00:00I hope this text from the 559, just so everybody knows, and we say it all the time, we love
00:05the engagement.
00:06We thank you for listening.
00:07If you want to get in touch with us in any way, shape, or form, man, we are all for
00:13it, even if you are, you know, poking at us a little bit.
00:16And I hope that this is tongue-in-cheek.
00:18Hey, Willard, pump the brakes.
00:20I know that I said tap the brakes.
00:24Pump the brakes counts, too.
00:26That's the phrase I'm looking to avoid all week long.
00:29I'm not going to.
00:30So you can say it, but I can promise you I ain't going to.
00:33They're 4-0.
00:34They're awesome.
00:35They've gone through different kinds of challenges, different kinds of teams.
00:39They are coming out as the clear superior team in every way, shape, or form, despite, like all teams are,
00:47dealing with a lot of injuries right now, and I'm not going to pump or tap the brakes.
00:51I'm not predicting a Super Bowl.
00:53I'm just telling you that right now this is the best team in football.
00:56And 559 says pump the brakes.
00:58They have yet to face a complete team like the Jags or Chiefs.
01:02Okay.
01:03Well, they got the Chiefs on the schedule.
01:05They do.
01:06And the Jags, by the way, already played Denver and lost.
01:09So at what point do we sit here and say we're going to not do the schedule thing anymore?
01:17How many different things do you need to do before you go, yeah, but they haven't this, or they haven't
01:24that?
01:26What makes the Chiefs and Jags a complete team?
01:30Who have they defeated?
01:32I know that the Chiefs beat a Raiders team that now we've decided is legitimate, and I'm cool with that.
01:39The Chiefs have also beaten these Broncos, and then the Chiefs have defeated silliness in the league, like Miami, just
01:48like the 49ers have.
01:49How many weeks in have you not actually achieved something until we just go, okay, okay, they're good.
01:57If you want to talk about a 4-0 team where we still have some question marks, that would be
02:02the Minnesota Vikings, not the San Francisco 49ers.
02:05Although Minnesota number one in football and scoring defense.
02:08Their defense is awesome.
02:08Right, and so that can at times be enough, especially, you know, once a week, and that's all it needs.
02:15And, you know, you're going to face a complete team in Seattle, and you could look at the fact that
02:19they're 3-1.
02:20Oh, you lost to Washington.
02:22You can't be that good, but they did turn it over three times in that game.
02:25They didn't get a turnover the other way, so minus three.
02:28Credit to Washington.
02:29They beat Seattle, but beyond that, their defense still looks very good.
02:34Their head coach has kind of had Shanahan's number,
02:36so come Sunday, I think we'll get to see them face a, quote, complete team.
02:41I agree.
02:42We got a lot of time for Seattle.
02:44I still think that they are very good.
02:46I do not think they are as devastating as they were at the end of last year.
02:50Let me give one head scratcher now.
02:52Seattle's personnel department has been given so much credit the last few years, and they deserve it.
02:58But at a certain point, they're going to have to answer for two things.
03:03One, they didn't let Kenneth Walker be in every down back, and two, they let him go.
03:09Whoops and whoops.
03:10And they tried to outsmart and do the same thing the Niners tried to do with Trey Lance,
03:15which is we'll go in the first round and replace the guy who's going to be a high-priced guy.
03:20So instead of paying Kenneth Walker, we're going to use a first-rounder on Jadarian Price out of Notre Dame.
03:26And all he's done so far is fumble and get hurt.
03:29That's it.
03:30That's all Jadarian Price has done, and now he's on IR.
03:33And the Seahawks are looking for running backs.
03:38And I know they've gotten some production there, but anyway, those are subjects.
03:42I can't wait to get to Cosell with that.
03:43No doubt.
03:44That's going to be my Cosell Seattle starter on Wednesday.
03:47And Charbonnet coming back, but probably not this weekend.
03:49Probably not this weekend, yeah.
03:51You might be catching Seattle at the right time, but to your point about tap the brakes or pump the
03:56brakes,
03:56you can say that you need to pump the brakes about you're going to win the Super Bowl.
