The Morning Shift’s Mike Johnson and Beau Morgan react to the Atlanta Falcons' offensive struggles and debate who is most to blame following a brutal performance. The guys break down why Bijan Robinson only getting nine touches is a fundamental game plan failure, how Kyler Gordon recorded three sacks for Chicago after being elevated off the roster, and whether quarterback Michael Penix Jr., Jawaan Taylor, or Ryan Neuzil failed to properly diagnose Dennis Allen's blitz looks.

00:00Just kind of, look, just kind of wading through our feelings here.
00:02We're just trying to figure out what direction to go with this.
00:05You guys that listen to us every morning, big Falcons fans,
00:08and we try to be on the positive end, but it's been tough today.
00:12I'm just going to throw that out there, man.
00:13I was, here's the thing, I don't have all the answers offensively
00:17for what you need to do.
00:18That's not my job.
00:19Here's what I can say, and I say it with my chest.
00:22No game plan that the Falcons have at any time over the next few years
00:27should ever involve John Robinson getting the ball nine times.
00:30It just can't happen, man.
00:32You can talk about the two screens they attempted.
00:35You talked about him not being able to block well yesterday.
00:37You know, I did notice early in the game, I believe this was first quarter.
00:41Might have been early second.
00:44They actually took him off the field on third down.
00:47I don't, I don't know that I've seen that much, man.
00:51And I know that there's been times that you've had, you know,
00:54last year Charlie Warner lined up in the backfield.
00:56This time it was Brian Robinson that's in blitz pickup.
00:59You don't usually see Bajon step off the field on a big third down.
01:02And I'm pretty sure the one I'm talking about was in the red zone.
01:05I have to go back and look at it.
01:06It was.
01:07I actually think you scored on it and Charlie Warner was in,
01:11you just scored on it or got a first down.
01:13He was in the, he was in there instead.
01:16I think, I know Brian was at, Brian was at running back.
01:19Brian Robinson was at running back.
01:21Well, I know that at one point in the red area,
01:23Charlie Warner was in there too.
01:24It's just the blocking back.
01:26Yeah.
01:26I have to go back and look at it.
01:27I don't want to get off on a tangent, but we're not,
01:32and I've noticed this, we're not the only team in,
01:34because Chicago did a lot of yesterday that has decided,
01:37that has become completely predictable with their tight ends.
01:40as far as who's on the field and what you're doing when they're on the field
01:44in certain places.
01:46Because Chicago used Cole Comet multiple times yesterday as a fullback.
01:49They used Colston Loveland as well as a fullback.
01:51Like all these teams have basically done away with the fullback position
01:55and they just carry an extra tight end or two.
01:58Let's go with the H-back.
01:59Yeah.
01:59It gives you flexibility.
02:01The fullback is going by way of the white Buffalo a little bit.
02:05Although a little bit of rebound, a little bit of coming back there.
02:08All right, let's go try to get some callers
02:10and Xavier from Gwinnett.
02:12Xavier, appreciate you hanging on, man.
02:14What's going on, Scott?
02:15Hey, what's going on, fellas?
02:17You know, of course, the frustration has set it in.
02:21But this right here to me was the example of complimentary football
02:24or how to lose.
02:26I think no specific group takes all the blame.
02:29I feel like they all take equal blame.
02:31Even when it comes to the defense.
02:33It's like, look, this is one of the reasons why I've always been against
02:36trying to build your team through, you know, skill players.
02:38Because as a defense, your job is to make sure the other team gets off the field
02:44as well until your offense figures it out.
02:48Yeah.
02:4814 points is too much to give up at the beginning of the game.
02:5221 points is still too much to give up as a whole.
02:55I don't care what the offense got going on.
02:57You get them on the field, you get their offense off the field as well.
03:01Get your offense some more opportunity.
03:03Michael, I need you to figure something else out about scrambling and making plays.
03:08Like, you look like a hurt deer out there.
03:11Make some plays.
03:12Just send a play.
03:13Make a play.
03:14Our offensive line is not looking as good as everybody trying to say they were.
03:18We look bad at the home.
03:20And I just hope we get better.
03:21Yeah, appreciate the phone call.
03:22I don't necessarily disagree wholeheartedly with anything he just said.
03:26The problem I had yesterday was that you never accounted for them bringing the pressure
03:31that you know he's going to bring and that he, like, at what point do you not?
03:37Kyler Gordon was back elevated to the active roster, whether it was from injury or whatever,
03:46literally, like, Saturday, and he had three sacks and four tackles and multiple quarterback
03:52hits and two forced fumbles.
03:54Yeah.
03:55Speaking of that, Kevin Spansky talked about that game from Kyler Gordon yesterday.
