come
00:47:49he becomes the second man
00:47:51after Weber
00:47:51to break 100 miles an hour
00:47:54in average speed
00:47:55around this two mile track
00:47:56and fastest through the speed trap
00:47:58as well
00:47:58for Alonso
00:47:59184.4 miles an hour
00:48:01fastest of the day
00:48:03in the qualifying session
00:48:04from that
00:48:04RS-25
00:48:06oh man
00:48:07look at that
00:48:08that's confidence for you
00:48:10and now here he comes
00:48:12Kimi Raikkonen
00:48:13winner
00:48:14in Spain
00:48:15pole sitter
00:48:16for the San Marino
00:48:17and Spanish Grand Prix
00:48:19this car
00:48:20is capable
00:48:21of taking pole
00:48:22around here
00:48:22I'm sure
00:48:23it works very well
00:48:24across the curbs
00:48:26and Kimi Raikkonen
00:48:28is one of those guys
00:48:29that can dig really deep
00:48:30he used to make a few mistakes
00:48:32he's making less and less
00:48:33and look at that
00:48:34on that first sector
00:48:36very quick
00:48:38through Casino Square
00:48:39and through Massenet
00:48:40wearing a special helmet
00:48:42this weekend
00:48:42that'll be auctioned off
00:48:43for charity
00:48:44with his name
00:48:45like Juan Pablo Montoya's
00:48:47this weekend
00:48:48outlined in diamonds
00:48:49on the helmet
00:48:50Montoya has his name
00:48:52Raikkonen has
00:48:53Iceman
00:48:56no cloud of plank smoke
00:48:58being thrown up
00:48:58from the McLaren
00:49:01down to the dreaded
00:49:03to back
00:49:04182.6
00:49:05fractionally slower
00:49:06than Alonso's
00:49:07pace through the speed trap
00:49:08but there
00:49:08look how well the car
00:49:10works across the curbs
00:49:11here again
00:49:12and here
00:49:12and he picks up
00:49:13more time
00:49:15Kimi can do this
00:49:16oh my
00:49:16Kimi can do this
00:49:18this is going to be huge
00:49:19it is
00:49:20considering how much
00:49:21Alonso picked up
00:49:23over Weber
00:49:23watch this
00:49:24from Raikkonen
00:49:25in the McLaren
00:49:26Mercedes
00:49:28wow
00:49:28another four
00:49:29almost five tenths
00:49:32a 1.13.6
00:49:33the quickest lap
00:49:34of the weekend
00:49:35so far
00:49:35by far
00:49:36and of course
00:49:37eclipsing
00:49:38Michael Schumacher's
00:49:39pole time
00:49:40well Jana Trude's
00:49:41pole record
00:49:41of 13.9
00:49:42so tremendous
00:49:44turn of speed
00:49:45from Kimi Raikkonen
00:49:46in the McLaren
00:49:46there is quite an
00:49:47undulation of that exit
00:49:48we saw it there
00:49:49how the car rode over it
00:49:50but they have got
00:49:51the car high enough
00:49:52underneath it
00:49:52they are not grounding out
00:49:54which probably saved them
00:49:55just a little bit
00:49:56of a fraction of a second
00:49:57and it also made the car
00:49:58a lot more stable
00:49:59this car is working
00:50:00very very well
00:50:01around here
00:50:02over the curbs
00:50:03look at it
00:50:03how it reacts
00:50:051.13.644
00:50:07a new lap record
00:50:09here
00:50:09in Monaco
00:50:12comes off that curb
00:50:13and loads up
00:50:13the left rear tyre
00:50:15there is a lot of deflection
00:50:16on the sidewall
00:50:17but
00:50:17it worked
00:50:18very very well
00:50:19immediate grip
00:50:20from the Michelin
00:50:21boy though
00:50:22you saw
00:50:22his little old hands
00:50:23move there
00:50:24as you went over
00:50:24those two
00:50:26chicanes
00:50:27coming out of the
00:50:27screen pool section
00:50:28there you see the results
00:50:29now look at that
00:50:29Hakimi Raikkonen
00:50:301.13.6
00:50:31nearly half a second
00:50:33quicker than Alonso
00:50:34but that is
00:50:35nearly a full second
00:50:36quicker than Weber
00:50:36just half the story
00:50:38we have another set
00:50:39of single car
00:50:40single lap efforts
00:50:41to come
00:50:41tomorrow morning
00:50:42we'll have it for you
00:50:43here on Speed Channel
00:50:44before we begin
00:50:45live coverage