04:01I don't think that you're actually saying that.
04:02We're just looking at 4-0 and looking at what they've been through the first quarter of the season,
04:07and they are the best team in football.
04:09Brothers and sisters, I'm hitting the gas.
04:11That's what I'm doing.
04:12The Niners are 4-0, and I'm hitting the gas on San Francisco 49er football right now,
04:19on their coach, on their quarterback, on their defensive coordinator, on their game plan,
04:25on the return of Dre and Debo, all of it, all of it.
04:29So far, it is coming up smelling like roses.
04:34Jonathan in the city on Willard and Dibbs.
04:37Hey, Jonathan, thanks for calling.
04:38What's up?
04:40Hey, thanks for taking my phone call.
04:42Happy Victory Monday, man.
04:44They all won.
04:46Valkyries, Sharks, Niners.
04:49But I don't need to pump the brakes, man.
04:51Like I told you on my first call on the first day of the NFL year,
04:57I'm not going to look ahead too much, but I'm feeling really good.
05:04I'm enjoying every win.
05:06I refuse to say they peaked already.
05:09No, they not peaked already.
05:10There's still a lot of improvements to be made, but they're really good, man.
05:16I thought for a while there, you know, here it comes again.
05:20The same Niners, you know, having troubles with a pretty good defense, right?
05:24Especially after that fourth and one or fourth and one and a half that they didn't get.
05:30But after that, it was smooth sailing.
05:33Obviously, a great call on screen pass to Kittle.
05:37I just want to shout out Dre Greenlaw, man.
05:39And Debo, what a homecoming, man.
05:42Just the physicality they bring.
05:44It's with a capital P.
05:47Fred Warner, it's a thing now.
05:50That's a thing.
05:51If you're a ball carrier and Fred 5'4", it's flashing in your peripheral, good luck, man.
05:57He's going to punch the ball out.
06:01Just, you know, Kyle to Brock, Brock to the O-line and that offensive side of the ball.
06:07They're totally in sync, man.
06:10I don't know how they could get better, but like I said, there's a bunch of other improvements that they
06:16need to make.
06:17Let's just keep rolling, man.
06:19Keep rolling the good times.
06:21Go Niners!
06:22Donovan, thank you for the call and for being our so-often lead-off hitter on a victory Monday.
06:28Okay, Greenlaw and Warner, I have so many emotions when you watch them play, and we just start with, ooh,
06:35they're good.
06:35So, like, I start there, but then there's these feels that come in after it because they're back together again.
06:43It's like your favorite band getting back together for a tour, you know, after you haven't seen them for, and
06:51I know it was only one year,
06:52but my gosh, like, that, it fits together so well, and they are so devastating out there watching them roam
07:01the defensive backfield and everything.
07:04I don't know, dude.
07:04It's just a joy.
07:05It's an absolute joy.
07:07We had the Bash Brothers back in the 80s in Oakland.
07:10We have the Splash Brothers.
07:12These guys are the Crash Brothers.
07:13I like it!
07:14Because you'll have Fred get there first and either kind of hold them and punch at the ball, and then
07:19Dre the missile will come in,
07:21or Dre the missile gets there first, and here comes Fred with the tackle and the punch.
07:26Those two are working in concert, and the other part about it, Mark, is you look at the rest of
07:30the guys on defense,
07:31and they all are kind of trying to emulate that sort of full-speed violence to the football.
07:37Did you just come up with that?
07:39I did.
07:40I don't know if it has been created before.
07:42Did you workshop that?
07:44Not really.
07:45Just out of nowhere, you just started talking, and that just came out.
07:48I thought about it while you were talking, which is what I do a lot on this show.
07:51I know.
07:52And I listen.
07:53That's why I give you all of these.
07:54Look what you come up with when I make you sit there for 15 minutes without talking.
07:58I love it, you taking some secondary credit.
08:01This is wonderful.
08:01Yeah, you're welcome.
