Willard and Dibs react to the 49ers' 24-14 win over the Broncos to improve to 4-0 on the 2026 season. Is there any debate if the 49ers are the best team in the NFL?
Transcript
00:00And I would like to start the show by attempting, attempting to ban a phrase for the day and maybe
00:08for the week.
00:10I would like to. I am pitching this. I'm not writing it in ink.
00:15Y'all can say whatever you want, but I don't, I would, I would prefer to not hear this phrase
00:21all week long.
00:22Ready?
00:25Tap the brakes.
00:27Tap the brakes?
00:28Tap the brakes.
00:30On like, they're going to win the Super Bowl?
00:32How about no. No, I will not tap the brakes.
00:37It doesn't matter that, yes, games still need to be played.
00:41The aforementioned, I referred to our friend Matt in San Jose, who I heard call the guys about an hour
00:47and a half ago.
00:48And I thought he made a great point.
00:49How the hell can everybody show up in August with preseason Super Bowl predictions,
00:55mint the Rams as the greatest roster they've ever seen, and everybody dives into that and bites into it like
01:02a PB&J sandwich.
01:03But four weeks in, we're not allowed to react to what we're seeing.
01:07Okay?
01:07I don't know if they're going to the Super Bowl.
01:10There's a whole journey ahead.
01:11There's months called November and December and January that still need to happen.
01:15But here's what I can say.
01:16The 49ers are the best team in football right now.
01:19They are the best team in football, in my opinion, bar none.
01:24They have now taken on different kinds of challenges, different kinds of opponents, different vibes of football games.
01:32And they have passed all of these tests already.
01:35And they have done, they did it again yesterday by double digits.
01:40However they got there, they got there.
01:43To me, that's the mark of a really, really good team when you can do it in a bunch of
01:47different ways.
01:47So, this isn't about stats, this isn't even about projections.
01:52This is my statement.
01:54Four weeks in to the NFL season, the 49ers are the best team in the country.
02:01And there's no need to tap the brakes on that because they've played four games.
02:04Everyone's played four games except for New Orleans and Atlanta coming up tonight.
02:09And the pick is in as I try to wrap up a 4-0 week, by the way, bro.
02:14Don't let him get hot!
02:14Unfade the dip with three in a row, he's already hot.
02:18But right now, it's through four weeks.
02:19It's hard to look at the Niners and say anything other than, yeah, they're the best team.
02:23And you can debate Kansas City.
02:25That's fine.
02:25They had to dig deep to beat the Raiders.
02:27But the one thing that I come in today with as far as a statement and a belief is that
02:33was the best win of the year, of the four.
02:35Miami, Arizona, both at home.
02:37I don't think either team is very good.
02:39You beat the Rams in Australia, and that was a good win.
02:42And I think it was lessened by the fact that they have gone on and been a little bit sideways.
02:48They shouldn't have won yesterday, but they did.
02:51They should have beat the Broncos, but they didn't.
02:53And so Denver came in playing your brand of ball.
02:56We're going to hit you as hard as you hit us.
02:58That game was more physical than most games that I can actually remember seeing on both sides.
03:04And you had injuries both ways.
03:06And ultimately, it took a special team's play.
03:08And Kyle Shanahan told his team on Saturday, I'm challenging you special teamers to get us the ball.
03:15Go ahead and create a turnover.
03:17And they did.
03:17And that was the biggest play in the game.
03:19No doubt.
03:20I thought the Kyle Shanahan, and we'll play some of it for you, his commentary after the game was wild
03:25to me.
03:27Absolutely wild.
03:28In many ways predicting, in order to win this football game, we're going to need a turnover on special team.
03:33Right.
03:34What?
03:35Who the hell goes into a game thinking that?
03:37That sounds so quirky and like, I don't know.
03:41Let's be real.
03:42A little bit lucky.
03:42You can have whatever your opinion is as to whether or not that was a fumble.
