Willard and Dibs continue to react to yesterday's 49ers win over the Seahawks and explain how this is an entirely new team from when the 49ers last played the Seahawks in January.
Transcript
00:00There's sort of the small of it and then there's the big of it when you look at a game
00:04like this.
00:05The small of it is, okay, they won a football game.
00:09It's just week five.
00:10You know, two-thirds of the season still need to unfold
00:13and you got to keep this person healthy and that person healthy.
00:17But I don't think it can be overstated that the 49ers walked into this season
00:23with one very mainstated challenge that they were not sure if they could change.
00:32I would argue that Kyle Shanahan and company spent the majority of the offseason
00:39trying to crack that nut.
00:42How do we make that look different?
00:45And look at what they did.
00:47I loved when Kyle yesterday, when he's being asked about Mike Evans,
00:50he's like, that's why he's here.
00:52That's why he's here.
00:54We went and did that to change this game.
00:59And for him to have that profound of an effect,
01:02think about when the Niners left Seattle last year.
01:06You answer me.
01:07What did it feel like they couldn't do?
01:10Everything.
01:11Okay, but like spotlight.
01:13What could the Niners not do in Seattle last year?
01:17Run the ball.
01:18Pass the ball.
01:20Stop the run.
01:22Contain their special teams returns.
01:25Basically, everything.
01:26They couldn't do anything.
01:27Seattle was just flat better across the board.
01:30All right, here's Kyle Shanahan on Mike Evans.
01:33No, that's exactly it.
01:34I mean, that was the one drive that got us going.
01:35I think it was like 12 plays or something.
01:37And we had to overcome a few penalties.
01:40I don't know if there was a sack,
01:41but we were not in good down in distance on a number of them.
01:44I think it was just penalties.
01:45Mike and Brock to be able to get us back in there with some explosives and be able to get
01:49in the end zone was huge.
01:50That's exactly why I was here.
01:51So we talked about this as soon as it was all over last year, and we all felt this.
01:58The Niners go into the offseason, and we're thinking, okay, Nick Bosa is now, when he comes back, he's going
02:07to be coming off of his third torn ACL.
02:10I would argue, if I'm the general manager of the Niners, one of the main things I'm going to think
02:14is,
02:15I've got to be able to create a pass rush that doesn't crumble if Nick Bosa's not there.
02:23Check!
02:24They were incredible yesterday.
02:27And in theory, they should be getting better.
02:30Mike L. Williams is back.
02:31He's getting ramped up.
02:32Nick Bosa, per Kyle Shanahan today, has got a shot for Monday night.
02:37So this pass rush is only going to get better.
02:41But they were fantastic.
02:42The other big narrative was, there's no separation from the wide receivers.
02:47There's nobody who can just take on those ball-hawking Seattle defensive backs and scare them and beat one-on
02:56-one coverage.
02:57So what do the Niners do?
02:59Let's go get Mike Evans, and let's draft Dajon Stribling.
03:02And the Stribling thing has been put on pause.
03:05But Mike Evans, all by himself, changes this matchup.
03:10And once you do that, poof, look what happens to Christian McCaffrey, who averaged over six yards a carry yesterday.
03:16It's all complimentary.
03:19The 49ers had a wonderful offseason.
03:22And I don't know that we were fully ready to talk about that, because let's add in the draft, too,
03:27which is already paying dividends.
03:30They had a wonderful offseason because it was all based, in many ways, on this game.
03:36Just the ability in that building against that team to make it look different.
03:41And they did it.
03:42And they did it in a major way.
03:44Well, and they have a wide receiver one now.
03:46And it's funny you say about, you know, Mike Evans and what they didn't have, which was separation.
03:50And I'm going to borrow from Bill Barnwell, who was doing a whole thing on Marvin Harrison Jr.
03:55And how he doesn't hit more than 18 miles an hour on his routes very often.
04:00And he doesn't separate.
04:01The other players who don't do either one of those things include, and I won't go through the whole list,
04:06there are nine players outside of Marvin Harrison.
04:10And one of them is Jawan Jennings, and the other two are A.J. Brown and Mike Evans.
04:15So Mike Evans doesn't really separate.
04:17He doesn't really run that fast.
04:20But when he's open by, I don't know, a half a shoulder or a third of an arm or a
04:25quarter of a calf,
04:27you throw the ball near him and he gets it.
04:29Exactly.
04:29And we saw it yesterday.
04:30And so it's funny because it's not even about separation, which I do believe that Dijon Scribbling would have been
04:36more of a separation guy.
04:38And certainly Ricky Pearsall, when healthy, he's a guy who can separate.
04:41He's fast.