08:02I just was thinking about the Bash and the Splash, and these two are like a crash.
08:07They constantly, they want to punish you.
08:10They want to dislodge the football.
08:12Trey Greenlaw on the apron.
08:14I'm really happy with you right now.
08:17That was, that was.
08:18Not since draftism you created, have we had such a.
08:21That was really, that was high-level stuff.
08:24Appreciate it.
08:25I hadn't even thought of for years the idea that Bash and Splash rhymed.
08:30Like, I never even thought of that.
08:32Right.
08:32I forgot about the Bash brothers.
08:34That was a long time ago.
08:35And it's because they would do the forearm.
08:37Yeah.
08:37They do the thing.
08:38Yeah.
08:38Yeah.
08:39And even like, you throw in Steinbach and Dave Parker, rest in peace, and Dave Henderson,
08:43rest in peace.
08:44Like, those A's teams, late 80s, it was all about the long ball.
08:48The Bash brothers.
08:49Bash brothers.
08:49Yes.
08:50Splash brothers.
08:52Crash brothers.
08:54Might be something there.
08:55I don't know.
08:56Hey, Niners.
08:57PR.
08:57Marketing.
08:58Chop, chop.
08:59Yep.
09:01Let's get on it.
09:02You could have their heads on the front of a car, like.
09:04Let's get on it.
09:05With some poor Bronco in the middle.
09:07The Niners might be like, could we get Dre on a little bit more than a one-year deal before
09:10we make all the shirts?
09:11Or like, I don't know.
09:14But, well, it's high-level stuff.
09:16Appreciate it.
09:16Yeah.
09:17And yes, like, Dre, like, you don't get to play for anyone else ever again.
09:21And yesterday was just so much fun to watch.
09:23Because we always talk about, oh, pro athletes, you know, they don't hold grudges.
09:27And they're out there just, you know, they're pros.
09:29And it's just another game.
09:31That was not just another game.
09:32Clearly, he made one tackle and almost attacked a coach.
09:36So, Pablo Sandoval, remember what Camilo Duvall said when he came back last week?
09:42Sometimes I think athletes don't realize, and I know Duvall did not leave on his own,
09:47but I don't think athletes fully realize maybe what they've got until it's gone
09:51or how hard it's going to be to go play and live in a different city with different teammates
09:59and a different structure and all of those things.
10:01And so those, that was really on my mind yesterday watching Dre.
10:05He's home.
10:06And, like, I know that there may be a day where he's going to need to put on another uniform
10:10again.
10:10But, yeah, this is home.
10:13I mean, God, I hope all of you went and watched the postgame locker room stuff from the team.
10:17Pretty awesome.
10:18And did you hear, we'll play it for you in a sec, Kyle saying that if he were going to
10:22wear a jersey, it would be Dre's.
10:24I'm like, wow, that's, with all the people in that locker room, not Fred, not George,
10:29not Brock, Dre.
10:31Like, he wants to wear a dress.
10:32That's big stuff.
10:34Yeah, Grandy, what's up?
10:35Oh, we got a super chat on the YouTube from DAdams44.
10:39He writes, the Seahawks are always a tough matchup, but the delta between last season
10:43and this season are non-potent run game for Seattle, Mike Evans, the offices of Warner
10:48and Green Law, as you guys are talking about, and Raheem Morris and the more dynamic defense.
10:53Well, one thing, and again, we've got all week to talk about this, but I would really
10:57like to enforce this idea in everything we watch this year.
11:01Last year was last year, and this year is this year.
11:05And they really, yes, there are certain human beings that overlap, but they couldn't be
11:11more different.
11:13Like, when people go, that was Denver, that was a Super Bowl defense.
11:16No, it's not.
11:17It's a totally new year.
11:20And, I mean, go look at the Texans' defense.
11:23Does that look like last year's defense to you?
11:25No, they've got so many injuries.
11:27Well, but they, like, it's a lot of the same people with the same coach and the same uniform,
11:31and they suck.
11:33I don't know what the hell's going on with them.
