Willard and Dibs discuss how the season is setting up perfectly for the 49ers through about a month and a half.
Transcript
00:00One thing, I appreciate many things about the 49ers staff and the way that they're coached,
00:05but I don't know if you've noticed the healthy respect for the opponent that I feel like,
00:12and I think most coaches have that.
00:14The Rams thing is funny because I don't know if that's actually what they're saying inside the building,
00:19but the analysis about the NFC West this year, to me, has felt off all along.
00:25Quite frankly, one of the most disrespectful ideas that I have ever heard in the analysis of professional sports
00:35was the mere idea that the Rams were kind of like kicking Australia.
00:41Who needs it?
00:43We're so good that let's see if we can just come out not tired.
00:48Even if we're 0-1 and 0-1 in the division against a really good rival team, that's okay.
00:55Because we're the Rams.
00:56My man, if they were thinking that way, they should be fired.
01:00I don't think they were thinking that way.
01:02But what has happened since then is an obvious neon sign about how you do not take anything for granted
01:12in the National Football League.
01:14And yes, that includes being north of a touchdown favorite for the 49ers tonight.
01:19Especially when you look at Washington and what they are facing.
01:23So you've got Philadelphia's quarterback is gone for the year.
01:26And, you know, thoughts and prayers, obviously, for Jalen Hurts and blood clots,
01:30which are no joke, football or non-football.
01:34That's a serious thing.
01:35And then you look at the New York Giants, where they've gone from QB1 to QB2 to QB3,
01:41who actually look good.
01:43And so QB3, who you traded for, is now going to be QB1.
01:46And they, by the way, are still leading the division.
01:49And Dallas is, I don't know if you've ever seen an actual dumpster fire.
01:55Back when I was doing traffic in the helicopter, I actually, I covered, we flew over a dumpster here in
02:01the South Bay that was on fire.
02:02And that's nasty.
02:04You've got hot garbage.
02:06It's a dumpster fire.
02:07It's a dumpster fire.
02:08So Dallas, dumpster fire, Philly, Tanner McKee.
02:12I mean, the Philly's done.
02:13No, but if you're Washington, is my point, you're looking at this.
02:17And I know that, you know, Bill has now been placed on IR, so he will not play tonight.
02:22Ja'Cory Kroskin, yeah, Ja'Cory Kroskin there.
02:25But if you're Washington, you're thinking, you know what, if we can grab this one, we're right back in the
02:29mix.
02:29Of course, absolutely they are.
02:32Absolutely they are.
02:33The New York Giants are a ridiculous first place club.
02:38The NFC East has found a way to be worse than the NFC South, it appears.
02:43Hard to believe.
02:43The whole NFC playoff picture is a fascinating one because in this moment, and I think more will develop and
02:51become clear,
02:52but in this moment, the number of scary, like scary teams in the NFC, I'll just say it this way,
03:00is way fewer than we thought it was going to be.
03:02I mean, it's the Niners.
03:04The Vikings have a great defense.
03:06I think there's other teams that are trying to figure it out.
03:09The Bears have successfully navigated losing their quarterback for a short period of time before 4-2.
03:15I think they're very good.
03:17The Packers maybe woke up or maybe their schedule sucks.
03:20We'll figure that out over time.
03:22But still, they're 4-2.
03:23The Houston is over 500.
03:25I think there are other teams out there, but it's definitely fewer and less highbrow than we thought.
03:33Even if the Rams figure it out, they're nowhere near as good as anybody thought they were going to be,
03:37and that's just period, end of story.
03:38I just look at Chicago as a team that is, I mean, they can be a matchup problem for anybody,
03:43and then Seattle is still Seattle.
03:46The Niners played well enough to win.
03:48They didn't dominate Seattle, but they got the W, and Seattle's been a little bit up and down and hit
03:53and miss.
03:54But beyond that, as we talked about it before, like Philadelphia is not who we thought they were, and the
03:59South is kind of the South.
04:01And so I look at the Niners tonight, and we did this on the thread, and you kind of, you
04:06didn't say pump the brakes because you don't believe in pumping the brakes.
04:09No, but I dumped water all over everybody's fire.
04:11We were not going all the way to the end, but what it is set up to be, it's set
04:17up for them, the Niners, to go ahead and handle what you need to handle and be the one seed
04:22and have things go through Santa Clara.
04:24And my response to that is they've got a game tonight.
04:28Right.
04:29And that is it.
04:30And I, like, I literally, this is, okay, this is not sort of like my opinion on this, because why
04:37would you not want a wonderful start?
04:40But the stuff I'm hearing from the fan base right now, it's as if the start is too good.
04:48It's almost, it is flirting with being too good.
04:52And the reason for that is I hear people go, you've got to get the one seed.
04:57You have to win the Super Bowl.
05:00You have to be all in at the trade deadline.
05:04First of all, I don't think you need to worry about that.
05:06You've never had to worry about that when the Niners are good.
05:09They're going to be aggressive at the trade deadline.
05:11But for any one of you that is skipping the next 11 to 12 weeks of this football season, you
05:19are not watching what has happened to some of these other teams.
05:22You can wake up one morning and your QB is in the hospital, even though the last time you saw
05:29him, he's running around on the field looking normal.
05:31No, this can change at any minute.
05:34And the sense of security that I am hearing come over 49er fans right now, to me, is a little
05:42uncomfortable.
05:43That's all I'm saying.
