Willard and Dibs react to the 49ers' epic win over the Seahawks in Seattle to move to 5-0 and explain how they've answered every question we asked of them at the start of the season.
Transcript
00:00They said, talk to me after week five.
00:05They said, nothing matters until they do that.
00:11Until they figure out that nemesis.
00:14Well, how does this change everything for all of us?
00:21Because the 49ers, five weeks in, and this will upset some people, I guess,
00:28because I don't want to talk about Super Bowl either,
00:31but what I do want to say is that I firmly feel there's no test they can't pass.
00:39It doesn't mean they will, but what test do you still want them to pass?
00:45They just passed the biggest test that this league has to offer them.
00:51They just passed it.
00:54We're five weeks in.
00:56Right.
00:57And they've aced the exam.
00:59Exactly.
00:59But it's not the final exam, and it's not even really into the back half of the semester.
01:05You took a test.
01:07It was a big test early, and you passed it, and you aced it.
01:10And so right now, if you look at their grade, and I know you're a teacher,
01:14and you give everybody an A, so it's a little bit of a tough analogy for you.
01:17I mean, that's the plan.
01:18But right now, through five weeks, they have a 100% grade.
01:24They have an A out of an A.
01:26It's an A-plus if you believe in A-pluses.
01:28They can't be any better than 5-0.
01:31Kansas City's 4-0, and you will play them.
01:34Minnesota's 5-0.
01:35I don't think that you play.
01:37Mexico City, Sunday, November 22nd.
01:40That's going to be a fiesta.
01:41Maybe.
01:41Could be a battle of unbeatens.
01:43Could be.
01:44Minnesota might score a touchdown every now and again.
01:46Right.
01:46It might help them out.
01:47But the Niners might not score a touchdown.
01:49And I think to this point about yesterday where, you know, nobody could really drive the ball down the field
01:55ever against anyone.
01:56There were seven turnovers.
01:58And then the Niners needed to do just that.
02:01Drive the ball down.
02:02They had a penalty that was earned, a penalty that was a little fakakta, to use your word.
02:09They had a couple of really long yardage plays, and they picked them up.
02:13And they went down.
02:14They scored.
02:15They converted.
02:15They led by three, and then they kind of held on, and it got tied, and then you scored again,
02:21and you won the game.
02:22So that test yesterday was a very stern one because you needed your defense to stand up so many times,
02:29and they did.
02:30I'm so impressed.
02:32I just, I'm so impressed.
02:34And we're going to get to the Dre Greenlaw thing.
02:36We're going to get to Mike Evans, all of that.
02:40888-957-9570.
02:43It is a victory Monday, and you know how we do this, okay?
02:46It's Willard and Dibs, and we're just wanting to experience this with you all afternoon long.
02:54So now that the 49ers have literally done the thing that we were all worried about, the thing, which is
03:03can you go into Seattle and move the ball?
03:08Now that they've done that, how does this change the outlook of this season for you?
03:14So we'll take your calls, 888-957-9570.
03:18I'll tell you this, Dibs, I literally, I don't know how many plays into the game it was before you
03:24went, oh, this might be different this year.
03:28For me, first play, first play of the game.
03:32Because if you just remember what it felt like at the end of the year to try to go against
03:37Seattle, the Niners, I mean, Brock Purdy couldn't get to the back of his drop.
03:42The running backs couldn't get a yard.
03:45They could not get two yards.
03:47There was no time to do anything.
03:49The wide receivers could not get open.
03:50The quarterback could not get through his drop.
03:52The running back could not get to the line of scrimmage.
03:54You just couldn't move the ball.
03:57So physically overwhelmed.
03:58And the first play from scrimmage was Christian McCaffrey right up the gut for about six, seven, eight yards.
04:05And it's second and three.
04:06And I was like, why?
04:08You didn't do that on first down.
04:10You didn't do that.
04:11The entire month of January, you did not do that against the Seattle Seahawks in two games last year.
04:18So right away, I thought the message was sent that, like, it is, and this is what we were all
04:24holding our breath hoping for, it's going to look different this year.
04:29Even though they would follow that up with incomplete, incomplete, bring on the punter, who we all now love.
04:36George dropped the ball.
04:37Right.
04:38And before that, it was a batted down pass on second and two.
