Willard and Dibs continue to react to the 49ers win over the Seahawks in Seattle and wonder what else people need to see from the 49ers at this stage of the season.

00:00is these two coaches, to me, are buttoned up.
00:02Their teams are buttoned up.
00:03I know there were penalties.
00:04I know there were turnovers.
00:05These are really good teams.
00:07They're smart teams, and they respect the game,
00:10and they play the game like so many of us, you know,
00:13the way we understand it.
00:15But we want to hear from you as much as possible,
00:17so let's keep doing it.
00:198 at 8, 9-5-7, 9-5-70.
00:21William in Texas is next.
00:23Hi, William.
00:23Thank you for calling us.
00:26What's up, guys?
00:27Bang, bang.
00:28Niner gang.
00:28Glad we beat the C-Chickens.
00:30Totally a great week.
00:32Here's where I don't want to break my own heart this year.
00:35If you watched that game yesterday,
00:37does that team beat the Kansas City Chiefs,
00:40who also has the running back that I feel like is the reason
00:43we lost all that last year?
00:45They're also not going to make the mistakes that Seattle made yesterday.
00:48So does that team beat the Kansas City Chiefs?
00:52Because I feel like that's the real team,
00:53and maybe it's because I'm in West Texas
00:55and I got to hear about Mahomes all the time,
00:57but I feel like that's the team that has the monkey on our back.
01:00They beat us twice in the Super Bowl.
01:02We can't seem to beat them in a regular season.
01:04We got to go play them this year in their stadium.
01:07So do we beat them this year?
01:10So, William, there's a few ways to answer that,
01:12and thank you for the call.
01:14Yeah, the Niners will go to Arrowhead two days after Christmas.
01:17So this is a lot of games between now and then.
01:22One thing, I don't think that the Chiefs are, quote-unquote,
01:25the team we can't beat.
01:26That's the team the fan base hasn't been able to beat.
01:29But, like, this 49ers team has relatively little in common
01:34with the teams that lost to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
01:37One of those teams was quarterback by Jimmy Garoppolo.
01:40We're getting to be a number of years removed from that,
01:43and I think that what yesterday really represents is even one year
01:47changes the chemistry and the ingredients of these matchups.
01:51So, look, that game's a long time from now,
01:54and there's a lot of things still to develop.
01:56We still need to get to know the Chiefs a little bit better
01:58on this sort of new Chiefs offense,
02:00which, by the way, has lost all of its receivers as well.
02:03But my quick answer, if I just take your question at face value,
02:08this 49er team kicks the living crap out of the Chiefs
02:12because that defense is not half of what the Seattle Seahawks' defense is.
02:18I think the Niners move the ball against the Chiefs at will.
02:21Does the Chiefs offense do it back to them?
02:24They're better.
02:25Patrick is better than Sam Donald.
02:27So that all remains to be seen.
02:29But from my view to where I sit,
02:34going to Seattle right now is harder than going to Kansas City.
02:38That's just how I see it in this moment.
02:39And I think that Seattle in this moment is better than Kansas City will be in that moment.
02:45I could be wrong.
02:46And if you want to look at the spot of it,
02:49you've got Kansas City.
02:50They play the Monday before they play the Niners on the Sunday.
02:54The Niners play on Thursday before they play Kansas City on the Sunday.
02:58So they will have an additional three days of rest as they make that travel to Kansas City.
03:04And again, in that spot, you don't know who's going to be where
03:07and you don't know which team is going to trade for which player and all the rest of it.
03:10But as far as who has had the Niners number,
03:14Kansas City defensively, yes.
03:15But I don't think that their defense this year is as good as it has been under Spags.
03:19But Seattle's defense is every bit as good, I think, this year as it was last year.
03:24But yesterday's game was such a funky, turnover-filled fest that it was going to take one team
03:31to get one drive, and you mentioned it, and the Niners had the one drive,
03:34and they had two really bad penalties, and they were able to overcome it.
03:38I mean, I think, look, if we're going to set aside Australia like so many people have,
03:44I don't like it, I won't do it, but a lot of people have.
03:48If you're going to set that one aside, I guess the Kansas City conversation goes this way.
03:55What the 49ers haven't done yet is really bottle up an elite quarterback.
04:01And again, I say that in believing that that comment is not fair.