04:42He runs great routes.
04:43But Mike Evans is not that fast relative to receivers.
04:47He doesn't separate that well relative to receivers.
04:50But throw the ball near him and he will catch it.
04:53Well, let me restate.
04:54Because you remember, the reason I use that word is that's the word we all left out on the table
04:59last season.
05:00And I'm not trying to call you out as saying the wrong thing.
05:03But I think it's just remarkable that they found the exact guy.
05:06And Jawan Jennings is on that list, by the way.
05:09For sure.
05:09And he's awesome at that.
05:11When people said separator, I think the more accurate way to say it was the 49ers didn't have good man
05:17beaters.
05:18Mike Evans is a phenomenal man beater.
05:21And he doesn't need to be five yards from his defender to be a great man beater.
05:26Do you want to know what question I keep asking when they show highlight clips of Brock hitting Mike Evans?
05:31I'm like, why did he throw that?
05:33You ever get the all 22 and you're like, he's not open.
05:37He's not open.
05:38But Brock's looking at it going, you know, if I hit that quarter right there, 25 yards down the field,
05:44because it's Mike Evans, I think we can either back shoulder this or we can toe tap this.
05:50It's all happening or at times, and I thought this was true on the two-point conversion, I'm just going
05:56to give Mike a shot.
05:58He's not open, but he's big.
06:00The other guy's a little smaller.
06:02I'm going to put it in his area and see if he can come down with it.
06:04And he does it.
06:05He does it.
06:06Now, Jawan, he did that at times as well, but not to this level.
06:10He's just not nearly as dynamic.
06:12So, to me, that's what I kept thinking yesterday, and I bet a lot of people are with me on
06:19that.
06:19The anxiety going into that game was not even centered on would they win or lose.
06:25It was simply would it look different.
06:28I think the Niners, in some ways, could have stomached a loss if it was a close game and a
06:35well-played game.
06:36But the anxiety for me going into the game was, please make this look different.
06:42Please don't be physically overwhelmed again in this game.
06:46Please, like, get eight yards on a run play.
06:49You know what I mean?
06:50Yeah, first play from scrimmage, they got eight.
06:52Brock, drop back and don't have somebody in your face, in your lap right away be able to complete a
06:58pass.
06:58All of these things actually got answered in the first three plays.
07:02Now, George dropped the ball.
07:04Bummer.
07:04But I came away from that drive, ticked off that they didn't flip the field, but at the same time,
07:10I was like, ooh, that looked different.
07:13And that's what I was worried about going into this game.
07:16And I think if you look at the next three plays, which were, you know, Wilson goes for seven, and
07:21you're thinking, okay, the run defense, we've seen this all year so far, not great.
07:25And then Duggar gets a sack, and then Renardo Green gets his first of two picks.
07:29And so, immediately I was thinking, all right, this defense is a little bit more aggressive.
07:34They're a little bit different.
07:35And so, it was a three and out, and then it was a three, and we got the turnover, and
07:39then they go down and they score.
07:40And you're thinking, okay, this looks and feels a little bit different.
07:43And then the game from there got really kind of funky.
07:47Seven turnovers.
07:47First game since 2020 that the Niners played when there were seven total turnovers.
07:52And that was a game against the Rams that they actually also won.
07:55And I really think you can hang your hat on this, too, if you're a 49er fan.
08:02Dive deep into the metrics.
08:03I know you do.
08:04How many times have you watched the game?
08:06Twice so far.
08:07Twice so far.
08:08Well, I have it up now, so I'm kind of going through it for the third time during the breaks.
08:12I will, but yeah.
08:13Let me know if you come up with anything.
08:15I will, no doubt.
08:16Any new observations?
08:16Well, before Cosell, I tried to go through at least three, if not four times.
08:19And, I mean, there's a couple things that I didn't love about yesterday, but.
08:24Like what?
08:24Well, late in the game, they went to a 13 personnel situation.
08:29And I think McCaffrey was either, he was probably gassed.
08:32So, McCaffrey goes for eight.
08:34Then he goes for 13.
08:35Kittle with a great block downfield.
08:37And then they throw to CMC.
08:39And he needs a little bit of a breather.
08:40And so, Black goes for 11.
08:42And then a screen back to McCaffrey.
08:44And then he goes out.
08:45And it's Black for five.
08:46And third and one at the 24.
08:48And they brought back Kalon Black.
08:50And it was 13 personnel.
08:52And they brought Willis in the backfield.
08:54And I guess that would have been a classic use check moment.
08:56And so, they tried to get, I think, a little bit too cute.
09:00And so, Willis goes to lead block.
09:01And he gets nothing.
