Sea cucumbers are strange ocean creatures that have a truly unique way of staying alive. Instead of using a mouth or gills like most aquatic animals, they draw water in through their anus to breathe. Inside their rear end sits a complex system called respiratory trees. These branching tubes extract oxygen directly from the water pumped into their body cavity.
This unusual breathing method creates a very unusual housing situation in the ocean. Tiny fish, known as pearlfish, actively look for sea cucumbers on the seafloor. When the sea cucumber opens its rear opening to inhale fresh water, the pearlfish slips inside headfirst or tailfirst to hide from predators.
Living inside another animal's breathing organ sounds uncomfortable, but it offers the pearlfish absolute safety. Some species of pearlfish even feed on the sea cucumber's internal organs. Remarkably, the sea cucumber can regenerate its lost organs, allowing both animals to survive this bizarre biological relationship.