04:06I don't think it's fair, but there's so many of you that want to be like,
04:10well, the Rams were tired.
04:11Okay, fine.
04:12So then Matt Stafford, I guess, and Puka Nakua don't count.
04:15I don't believe that, but it sounds to me like some of you do.
04:19And if you believe that, then I guess you could come from a place and say,
04:24no, no, no, they've got to do this with a Mahomes.
04:27They've got to do this with a Josh Allen or a Joe Burrow.
04:31Like, I mean, we're in another year where I don't know how many elite quarterbacks
04:36they're actually even going to go against.
04:38Right, and they actually have, their string will be Stafford at home,
04:42Herbert on the road, which, I mean, Herbert, Mahomes, and then Jalen Hurts.
04:47Which is another one.
04:49I mean, exactly.
04:49So, like, if you want to look at who exactly is the elite of the elite,
04:54well, Josh Allen, sure, Joe Burrow, and Brock Purdy.
04:58And Lamar's not on the schedule.
05:00Right.
05:00Like, so it's funny because you look at it at the beginning of the year,
05:04it's like, oh, well, they've got to face Jaden Daniels,
05:06and they've got to face Dak Prescott, and they've got to face Jackson Dart
05:10and Kyler Murray, and then to your point, Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert,
05:15and now you're kind of like, eh, I'm not really impressed by any of them.
05:19So, if you wanted to come from that place, okay,
05:22I think it's crazy to just act like Matt Stafford didn't count.
05:27But if you wanted to say that, all right, you know, yes,
05:31this was in a way, as we know, like, one of my big things going into last week's game
05:36or yesterday's game was we're making all of the pre-discussion
05:42about when the Niners have the ball.
05:45And can Kyle beat Mike?
05:47And we made it all about that.
05:49And I'm like, what about the other half of the game?
05:51And I felt pretty good watching that game that that take held up pretty well.
05:55Like, the 49ers, you forgot.
05:57You forgot that Sam Darnold needed to figure out the Niner defense,
06:01and I'd argue didn't.
06:02He didn't.
06:03It's the second game in a row that he's thrown a pick,
06:05the first time he's thrown the ball.
06:07Renato Green got him twice.
06:09The fumbles got him twice.
06:10The pass rush got to him.
06:12If that's a quarterback stat, then it's a quarterback stat.
06:15Brock Purdy was way better than Sam Darnold was in this football game.
06:19And so that was, to my way of thinking,
06:22that had a huge, huge piece in the outcome of this football game.
06:27For me, the hugest piece was the one time that you needed a drive
06:32and you got the drive.
06:33And it was against a good Seattle defense.
06:34And if you look at the yardage, it was 269 to 251, pretty even.
06:39Turnovers were 4 to 3.
06:41You had the 3, they had the 4,
06:42and that ultimately led to the biggest play of the game,
06:45which was the Grayson Halton forced recover touchdown.
06:49If that play doesn't happen, I think the second half might unfold
06:52a little bit differently.
06:53So it was a back-and-forth game.
06:55You got the ball.
06:56You needed to do something.
06:57And they did that.
06:59And that was the only time that any offense really did anything meaningful
07:03and prolonged against the other team.
07:05I didn't realize while it was happening the significance of it.
07:09But the more we sit here and talk about it,
07:12I really do believe what we were saying about 10 minutes ago.
07:16That was the drive this organization's been waiting for.
07:20And I understand it happened in week 5,
07:22and everybody would love to have it happen in week 21.
07:25And maybe it will.
07:27It's only a regular season drive.
07:29And they're only 5-0.
07:31But if I ask you this offseason, hey, Niner fans,
07:36so you're in Seattle, crowd is sideways,
07:40you were up by 8, now you're down by 5.
07:43It's the fourth quarter.
07:45No team has gone on a touchdown drive longer than 33 yards.
07:48You get the ball at your own 26,
07:51you'll have two major penalties on this drive.
07:53How are you feeling?
07:55There's not a Niner fan in the world that would have thought
07:57that that ended up with 8 points on the board.
08:00Well, especially if you add in, well, Debo is out.
08:02Oh, and Debo's out.
08:03Debo is a hammy.
08:04And so you don't have youth check.
08:06You've got Kittle and you've got, I think,
08:09Cowing was still in there at this point.
08:11Cowing and Brandon Cooks.
08:12And you've got Evans with some ribs that are healthy,
08:15I would imagine.