09:02And Poonie gets overwhelmed.
09:04And Kalon Black ends up losing the yard.
09:06And that's where they had to kick the field goal.
09:08Kick the game-winning field goal, yeah.
09:08Right.
09:09But, I mean, again, it's nitpicking because they won the game.
09:11But that was one where maybe I thought you could have used a timeout.
09:15And, you know, brought McCaffrey back after a little bit of a breather.
09:18I don't know.
09:19I mean, it's minor.
09:22And there was, you know.
09:23It's tough.
09:24I mean, it's always like that's, you know, classically the rearview mirror kind of a concept.
09:30I mean, they were running the ball well.
09:33I get it.
09:34Could McCaffrey have come back?
09:35I like the way Black is running the ball.
09:38You're thinking about the clock at that moment too.
09:40You're thinking about your defense.
09:43You certainly want to, I mean, you've got to come away with points.
09:47And it's funny.
09:49I accept where you're coming from on that.
09:52You want to know what my first thought was coming out of that drive?
09:55Boy, I'm glad that Kyle Shanahan is the coach of this football team.
09:59What percentage of head coaches in this banana head NFL that I'm watching right now, tie game, fourth and a
10:11yard and a half.
10:12How much time?
10:13How much time did they go?
10:14It was the two-minute warning.
10:15Two-minute warning.
10:16At the 25.
10:17How many of you banana heads would have gone for it?
10:20I know Philly would have.
10:21I know Detroit would have.
10:23I would say 0%, but it's so much higher than 0%.
10:2788% banana heads.
10:31I mean, everywhere.
10:33Dan Quinn wouldn't have kicked it in Washington.
10:35Dan Quinn would have had his team run the other way.
10:37Totally.
10:38Dan Quinn would have been like, I think we already won.
10:40Why don't you just run around in a circle and fall down?
10:43Like, I don't know what the hell I'm even watching anymore.
10:46So I have Jacksonville in the survivor pool.
10:49As did I.
10:50And I'm watching that, and it's first and goal from the one, second and goal from the one.
10:55I don't know, third and goal from the one.
10:57Let's try fourth and goal from the one.
10:59Here's an idea.
11:00Liam, kick it now so later when you need to kick it, you can kick it later.
11:05If you kick it now, you can kick it later.
11:07If you don't kick it now, you can't kick it later.
11:10My God, how did they win that game?
11:12I don't know how they won.
11:13Well, they won that game because the other coach is a bigger banana head than he is.
11:17I'm actually like Liam Cohen, but dude, clean your act up.
11:20They've had 26 penalties in two weeks.
11:22I thought yesterday, one of the things that stood out that most people wouldn't think of
11:27because we're emotional and we're just into the game, and I get it.
11:31But Mike McDonald and Kyle Shanahan, I hope this rivalry that's only going to get bigger,
11:37I hope it appreciates both of these coaches.
11:40Because they are two of the only non-banana heads right now coaching in the National Football League.
11:47Buttoned up.
11:48Yes, there were turnovers.
11:50Yes, there were mistakes.
11:51But they are high-level play callers.
11:54And Mike McDonald, how many times did he send his kicker out into the field?
11:58Felt like 82, I believe.
12:0082 field goals for Seattle yesterday.
12:02Good job, Niner defense, in limiting them.
12:05But thank you, Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDonald, for not playing Madden yesterday.
12:12Look what you produced.
12:14Best game the NFL has had to offer this year, and it's not even close.
12:19Points is what you produced.
12:20Thank you for not playing Madden.
12:23Thank you for playing football.
12:24I appreciated the experience of watching football yesterday by two smart individuals who know what they're doing
12:32and have the people to deploy to go out there and execute.
12:36They may want to teach ball security.
12:39And, you know, that's on you, Mike, by the time you play again.
12:42Because, you know, you've got a play.
12:44And I heard somebody call earlier with Bonte and Guru talking about,
12:47I can't believe that they tried to run the ball there at the end of the half.
12:51Well, you're not just going to kneel.
12:53The Niners have all their timeouts.
12:54You're not just going to, like, quarterback sneak and kneel, kneel, kneel.
12:57Yeah, even I think was it Burkhardt even said they're going to kneel.
13:00I'm like, they can't kneel.
13:01They can't.
13:02They're going to have to punt from the one if they kneel.
13:04Exactly.
13:04And so they're at the four, and so you give it to your running back,
13:07and you hope that he's able to, I don't know, two arms on the ball and at least get back
13:11to the line.