04:41But I do think to your point of, you know, the first snap, it's like, all right, CMC, you got
04:46to the, I think they call it the second level, which against Seattle, we didn't see that last year.
04:50And so that was a definite harbinger.
04:53And for the rest of the game, and even though you wound up punting and they punted and it was
04:58kind of a punt battle and it felt like it was going to be exactly what we thought.
05:02A low scoring, like you punt, we punt battle.
05:05And then it's like, oh, we cough it up and we throw a pick and you cough it up and
05:09we cough it up and back and forth.
05:10And that thing turned into a, an absolute three hour classic.
05:14Heavy weight fight.
05:17It was a heavy weight fight and it was in Seattle and everybody holding up all of their 12s.
05:23And listen, I'm not going to, I know we got into this a little bit too much last week.
05:27I had two friends, in fact, draped in Niner gear who were in the building and I got texts from
05:33them.
05:33They're like, I've never, I've never been at any sort of a sporting event that loud in my entire life.
05:38I've never been in a place that loud.
05:41However, it looked like a solid, at least a third of the building was loud for the 49ers.
05:48That's one aspect of it.
05:49The larger aspect of it for me though, is not that the Seattle fans can create an environment.
05:55It's, hey Niners, what do you do with it?
05:58What do we have?
05:59One false start?
06:00I think.
06:01What?
06:02Like the Niners handled it.
06:04You need to go on a silent count?
06:05Good.
06:06Go on a silent count.
06:08I mean, that's, for me, that is the number one takeaway.
06:11We're going to get into every little piece of this game because it was a classic.
06:15It's a game we're going to remember for our entire lives.
06:18But for me, as a Niner fan, the number one thing coming into this year, there was one test that
06:26they had to pass.
06:27And in ways for a lot of us, I know it wasn't even necessarily win the game.
06:32It was just, can you just go up there and move the ball?
06:35Can you please move the ball and not look physically overwhelmed by the Seattle defense?
06:43Check to the check to the check.
06:45Sure, it's still hard.
06:46I told you Brock was going to throw a pick.
06:48And he did.
06:49And it doesn't even bother me.
06:51Seattle made a great play on the ball.
06:53They fooled him.
06:54They got him.
06:54They're excellent.
06:55They're amazing.
06:56They're fantastic.
06:57The Niners overcame it.
06:59They overcame it.
07:00They overcame a bad call.
07:01They overcame the noise.
07:03They overcame the defense.
07:04They busted 32.
07:06They rushed the passer without Nick Bosa.
07:08We went into the summer with questions.
07:12They've all been answered.
07:14They've all been answered.
07:15I don't know how it's going to go.
07:17But the whole can they, the answer's yes.
07:20They can.
07:21It's yes to every single question.
07:23The answer's yes.
07:24And the way they did it is to me the most impressive part because they did it without really racking
07:30up a lot of offense because it was a short field for you, a short field for them.
07:34And ultimately, it came down for me to the one drive where you had to go down the field and
07:40you had, as you mentioned, adversity.
07:41You had an offensive pass interference, which was Cooks, you know, being a little over eager, you know, blocking before
07:47you should block first and 20.
07:49And normally when you're first to 20, you don't pick that up.
07:51And then you had the grounding, which was a little bit of a curious call that I wish that they
07:57could actually look at and be able to tell them, hey, by the way, it wasn't grounding.
08:01It was a weird chess pass into nowhere.
08:04But the offensive player was close enough to where that shouldn't be grounding.
08:09But no question.
08:10They can't do that.
08:10But they can look at it.
08:12They have replay assist.
08:13They don't look at penalties and reverse penalties.
08:16No, but intentional grounding is the one where they do actually sometimes discuss it before they even throw the flag.
08:22So replay assist, absolutely.
08:24Well, they discuss it, but I don't think that replay assist would weigh in and say, and I could be
08:28wrong.
08:29I'd love to ask an official that question because my perception is that replay assist absolutely can say, especially when
08:38it comes to grounding, receiver in the area, pull that flag up.
08:42Because I saw it multiple times yesterday where flags get thrown and then the refs will come out and say,
08:47you know, per replay assist, no flag on the play.
08:51But it doesn't matter.
08:53It got called.
08:54It was a bad call.
08:56And the Niners brushed it off their shoulder.
08:58And I thought that was the most inspirational play I've seen all year by the 49ers.