00:50:46of the Grand Prix
00:50:47itself
00:50:48Raikkonen's time
00:50:49of the 13.6
00:50:50is under
00:50:50last year's pole time
00:50:52but remember
00:50:52last year's pole time
00:50:53was set with fuel
00:50:54but nevertheless
00:50:54they've already
00:50:55reached with these
00:50:56hard compound fires
00:50:57Schumacher
00:50:57seven time world champion
00:50:59two and a half
00:51:00seconds slower
00:51:02and Ralph Schumacher's
00:51:04half second penalty
00:51:05now seems
00:51:06pretty trivial
00:51:07yeah
00:51:07he'll go back
00:51:08ten spots
00:51:09no doubt
00:51:09he'll have to
00:51:10change the engine
00:51:12may have to
00:51:13change the race car
00:51:14like most of the
00:51:15top teams
00:51:15Toyota brought
00:51:16four chassis here
00:51:17and Schumacher
00:51:18will need his backup
00:51:21starting from the
00:51:22back at Monaco
00:51:23pretty much
00:51:23well it's probably
00:51:24a pessimistic view
00:51:25that the teams take
00:51:26but they do expect
00:51:27if anywhere
00:51:28they're going to
00:51:28lose a car
00:51:29they will lose it
00:51:29here
00:51:30at Monaco
00:51:31there's just no
00:51:32runoff area
00:51:33a little bit of
00:51:33runoff area
00:51:34at Sandovatan
00:51:36Philando Alonso
00:51:37there shrugging
00:51:38his shoulders
00:51:38and saying
00:51:39just no way
00:51:40that was a
00:51:42terrific time
00:51:43from Kimi Raikkonen
00:51:44Raikkonen's car
00:51:45goes on the scales
00:51:46Alonso
00:51:47he's got to be
00:51:48wondering
00:51:48where did that
00:51:49come from
00:51:50I was going to say
00:51:50it's a great time
00:51:51Alonso
00:51:51he must be
00:51:52thinking exactly
00:51:53that
00:51:54.48 seconds
00:51:55are you kidding
00:51:59driver Wade
00:52:00with the car
00:52:01so there you see
00:52:02they're starting to
00:52:03check the rear wing
00:52:04for legality
00:52:06the height
00:52:07the dimensions
00:52:07of the wing
00:52:08are all set
00:52:08of course
00:52:09and also
00:52:09the flexibility
00:52:11of the wing
00:52:12is checked
00:52:13there was some
00:52:16speculation
00:52:16that at the start
00:52:17of the season
00:52:18one team
00:52:19that was doing
00:52:19terribly well
00:52:20in the first few races
00:52:21had designed a wing
00:52:22that was just
00:52:22flexing enough
00:52:25down the straights
00:52:26that it was taking
00:52:26a little bit of
00:52:27downforce off the car
00:52:28off comes the
00:52:29Hans device
00:52:30off comes the
00:52:30helmet
00:52:31keep me right
00:52:32to the crowd
00:52:32absolutely ecstatic
00:52:33as always
00:52:34in other words
00:52:34just
00:52:35well living up
00:52:36to his nickname
00:52:36I wonder if he's
00:52:37aware that Carl Edwards
00:52:38does backflips
00:52:39when he wins races
00:52:40I wonder if we
00:52:40expect that
00:52:41from the Iceman
00:52:41somehow I doubt it
00:52:45that new paint job
00:52:47blends nicely
00:52:48with the race car
00:52:49and he'll be back
00:52:50to the usual model
00:52:51next week
00:52:53at the Nurburgring
00:52:54and this one
00:52:54will become
00:52:55a treasured souvenir
00:52:56for some collector
00:52:57we'll be back
00:52:58to hear from the
00:52:58top three
00:52:59in qualifying
00:52:59for Monaco
00:53:00in a moment
00:53:14clouds rolling
00:53:15into the principality
00:53:16of Monaco
00:53:17over the Mara teams
00:53:18but the top
00:53:19three qualifiers
00:53:20are now in the
00:53:20interview room
00:53:21with Speed Channel's
00:53:22Peter Windsor
00:53:23after the first
00:53:24qualifying session
00:53:24for the Monaco
00:53:25Grand Prix
00:53:26congratulations
00:53:26to the fastest
00:53:27three drivers
00:53:28third quickest
00:53:29for BMW Williams
00:53:30Mark Webber
00:53:32second quickest
00:53:32for mild 7 Renault
00:53:34Fernando Alonso
00:53:35and fastest
00:53:36for West McLaren
00:53:37Mercedes