13:11But he's holding that thing low for bread, and in comes Grayson Halton,
13:15like you're talking about with the draft, and actually we had dinner with Pop Pop last night,
13:22and we were, you know, I was telling him how, yeah, I use your sheet all the time
13:25about all those failed draft picks, but I don't know, Pop Pop, this year we may have to, like,
13:31we may have to do a new sheet because I'm going to take a year off, Pop Pop.
13:34These picks are looking pretty good.
13:36Oh, man.
13:37Grayson, bleeping Halton.
13:39Grayson Halton.
13:39Jaden Duggar was in the fifth, fifth round.
13:43Duggar in the fifth.
13:44Fourth round.
13:45Don't leave the offensive guys out.
13:47Kalon Black.
13:49We haven't even gotten to see shriveling yet.
13:52Yeah.
13:53Yeah.
13:54They got some players in the draft this year.
13:56There's no choice about it.
13:58Just the grease and halton piece, and just defensively yesterday,
14:00thinking about, you know, Malik Mustafa with a couple of monster hits.
14:03Fred Warner, who we don't talk enough about, although we talk about him constantly
14:08because he's that good, but another peanut punch for Fred.
14:12Go ahead and punch that thing right out.
14:14And Dre Greenlaw, yeah, he got ejected, but he was impactful before that.
14:18Keon White was in the mix, and your boy Odigizua making things happen in the middle.
14:25I can't wait to hear Grandy's grades tomorrow.
14:28I haven't seen him, but, man, that defense, you look at it, you gave up 29 points,
14:33but that defense was phenomenal.
14:35There's something in my algorithm.
14:36Every time I open up social media right after the game, Grandy's grades are like,
14:40pa-pow!
14:40And I'm like, I don't want to look at him yet!
14:42It's because you look at her eyes.
14:44You love Grandy, and you're also a teacher, and you give out grades.
14:47Yeah.
14:47So I think that that's the confluence right there.
14:49I think, yeah, the phone's been listening to me.
14:50They're like, they've heard Grandy, they've heard grades.
14:53Yeah.
14:53And so there it is.
14:54And I'm like, I don't want to see it.
14:55And then I see it, and then there's one of them that'll piss me off,
14:57and then I'm like, oh, if I'm crying out loud, now I can't sleep.
15:00It's a whole thing.
15:01I never see him because I hate Grandy, and I spent 13 years in college.
15:05I had bad grades.
15:06Let's check out.
15:08Both parts.
15:10I give you a C for that take.
15:12Let's go to Bob in the city.
15:14Bob, what's going on?
15:15Thank you for calling.
15:16888-957-9570.
15:18Who wants to talk about the game?
15:19What's up, Bob?
15:21Yeah, first off, let's go Niners!
15:23Let's go.
15:24I have to give them an F.
15:25Whoa.
15:26Yeah, I got to give them an F for Fantastic.
15:28Oh, okay.
15:30Ha, ha, ha.
15:31All right, all right, all right, all right.
15:32Yeah.
15:33Okay, I wanted to ask a question.
15:35You know, I know we got enough receivers, young receivers,
15:38inside the room there, and, you know,
15:39they need to play in order to get better.
15:41That's the reason I feel our defense is so good this year.
15:45But do you think there is a possibility it could get another veteran
15:49for the middle games, like a Keenan Allen?
15:52I mean, that would be kind of insane to have Mike Evans and Keenan Allen
15:56on the same offense.
15:57That would be really kind of cool.
15:58But I don't know.
15:59What do you think?
16:00Here's the thing.
16:01Yeah, Bob, thanks.
16:02Obviously, the wide receiver position, if you haven't heard,
16:04Debo's going to be out multiple weeks.
16:06Right now, I would guess at least until after the bye.
16:09So, Debo's going to miss the next two weeks and the bye, it sounds like.
16:13I get where everyone's coming from, and there is a problem.
16:16Like, they've got to go figure something out as far as just a fifth
16:20healthy receiver for the game next week.
16:22The problem with, first of all, Keenan Allen is on the Colts.
16:25I don't know if they want to trade him.
16:28But the problem is, is how are you going to get someone up to speed
16:31to where you're, like, game ready in one week
16:34and then throw them out there and acquiring, like,
16:38a really good wide receiver?
16:39You're going to have all these other wide receivers coming back.
16:42So, what kind of an investment do you want to make on a wide receiver
16:46knowing that you have at least two or three, four,
16:49maybe even really good ones coming back?
16:51Yeah, the answer is none.
16:52And I'm not saying that, you know, Marvin Harrison Jr.
16:55is worth what they actually paid for him, the Texans.
16:58I mean, it felt a little bit pricey as far as the package of picks,
17:02but you don't want to do that for somebody who is a rental.
17:04No, not at all.