03:46We could probably debate it all week.
03:47But the bottom line is, that's what it was called.
03:50That's what it was confirmed.
03:52But I was like, wait a minute.
03:54You predicted that?
03:55You sort of hoped for that?
03:57I get it.
03:57He was challenging the group to do it.
03:59He did it.
04:00And that's why the sideline went so crazy.
04:04And I'll admit it to you, just from the files of the living room, that one was the biggest, you
04:12know how I do, like the dining room lap.
04:14You know when something happens and you're like.
04:16You start running.
04:17You can't sit still.
04:18That was, of the four games, that was the biggest one of the year because it represented so much more
04:26than just getting a fumble.
04:27It just felt like that game was going to be 3-3 until, I don't know, maybe this morning it
04:33was.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Until somebody won 6-3.
04:35Right.
04:35Is this going to just.
04:36And that moment was like, oh man, they finally flipped the field.
04:41And they're going to go put some real points on the board.
04:43And then they did, the offense deserves credit for that, which is that, that was a hard assignment yesterday.
04:49But then, when given the field, they were able to turn it into 6.
04:54Thank you, Kalon Black, for being Johnny on the spot on that fourth down play.
04:59All of those things.
05:00Certain bounces went their way, but they made the most of them.
05:03And that's what a good team does.
05:04Right.
05:04And you look at the two drives that led up to that punt that you ultimately got back.
05:08And it was six plays for four yards.
05:10It was three and out.
05:11It was three and out, and you were on the wrong side of the field.
05:14And that punt was a 64-yard soaring punt.
05:18It wasn't even, you know, something to the middle of the field.
05:21It was so far down the field that Denver thought that they had a return.
05:24Mims thought, okay, he just punted that 64 yards.
05:27I can do some things with this.
05:29But not so fast, because Saran Neal was able to break through the gunner, get all the way down there,
05:34and meet him, grab the leg, which was kind of a weird tackle.
05:38You're like, okay, hold on.
05:39And then somehow punched the ball out.
05:41It just was one of those unbelievable individual plays.
05:44Like you said, it flipped the field.
05:46It flipped the game.
05:47You score to go up 10-3, and now you're in control.
05:50Well, and right now, when the 49ers go up by seven, you suddenly, to me, you feel like,
05:58okay, I think they're in control, which is wild.
06:02Okay, that whole defensive line is hurt.
06:05But at any point, I get the one at the end.
06:09But in the meat of the game, when it was still a one-score game, did it appear to you
06:14like the Denver Broncos were ever going to use the end zone all day long?
06:19Like, the 49ers, I know that the Arizona game got a little wild.
06:24They possessed the ball really, really well.
06:27But this bend-don't-break strategy, outside of that Arizona game, let me think.
06:33Correct me if I'm wrong.
06:34So, you got the Waddell touchdown at the end yesterday.
06:37Let's go back to Miami.
06:39Miami didn't use the end zone until that garbage time breakaway.
06:43And the Rams got one touchdown.
06:45That's it.
06:46Like, they are not letting the other team score touchdowns.
06:52It's a very good strategy.
06:53And they're not even really letting the other team get in the red zone.
06:57And yesterday, Denver was one for one.
06:58And that was about it.
07:00And that was the final touchdown they got to cut it to 17-14.
07:04But the drive you're talking about, where it was a 10-3 game, Denver drove all the way down to
07:09about the 22-yard line.
07:11But you've got to settle for a field goal.
07:13So, they're giving up field goals, not touchdowns.
07:15They're not giving up explosives.
07:17They're mixing up the coverages.
07:18They're blitzing.
07:19And they're down about seven defensive linemen.
07:22The Niners are 4-0.
07:24That could not have gone better.
07:26We'll get to Seattle later in the week.
07:28Seattle, here we go.
07:29But the 49ers are 4-0 and sitting atop the NFC next to the Minnesota Vikings.