03:59Yeah, he's an excellent blitzer.
04:00We knew that going into this game.
04:02Dennis Allen does a very good job with his blitz looks.
04:06We have to look at everything and say, you know, are we giving our guys the best plan
04:09to block those type of guys and have answers and those things.
04:12So you've got to tip your cap to them, and then we'll look at what we can do better.
04:16Kevin, what do you think appeared to lead to some of their success in the screen game?
04:19It seems like they had a lot of guys in space when they were getting to the left and right
04:22side of the lines.
04:23Yeah, it's a difficult scheme to defend.
04:28They challenge you in a bunch of different ways, the way they run it and the way they
04:32throw it, and the screens are a huge part of what they do, and they do them from all
04:35personnel groupings on all down distances.
04:37So, obviously, that's something that we worked on this week, and a lot of it is
04:42simply running to the football.
04:44And, again, if they made plays, we've got to just look at ways that we can defend them
04:49better, but it's definitely a big part of what they do.
04:51The answer to that is when you have a penetrating style of defense and they're up the field
04:55and you want to test the quarterback's legs, you're going to rush the passer.
04:59And when you do that, it's going to create space behind you.
05:01And that's, look, and I agreed with Xavier's phone call.
05:05The one thing I'll say, and you know, I don't want to sound like the offensive line guy
05:09in the room.
05:10There's five offensive linemen.
05:12I mean, right now in front of me in the All-22, I'm looking at eight guys walked up the
05:15line of scrimmage.
05:16You know what I mean?
05:17Like, at some point, there has to be an accountability for the other three.
05:22And I don't know what the scheme was with Juwan Taylor on the right side of a collar.
05:26I don't know.
05:27I'm not going to sit your neck like I do.
05:29But either Penix or Bajon or somebody has got to pick up an extra guy and account for
05:34the extra player walked up the line of scrimmage and diagnosed things.
05:37I just watched a play with exactly that, eight guys.
05:39And you know what happens is they drop one, they bring seven, and then I believe it was
05:44Hardy.
05:45No, excuse me.
05:45Austin Booker basically does a stunt, and he comes untouched because Ryan Neusel couldn't
05:53get his head around.
05:55And Ryan Neusel was trying to help because of the way they had it set up, right?
06:00Yep.
06:00And I think they had DeMarco Jackson up on the line, and that's where Neusel initially
06:05went.
06:06Yeah.
06:06It's frustrating to watch.
06:08Let's go back to the phone lines real quick.
06:10Let's talk to James.
06:11He's in Decatur.
06:12James, what's going on, buddy?
06:14Hey, man.
06:14What I'm trying to figure out is yesterday, the guy that got the three sacks for Chicago.
06:19I mean, isn't that the offensive coordinator's job is to check that down when that's happening
06:26to keep the quarterbacks from getting hit like that?
06:31And how come they didn't use those short plays, man?
06:35Because, I mean, they would have worked.
06:37I mean, you know, some is better than nothing.
06:40All right, man.
06:41And look at Cleveland.
06:43Cleveland, they got rid of all the coaches game to us in Cleveland and start doing what
06:48they need to do.
06:49All right, man.
06:50Yeah, appreciate the phone call.
06:52I genuinely don't even know what plays he's talking about with the short plays.
06:56I tend to agree with him, though.
06:57Like, we didn't have any short throws.
06:59There wasn't any short throws.
07:00Well, yeah.
07:01It was early, and they were brutal.
07:03And then there weren't any.
07:04Yeah, I think it's the OC's job to help come up with some things to adjust to.
07:11I also think it's a recognition job, right?
07:14Like, there's a job of the quarterback, the offensive line, the receivers to use.
07:20They have option routes built in.
07:22If there's a zero blitz, all out pressure, something like that.
07:26You know, so again, I think it's a complete failure offensively.
07:32I don't necessarily think you can say, well, that's definitely that guy's fault.
07:35Definitely the line's fault.
07:37It's definitely the quarterback's fault.
07:39It's all their faults.
07:40Here's the bottom line.
07:41They were walking up eight guys in line of scrimmage.
07:43It's what Dennis Allen does.
07:44And you didn't know which ones were dropping and which ones were coming and which ones were
07:49in coverage and which ones were blitzing.
07:51And you never did diagnose it.
07:52And you didn't have an answer for it.
07:54And that really can encapsulate the entire offensive game plan yesterday.
08:00You didn't have an answer for what they were trying to do.
08:02You didn't dictate the game on your terms.
08:04When you can't run the ball and there's blood in the water, that's what's going to happen
08:09against a Dennis Allen defense.
08:10It's just point blank.
08:11That's the way it's going to go.