00:53:38Kimi Räikkönen
00:53:38Kimi
00:53:39obviously that
00:53:40big accident
00:53:41for Ralf Schumacher
00:53:42towards the end
00:53:42of qualifying there
00:53:43first of all
00:53:44were the track
00:53:44conditions changed
00:53:45at all
00:53:46by the oil
00:53:46that went down
00:53:47by the fluids
00:53:48on the circuit
00:53:48yeah I would say
00:53:49that it didn't help
00:53:50because
00:53:52it was
00:53:52at least
00:53:53it was quite
00:53:54on outside
00:53:55of the circuit
00:53:55so it wasn't
00:53:56too bad
00:53:56but I didn't
00:53:57want to run there
00:53:58so
00:53:58needed to take
00:53:59a little bit
00:53:59more careful
00:54:00that corner
00:54:01but
00:54:01it didn't really
00:54:02make much difference
00:54:04well it didn't
00:54:04make much difference
00:54:05you're quickest
00:54:05in all three sectors
00:54:06it looked from the
00:54:07outside as if
00:54:08that's as good
00:54:09as it gets
00:54:09almost a perfect lap
00:54:11yeah I would say
00:54:12that apart from
00:54:13that one corner
00:54:13it was pretty good
00:54:14the car felt it
00:54:15good
00:54:15better than
00:54:16in the morning
00:54:17so
00:54:17I was very happy
00:54:18I felt it
00:54:19straight away
00:54:19when I went out
00:54:20that the tires
00:54:21and everything
00:54:22was working
00:54:22very well
00:54:23so I was quite
00:54:23confident
00:54:24but
00:54:24of course I didn't
00:54:25know what the
00:54:26time starters
00:54:26in front of me
00:54:27did so
00:54:29it's the best place
00:54:30for tomorrow
00:54:31and at least
00:54:31we have a little gap
00:54:32to the second guy
00:54:33so maybe we can
00:54:34have quite a good
00:54:35good
00:54:38race tomorrow
00:54:39yeah if you had
00:54:40a chance to study
00:54:41yet the data
00:54:41but you're quickest
00:54:42in all three sectors
00:54:43but Fernando was quickest
00:54:45through all the speed traps
00:54:46what do you make of that
00:54:47it doesn't make
00:54:48difference in here
00:54:48you're not gonna
00:54:49get past anyone
00:54:50if the guy
00:54:51in front of you
00:54:52don't want to let you
00:54:52so
00:54:54that's all right
00:54:56congratulations
00:54:57Fernando
00:54:58a very good lap
00:54:59a difficult situation
00:54:59for you of course
00:55:00going out
00:55:00when you did
00:55:01just after Jano
00:55:02with that Ralph accident
00:55:03what was it like
00:55:04from your point of view
00:55:04yeah same as Kimi
00:55:06I think
00:55:07didn't help at all
00:55:08especially
00:55:09in my case
00:55:11I didn't know
00:55:12which line
00:55:13Jano took
00:55:14in the lap
00:55:14because I was doing
00:55:15my out lap
00:55:16already
00:55:17and you know
00:55:18when I arrived there
00:55:19in the time lap
00:55:20my only information
00:55:21was that
00:55:22Jano was
00:55:23not too slow
00:55:24was quite quick
00:55:25in the second sector
00:55:26the engineers told me
00:55:26in the out lap
00:55:27so you know
00:55:28it was a good confidence
00:55:29but as Kimi said
00:55:30we didn't take
00:55:31the normal racing line
00:55:33and we were a little bit
00:55:34risking
00:55:35in the next chicken
00:55:37in the swimming pool chicken
00:55:38in the high speed corner
00:55:39but anyway
00:55:40second place
00:55:41is good for today
00:55:43it's good for
00:55:44Star
00:55:44before last
00:55:46tomorrow
00:55:46in Quali
00:55:47and hopefully
00:55:49it's a good strategy
00:55:51also for the race
00:55:52because
00:55:52it's a good gap
00:55:54from Mark
00:55:55and
00:55:56quite also
00:55:58maybe too much
00:55:58gap to Kimi
00:55:59and we have to
00:56:00think what we do
00:56:02you obviously have
00:56:03momentum with you
00:56:04you've been very quick
00:56:05throughout the weekend
00:56:06so far
00:56:06what does Monaco mean
00:56:08for you
00:56:09coming to this race
00:56:10this great race
00:56:11at this point of the season
