For over two hundred years, scientists doubted a famous story by explorer Alexander von Humboldt. In eighteen hundred, Humboldt reported seeing electric eels leap out of the water to shock horses. Many researchers assumed this dramatic story was an exaggeration or a myth.

In twenty sixteen, biologist Kenneth Catania proved Humboldt was completely right. He discovered that when electric eels feel threatened by a land predator, they do not just swim away. Instead, they press their chins against the intruder and leap upward out of the river.

By bending their bodies, the eels push high voltage current directly into the target. This shocking defensive move bends electricity above the water line, sending maximum power straight through the attacker's body.