08:16So you're probably not feeling super great,
08:19especially when it starts with an offensive pass interference
08:22on a guy named Cooks who's wearing 84.
08:25And you're thinking, God,
08:26how many other guys have worn 84 on this team?
08:29Totally.
08:29And there's been so many 84s.
08:31Ephraim was so funny last night.
08:32He's like, when did you all get Brandon Cooks?
08:36I'm like, three weeks ago.
08:38He was in a van.
08:39And then he came to the Niners.
08:41And here he is catching touchdowns off the turf.
08:44That was a beautiful catch.
08:46Great throw, too.
08:47I mean, that's the only place he could have thrown it.
08:48And so I was thinking of you in that drive when it started,
08:52because not that you were like, oh, whatever.
08:5512th man, you mean nothing.
08:56Because your old thing last week was like,
08:58the 12th man, you're taking too much credit for what you do.
09:01But in that moment, you go, Niners pick, they score.
09:06Debo fumbles and gets hurt.
09:08Seattle goes and makes a field goal.
09:09Now you get the ball back.
09:10And it was like the crowd was bananas.
09:14And how'd you do, crowd?
09:15They did great.
09:16Oh, did they?
09:18Because the silent snappers went right down the field.
09:22They didn't quite go right down the field.
09:24Had the refs get in their way.
09:26Well, you hang on now.
09:29The first penalty was not the refs getting in their way.
09:31No, no, the fourth penalty was on the Niners.
09:33Right.
09:33But the intentional grounding was a bunch of crap.
09:37It was a weird and I...
09:39A complete and total bunch of crap.
09:42I wonder where, you know, you've got, I guess,
09:45two or three of the officials in the field
09:47who have the jurisdiction to look at that
09:49and maybe talk about it and maybe reverse it.
09:51But it was such a weird play.
09:53Totally.
09:54My thing is more with the process
09:55where we can look at all different kinds of things
09:59and we can, you know, go to New York
10:01and have them take a look at it.
10:02But this one, which was, to me, pretty clear cut.
10:06Yeah, he's in the tackle box,
10:07but the receiver is like three or four,
10:09maybe five yards away.
10:11Close enough to where you could, like,
10:13pretend that he was actually throwing it to him,
10:15even though he wasn't.
10:16Yeah, no, it's not even necessarily about intent.
10:18How many times do you see a quarterback huck it directly at the feet
10:22of a running back who's right next to him?
10:24He's intentionally grounding it.
10:26He's intentionally grounding it, but that is okay.
10:28He's intentionally grounding it when they're out of the pocket.
10:31He's like, they throw the ball away all the time,
10:34but completely within the letter of the rules.
10:37And the refs screwed the Niners
10:39and Brock Purdy and Mike Evans shrugged it off
10:42like it was nothing.
10:44And so that is the scenario that has dogged this team
10:48for a long time
10:49and been a big part of the narrative about them.
10:52And so I really do not want that to get undersold
10:56or swept under the rug as,
10:58oh, Brock was, you know, okay in the first half,
11:01but it was nice at the end.
11:02No, no, no, don't do that.
11:04That was Brock and Kyle doing what many have said
11:08they could not do.
11:09And they did it against the best defense in football
11:13in the hardest building in football in the fourth quarter.
11:17So there it is.
11:19There it is.
11:20So now, no, they can't do it.
11:22No, no, no, no, they did it.
11:23That fourth quarter comeback.
11:24They did it.
11:25I mean, for sure.
11:25And you look at, you know, first and 20
11:28after the PI on Cooks
11:31and then Shanahan has to burn a timeout
11:33because, you know, they didn't reset the clock or whatever
11:35and he's losing his Casey Schmidt
11:37and everybody, ah, the crowd's going bananas.
11:39Now it's first and 20
11:40and you're thinking, all right, just don't turn it over
11:43and maybe you punt it
11:44and maybe you get another chance,
11:45but it's pow, 15 to Evans on a great throw.
11:49All of a sudden from first and 20,
11:51now it's second and five.
11:52Okay, the drive's alive
11:53and you mentioned it on first and 10
11:55at their 26, intentional grounding
11:58on his two-hand bounce pass
12:00and it's like, okay,
12:01well, now they'll probably have to settle for three
12:03because now it's first and, I'm sorry,
12:06it's second and 21, loss of down
12:08and you're at the 37, like, okay,
12:10just gain a little bit
12:11and set up Pinheiro, hope he makes it,
12:13but instead it's, what?