00:56:11with the momentum you have
00:56:12yeah it's fantastic
00:56:14yeah it's fantastic
00:56:14also you know
00:56:15I like Monaco
00:56:16and I have been
00:56:18very quick
00:56:19always here
00:56:20with the Renault car
00:56:22once because
00:56:23I like the track
00:56:24and then also
00:56:25the car has been
00:56:26always very competitive
00:56:27here
00:56:28and this year
00:56:29even more
00:56:29the R25
00:56:30seems competitive
00:56:31everywhere
00:56:31the Michelin tires
00:56:33I think we
00:56:34have to say
00:56:35thanks again
00:56:35for the tires
00:56:37we have here
00:56:37and you know
00:56:38I'm able to fight
00:56:39for the pole
00:56:40and for the victory
00:56:41hopefully tomorrow again
00:56:42so it's the best
00:56:44the best moment
00:56:45in my career
00:56:46for sure
00:56:46these days
00:56:48thank you Fernando
00:56:49Mark
00:56:50didn't appear to be
00:56:51on the radar screen
00:56:52on Thursday in practice
00:56:54but once again
00:56:54right up there
00:56:55when it comes to qualifying
00:56:57congratulations
00:56:57a great looking lap
00:56:58first of all
00:56:59yeah thanks
00:56:59I was pretty happy with it
00:57:01it's
00:57:02to start
00:57:02the start of the session
00:57:03the guys looked like
00:57:04they were struggling
00:57:04for a bit of grip
00:57:05so I thought that
00:57:05it might have been
00:57:07difficult to repeat
00:57:08our P4 times
00:57:09but in the end
00:57:10the track
00:57:11was pretty good
00:57:14and I think
00:57:15it's just a
00:57:16pat on the back
00:57:16for all the guys
00:57:17especially at Grove
00:57:18they've done a huge job
00:57:19to get everything
00:57:20to this race
00:57:20and especially
00:57:21the last few races
00:57:21trying to catch
00:57:22these two cars here
00:57:24they've set a very high level
00:57:25and we're pushing
00:57:26very hard
00:57:26at Williams
00:57:26to try and get it back
00:57:27so we're all pushing
00:57:28very hard
00:57:29and so thanks to them
00:57:30obviously we're only
00:57:31halfway through the lap
00:57:32we've got tomorrow to go
00:57:34and see how we go
00:57:36don't want to talk
00:57:37about patterns
00:57:37but there is a little bit
00:57:38of a one here
00:57:39you're qualifying
00:57:39very well
00:57:40and so far
00:57:40we need to get
00:57:41the racing
00:57:42backing that up
00:57:43your thoughts
00:57:44as we go towards
00:57:45the race now
00:57:45well I really
00:57:47really enjoy the races
00:57:48you know
00:57:48qualifying is
00:57:50hasn't proved
00:57:51to be a huge
00:57:52huge drama for us
00:57:52we can qualify
00:57:53reasonably well
00:57:55but that's where
00:57:56it comes down
00:57:56to all the data
00:57:58all the long runs
00:57:59working hard
00:58:00with Michelin
00:58:01Michelin
00:58:02have won every
00:58:02Grand Prix
00:58:02this year
00:58:03so they're clearly
00:58:04doing a fantastic job
00:58:06and we might be using
00:58:07the tyres
00:58:08a franco harder
00:58:08but that's
00:58:10what we've got to
00:58:11try and sort out
00:58:12and you always want
00:58:13to try and push down
00:58:15every electronics
00:58:15with the engine
00:58:17all sorts of stuff
00:58:17we need to still improve
00:58:19well well done again
00:58:20now if we could have
00:58:21some more
00:58:22have you heard
00:58:22Mark Webber
00:58:23refers to Grove
00:58:23that's the town
00:58:24in England
00:58:25where the BMW
00:58:25Williams team
00:58:26is based
00:58:27now let's enjoy
00:58:28some on-board
00:58:29perspective
00:58:29of Kimi Räikkönen's
00:58:31potential
00:58:32pole lap
00:58:33he was very quick
00:58:34around Sanderbott
00:58:35and up here
00:58:36as he goes to
00:58:37Massena
00:58:37he made a really
00:58:38tight line
00:58:39he was very close
00:58:40to the guardrail
00:58:40on the inside
00:58:41now he's looking
00:58:41going through
00:58:42Casino Square