05:45It's so wonderful that we're getting to a point where it's like, I don't even see how the Niners don't
05:50end up in the Super Bowl.
05:51And we're not even in November, let alone December, let alone January, let alone February.
05:56I don't know if it is that sense of security as much as it is like looking at the path
06:02and seeing that the path is pretty clear for you.
06:05You've got a three-game lead.
06:07If you win tonight, you've got three games on Seattle, really three and a half.
06:11The Rams are reeling.
06:12And as we mentioned, the other teams that you may have to compete with, one of them is Minnesota.
06:17And quietly, that game now in Mexico City could loom rather as a, you know, first place, number one seed
06:24kind of a battle.
06:24I'm not saying that you go ahead and rubber stamp them as the one seed.
06:28All I'm saying, and what maybe didn't come across in the text thread, is that the path now is more
06:34clear than we thought it would be.
06:36After five games, you've beaten Arizona, Seattle, and the Rams.
06:40You're 3-0 in the division.
06:42You're 5-0 overall.
06:43You're 3-0 in the conference.
06:45You win tonight.
06:45You're 4-0 in the conference.
06:46And you start to see the path, which is more clear than we thought, toward maybe being the one seed.
06:52There's no question.
06:53I get all that, but I, like, and again, we're fans, so it's not like we can get caught looking
06:59ahead.
06:59That's not going to affect the team.
07:01But, you know, this goes back to that controversial conversation between Shasky and Guru at the Summit.
07:08Like, I want to enjoy the season.
07:12And so when people look at the scenario that is playing out, which is that the Seahawks have lost two
07:18games in a row, one of them at your hands.
07:20The Rams look like they are totally sideways and now lost yet another division game.
07:26And they did it at home, and they only scored 16 points against a really bad team.
07:30And we wake up to Devontae Adams is probably going to miss most of, if not the entire rest of
07:35the season.
07:36All of these things pile on.
07:38What I want to do as a Niner fan tonight.
07:41Tonight, of course.
07:42Tonight, that is all that I want to think about.
07:45The 49ers have to win tonight.
07:48That's it.
07:49That's it.
07:49And that's all that you can do, obviously.
07:51And that's the task.
07:52And, you know, as a fan, you can think about whatever you want to think about going forward.
07:56And I'm kind of in that mind space as well.
07:58And even if you happen to have a misstep tonight against Washington, well, you're still 5-1.
08:04And you're still in a great spot going forward.
08:06And so if you want to talk about tonight and you want to look at a mobile quarterback and a
08:12quarterback who might be able to do things with his legs,
08:15you go back to last year and there were a few quarterbacks who were able to do that against you.
08:20Kyler Murray in the first matchup, he averaged six yards per carry on the ground when he was able to
08:25pull it down.
08:26So that might be a thing tonight that you have to keep your eye on.
08:29We'd love to hear from you, Niner fans.
08:31Is this all, like, too much too soon?
08:34Is it just going too well in your mind?
08:37Or is that all just kind of something that, you know, we talk about and think about?
08:44Or does that bleed into the locker room, right?
08:46I mean, I think I could argue that with the Rams, that there was some press-clipping stuff at the
08:52beginning of the season.
08:53Could the Niners be sort of vulnerable to that?
08:57Let's go to Rolando in Napa.
08:59Rolando, thank you very much for calling.
09:02Great to have you on the show.
09:04Hey, I'm a big fan.
09:05I love listening to you guys.
09:07I wish I was there, but I'm joined here to Napa.
09:09I'm getting ready for the game tonight.
09:10So I just wanted to tell you guys that you guys are doing an awesome job.
09:13So I appreciate everything you guys do there, 9-5-7.
09:16Thank you, Rolando.
09:18Appreciate that.
09:19I'm a big Niner fan, and like I said, I'm just excited for the game.
09:24And I do have a feeling that with all the injuries going on around the league and people blaming,
09:29usually it's us in substations.
09:32Now people are coming up with jokes about other teams in their substations.
09:35So, you know, the stars are lining for us, and I really do believe that.
09:39I have a prediction.
09:40I think the Niners are going to make multiple trade offers.
09:44So I expect to make at least two moves.
09:46That's my gut feeling because a lot of rumors and rumblings out there about, you know,
09:51unhappy teams, players, and the one receiver that really is going to –
09:56I don't know if you guys heard about it, but Brian Thomas was benched in Jacksonville.
10:01And you just, by saying benching that, you just lowered his trade value even more.
10:08So I – if I'm Lynch, you know, I make the call and get Brian Thomas.
10:13And also, too, I don't know if you guys heard about – what was going on with Cam Scadaboo?
10:18Did he get benched, too?
10:19Because I've made rumors about Harbaugh did not really play him in the game.
10:23I don't know if you guys heard anything about that.
10:25Yeah, he didn't touch the ball.
10:26He got benched.
10:27I mean, he didn't – like, he did play.
10:29He was in the game.
10:31He did not touch the ball.
10:32Cam has fumbled four times.
10:35John Harbaugh wants nothing to do with that.
10:37So they brought about a different rotation.
10:41And, of course, then after the game said, no, this was not a punishment or a benching.
10:44But I don't believe him.
10:46Well, and the player said the contrary.
10:47He's like, yeah, I mean, I know I can't fumble.
10:50And that, you know, he did what he did.
10:51And I have to be better than that.
10:53Yeah, absolutely.