12:14Evans for 28
12:15and now you're inside the 10.
12:17All right, Brock, Kyle, Mike.
12:20Impressive.
12:21Yep, and the improvisation,
12:23the buying time from Brock Purdy
12:26with his legs on that goal-to-go drive
12:30once Evans makes the catch,
12:32the ability to buy time
12:34and find Brandon Cooks
12:36and then buy time and find Mike Evans
12:38on the two-point conversion.
12:40These, like, these are the plays.
12:43This is what is setting the 49ers apart right now.
12:46This is why they are the best team in football.
12:49I would argue there's one quarterback right now,
12:52you know, who is combining
12:56the elite pocket processing
12:58with followed by the ability to then improvise.
13:04Like Josh Allen, amazing improvisation.
13:07Joe Burrow, incredible pocket processing.
13:11Patrick Mahomes, yeah, a little of both.
13:13He's not moving as well this year,
13:15still coming back from that injury.
13:17But Brock Purdy right now is the one who is,
13:20not the only one, but he's doing it the best.
13:23He is the best, kind of like the Niners
13:25are the most balanced team in football, in my opinion.
13:27He is the most balanced quarterback
13:29with regard to pocket processing
13:31combined with using his legs to buy more time.
13:35When need be, and you actually mentioned
13:38two of the plays I highlighted,
13:39but the one in between was the one
13:42where he goes to Kittle
13:43and he had to drop down and go almost underhand
13:45his little sidearm flip.
13:47Because again, under pressure,
13:49that was between the Evans big play.
13:51It was first and goal from the nine
13:53and he's pressured again and he's buying time
13:55and you're thinking, throw it away.
13:57And he drops down and just a little bit Mahomes-ian.
13:59That was total Mahomes, like sidearm flip,
14:02little flipper.
14:03And you know, Kittle gets two yards,
14:05but two is better than zero or minus seven
14:07or whatever it would have been.
14:08If Mahomes had done that,
14:10Chris Collinsworth would have flown somewhere
14:12to be there live to hand out flowers.
14:17Zach and Concord.
14:18Hi, Zach.
14:19Thank you so much for calling us.
14:20What's up?
14:21888-957-9570.
14:24Hey, gentlemen.
14:24Great day.
14:25Just loving this, loving the energy,
14:26love listening to both of you all the time.
14:28And you guys are right.
14:29You're nailing it.
14:30And Will, but I always agree with you.
14:32I agree with you 100%.
14:33That is the most important in-season drive
14:36we have had under the Shanahan era.
14:38I want to give some flowers to Raheem Morris, man.
14:41That guy, and anybody who dismisses the Australia beatdown
14:45of the Rams is loony.
14:47And I'm sorry, that game counts.
14:49And the Rams played that game as if that game didn't count,
14:52and we did.
14:53And I saw in that game the difference that Raheem Morris
14:56is making in this defense, in Renardo Green, in other guys.
15:00But he's also scheming, and he's blitzing,
15:02and he's doing things to trick the quarterback
15:04to create pressure where we haven't seen that in a long time.
15:08And it makes it fun to watch both sides of the ball
15:12because he is as creative on defense
15:14as Shanahan is on offense, I think.
15:17I couldn't agree more, Zach.
15:19I mean, thank you so much for calling, Zach.
15:22Appreciate it.
15:22I mean, look, the way that the defense is called and whatnot,
15:27I don't think there's many of us fans
15:30who feel like super educated about the way that all plays out.
15:34We're just like, yeah, defense, go get ball carrier.
15:36Be mean, but there's something that Raheem Morris
15:40has clearly done on two levels.
15:43This is what I see.
15:44A, they very much look more aggressive.
15:48They are stunting more.
15:49They are blitzing more.
15:51They are more aggressive.
15:52That's great.
15:54But other than that, what I also see
15:56is that you have a group that is just clearly more confident.
16:02The defensive backs have been saying this for two months now.
16:07They're just like, we love this.
16:09We love what Raheem is doing.
16:11Diamant O'Lenor came on this show, and we asked him, like, what is it?
16:14And he goes, well, he's just one of us.
16:17He's a defensive back.
