00:55:05Between Tom and I, I don't think there's a better competition anywhere else in athletics.
00:55:13The American record between us has gone, I think, three or four times, and now the world record has changed
00:55:19hands.
00:55:20He had it, and I had it, and then he had it, and now I have it back.
00:55:23And I don't doubt that he'll lower it again.
00:55:26California teenager Janet Evans ended her events with a third gold medal in three tries, this time in the 800
00:55:32-meter freestyle.
00:55:32That was a new Olympic record.
00:55:34But East Germany's Kristen Otto has done even better.
00:55:36Five gold medals in five tries, the fifth as the backstroke leg in the 400-meter medley.
00:55:41On the track, Carl Lewis had to settle for the silver, but catch this, the fastest 100-meter race in
00:55:46history, won by Canada's Ben Johnson in world record time, Lewis second in breaking the old Olympic mark, a British
00:55:52runner third, another American fourth, but all of them in under 10 seconds, and that's never been done before.
00:55:57Jackie Joyner-Kersey won the women's heptathlon, surprising no one, and leaving no doubt as to who is the greatest
00:56:03woman athlete in the world.
00:56:04Our basketball team made it clear that Egypt is not a basketball powerhouse in a 102-35 blowout.
00:56:10You're listening to NBC Radio Network News.
00:56:13At META, we're not interested in developing cameras.
00:56:15So while other copier companies are busy creating cameras that take lovely snapshots, we're busy creating copiers that make sharp,
00:56:22clear copies.
00:56:23The fact is, in a recent survey by What to Buy for Business, META ranked higher in copy quality than
00:56:29Rico Minolta or Canon.
00:56:31So call 1-800-ABC-MITA and see how good copies can look when they're from a copier company with
00:56:38a single focus.
00:56:39META, all we make are great copiers.
00:56:43Here's a tip for travelers.
00:56:45Now you can earn money every time you fly, rent a car, or dine in a restaurant.
00:56:53Just use the Discover card, the card that actually pays you cash for every charge, up to 1% back
00:57:00every year based on your annual purchases.
00:57:02So the next time you...
00:57:05Or...
00:57:05Don't forget this sound advice.
00:57:09It pays to Discover, the card that pays you back.
00:57:14Japan's Emperor Hirohito has always looked small and frail, even when he was in much better health.
00:57:19But even now, the 87-year-old monarch is fighting for life like a much younger man.
00:57:23Correspondent Jack Russell reports from Tokyo.
00:57:25Doctors say Emperor Hirohito has shown some signs of improvement, but his condition remains serious.
00:57:32They say both his temperature and pulse rate have dropped slightly.
00:57:35But in what appears to be a crisis, the Emperor was given three blood transfusions and treatment to stop some
00:57:42bleeding.
00:57:42Doctors say the Emperor, when asked how he felt, replied in a firm voice, I'm all right.
00:57:48But the Japanese wait in a solemn mood for reports from the palace.

00:57:55The Caribbean would be grateful if it never saw another hurricane.
00:57:58Now all those resort islands may be close to riding off the latest monster, Helene,
00:58:02which has headed almost northward in the Atlantic while losing strength.
00:58:05She's now back to Category 3 and, at the moment, a danger only to shipping.