00:58:42down the hill
00:58:43to Mirabeau
00:58:45he was quickest
00:58:46in that first sector
00:58:47there
00:58:50this is an awful
00:58:50calling
00:58:51look at how tight it is
00:58:53the McLaren
00:58:54looking awfully smooth
00:58:55there
00:58:55well on the kerb
00:58:56there
00:58:56and the car
00:58:56not upset at all
00:58:58it's working
00:58:59very well
00:59:00around that part
00:59:00of the car
00:59:00into the tunnel
00:59:02and you'll see
00:59:03here
00:59:04when we go
00:59:04at that shot
00:59:05how well it rides
00:59:06that little undulation
00:59:07on the track
00:59:08down into the
00:59:09Rouvelle chicane
00:59:11again
00:59:12it clipped the kerb
00:59:12both sides
00:59:13apexism
00:59:14was very good
00:59:14this is the corner
00:59:15they used a bit
00:59:15as he said
00:59:16a little bit
00:59:17careful
00:59:17but it
00:59:18obviously
00:59:19relative
00:59:19there's all that oil
00:59:20dry down there
00:59:21to the right
00:59:21hand side
00:59:22of the track
00:59:22and again
00:59:23over these kerbs
00:59:24the car
00:59:24looking very good
00:59:26down to the last
00:59:27really tight hairpin
00:59:28obviously something
00:59:29happened there
00:59:29earlier on
00:59:30all that oil dry
00:59:31and threads
00:59:32and needle
00:59:32through this
00:59:33Anthony Nogue
00:59:33he's gone
00:59:34look at that
00:59:34right up to the
00:59:35guardrail
00:59:35on the left
00:59:38and across the line
00:59:39and across the line
00:59:39to provisional pole
00:59:40which means he will
00:59:41be the last man
00:59:42on track
00:59:43when we do it all
00:59:44again with race fuel
00:59:45in the cars
00:59:47and among our top
00:59:48three qualifiers
00:59:48to this point
00:59:49well everybody is
00:59:50looking for better
00:59:51results in Monaco
00:59:52between them
00:59:53they have ten
00:59:53career starts
00:59:54but only three
00:59:56race finishes
00:59:58Kimi Raikkonen
00:59:59second in this race

01:00:39some of the highlights
01:00:40of last year's race
01:00:41around the principality
01:00:42Michael Schumacher
01:00:43gunning for his
01:00:44sixth straight victory
01:00:45to start the season
01:00:46but he would start back
01:00:47in eighth on the grid
01:00:48and was dropped
01:00:49to ninth at the start
01:00:50by a blinding start
01:00:51from the BAR Honda
01:00:52of Takuma Sato
01:00:53look at him go by
01:00:54on the right
01:00:55but Sato was a judge
01:00:56to have jumped the start
01:00:57and before they could
01:00:58penalise him
01:00:58this is what happened
01:00:59he blew up
01:01:00going through to back
01:01:00at the front
01:01:01on the front straight there
01:01:02and look at that
01:01:02pool of smoke
01:01:03and look at this
01:01:04fishing Keller
01:01:05runs in the back
01:01:06of David Coulthard
01:01:06and flips
01:01:09cool awful
01:01:10and then Fernando Alonso
01:01:11trying to get past
01:01:12Ralph Schumacher
01:01:13they have a coming together
01:01:15oh
01:01:17big damage there
01:01:19to the Renault
01:01:20Fernando Alonso
01:01:21yeah he's not too pleased
01:01:22by that
01:01:23Michael Schumacher
01:01:24stayed out behind
01:01:25the pace car
01:01:25Jarno Trulli
01:01:26and Jenson Button
01:01:27pitted
01:01:27while the safety car
01:01:28was still out
01:01:29when Pablo Montoya
01:01:30was a lap down
01:01:31tried to go by
01:01:32the race leader
01:01:32Schumacher mysteriously
01:01:34moved him into the wall
01:01:36end of race
01:01:37end of Michael Schumacher's
01:01:39dream
01:01:39of a perfect
01:01:40undefeated
01:01:41Formula 1 season
01:01:42that left the battle
01:01:44in the late stages
01:01:45to Jarno Trulli
01:01:46in the Renault
01:01:46and Jenson Button
01:01:47in the BAR Honda
01:01:48both men looking
01:01:49for their first
01:01:50career victories
01:01:51in the biggest race
01:01:52of the season
01:01:52and it was Trulli