16:19And so the way he builds us up makes us feel much more bulletproof
16:23than maybe we did in the past.
16:25Now, clearly, I don't want to make this about Salah versus Morris.
16:29Raheem Morris has, you know, Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw playing for him.
16:34And Salah in the back half of the year didn't have those things,
16:38and that changes everything.
16:39But we've been saying it.
16:41Kyle Shanahan always does too.
16:42When you've got a pass rush,
16:44it makes life for the rest of the defensive backfield so much easier.
16:48And, like, raise your hand if you think that Renardo Green and Jair Brown
16:57and Marquis Siegel and Malik Mustafa look like different players.
17:03I raise my hand.
17:05They look like different players.
17:07They are playing so well.
17:09Not perfect.
17:09Nobody does.
17:10But they are playing so well.
17:12And so I just see a swagger with this group that they clearly did not have
17:18on the back half of next year.
17:20And it sounds like this group might add Nick Bosa here pretty soon.
17:23Pretty soon.
17:23And if you look at what they're doing,
17:26I think it's a lot more exotic and unpredictable.
17:29And so when you are doing four-man fronts
17:32and then you're bringing an extra guy or two extra guys
17:35and you saw Fred Warner and, you know, Dre Greenlaw,
17:38while he was in there, you saw them blitz a bunch
17:40and they had a five-man front and they're bringing five.
17:42They're bringing four.
17:43They're bringing six.
17:44I think that when you do different things,
17:46and again, it's not about Robert Sala,
17:48where his approach was much more conservative.
17:52It was a four-man front always, almost always,
17:54and you didn't blitz very often.
17:56And so offenses, I think, had a good idea of what you were doing.
17:59And with Raheem Morris, you don't really know
18:01what they're going to come with.
18:02And so you get a lot more pressure.
18:05You get a lot more blitzing.
18:06And I think from a secondary standpoint, that obviously helps a lot.
18:10No question about it.
18:11So he's done a wonderful job.
18:13And this is what happens when you're 5-0.
18:14Right now, we're just completely freaking thrilled with everybody.
18:18Everything.
18:18Do you know what I mean?
18:19Like, how can you not be?
18:20You're just thrilled with the defensive coordinator.
18:23You're thrilled with the head coach.
18:24You're thrilled with the draft.
18:26You're thrilled with the general manager.
18:27I saw this a lot yesterday.
18:29Is Mike Evans the greatest free agent acquisition in the Bay since?
18:34Fill in that blank.
18:36Wow.
18:37Fill it in.
18:38Gabby Williams.
18:39That's a good answer.
18:40Oh, yeah.
18:41Grandy is locked in.
18:42That's a very, very good answer.
18:45All right.
18:45Off till Saturday.
18:46Okay.
18:47It's going to be a long week.
18:48Yeah, Grandy, you get to go on vacation on Thursday.
18:50Good job.
18:52Anyone else come to mind?
18:55I mean, Willie Adames?
18:58Probably not.
18:59Yeah.
19:01I mean, I'm trying to think of a giant that would have been fine.
19:06Yeah.
19:06How about a Niner?
19:08How about a Niner?
19:09Like, again, Christian McCaffrey wasn't a free agent.
19:11Trent Williams wasn't a free agent.
19:12Right.
19:13I think they traded for Keon White as well.
19:15They traded for also Odiki's.
19:17Oh, wow.
19:18Yeah.
19:19I mean.
19:19But by the way, Devo was a free agent, essentially.
19:23Yeah, that's true.
19:23That's true.
19:24But Mike Evans greater than all of those guys anyway right now.
19:28If you look at the drive we've been referencing, it was Mike Evans.
19:32He had four of his seven catches on that drive.
19:35It was first and 20.
19:36He got you 15.
19:37Second and five.
19:39He got you eight.
19:40Third and 10.
19:40He got you 23.
19:42Second and 21.
19:43He got you 28.
19:44And then he got the two-point conversion.
19:47So you need a big play.
19:48And now you have, for the first time in a long time,
19:51you have a real number one wide receiver, OG, Hall of Famer.
19:57Like, you've had Kittle and Devo, great.
19:59Ayuk, when he was actually playing football early on, was great.
20:03You've had some great receivers.
20:04But now you've got that, sorry, Greg Cosell, boundary X.
20:08You've got that true boundary X.
20:10And on that drive, you threw to your boundary X.