11:35You know, the Rams are not who we thought they were.
11:38Win or lose.
11:39It's just not.
11:40It's just not that dominant of a football team.
11:42It may be, in the end.
11:44I know Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald didn't play, but it's not that dominant of a football
11:48team right now.
11:49Well, you could look at any team right now around the league and say, are you what we
11:53thought you were?
11:54And the Rams are a good example.
11:55And Buffalo finds a way to go out there and lose that game, a game that was going back
12:00and forth.
12:01And you've mentioned this a bunch of times since the year started, where Buffalo's defense
12:05is just not good.
12:06So you've got to score 30 to even have a chance to win that game.
12:10And, you know, the Raiders are far better than what we thought they would be.
12:13And now Kansas City's undefeated.
12:15Raiders, Browns, Giants, 3-1.
12:20Excuse me?
12:21Excuse me?
12:21I would say the Giants would be the most plausible of the three.
12:26The Browns, I mean, Browns and Raiders, which one is more surprising?
12:29But would you have said the Giants is the most plausible of the three if I told you that
12:32Jackson Dart only played a game in a series?
12:35Yeah, because I'm not a fan.
12:37I don't think Jackson Dart's.
12:38Oh, well.
12:39I mean, very good.
12:39That's my own opinion.
12:403-1 with Jameis Winston.
12:43I understand that they didn't beat necessarily the Titans and the Cardinals the last two weeks
12:48at home.
12:48Yep.
12:49But still.
12:50Wins or wins.
12:51They are 3-1.
12:52Exactly.
12:52In first place.
12:53And the Raiders one would probably be more surprising just because they beat the Chargers,
12:57if I'm not mistaken.
12:58The Raiders are good.
12:59The Raiders are a viable team.
13:01Right.
13:01Clint Kubiak.
13:02Hello.
13:02We know off of this tree, like, it works.
13:06Look at their offense.
13:07They look incredible.
13:08And Kirk Cousins is thriving in that offense.
13:10He looks great.
13:11Pat in Foster City's next.
13:13Hi, Pat.
13:14What's up?
13:16Hey, guys.
13:17Thanks for taking the call.
13:18I guess, you know, I have a little different take.
13:21You know, it's great that the Niners are winning, and I can't agree with all the things you've
13:26been saying, except that, you know, when you say they're the best team in the NFL today,
13:31to me, that's more a comment on the kind of mediocre teams that we're seeing so far.
13:35I mean, it's early in the season than it is that the Niners are all that, because if you
13:40look at that game yesterday, you know, you saw Denver getting into second and fives, and
13:46you saw the Niners second and eight, and then you saw Denver converting third and twos and
13:51third and ones, and you saw the Niners failing on third and two and fourth and one repeatedly.
13:57It wasn't once in a while.
13:59That was the way the game was.
14:00The biggest play by far was the muff punt, which was, you know, that's one of those
14:05things.
14:06You can't count on one of those things happening more than once every decade.
14:09That was such a close call.
14:10I don't disagree with the call, but it was one of those things.
14:13You can't count on plays like that to win games, and I just don't see how a team that
14:18struggles so much on third and one and fourth and one, and a team that's been beat up so
14:23badly on the receiver end.
14:25I mean, if Evans didn't play that game yesterday, I don't think the Niners win, even with that
14:29muff punt.
14:30I just don't think they had enough receiving core.
14:33Now, to Mark, to your point earlier, they're getting healthy where they need to.
14:36The defensive line, I don't think, didn't do much yesterday, but they're beat up, and
14:41the receivers didn't do much.
14:42They're beat up.
14:43Both those guys, both those outfits are getting better, so I have no doubt that they can improve,
14:49but I just, I don't know.
14:52That punt was really turning things around, because the field position, Denver seemed
14:56to control that pretty strongly, and Purdy just seemed to be off, out of sync with the
15:01receivers for most of that game.
15:03You take away the last Kittle play, which was what, a two-yard pass and a 45-yard run,
15:09you know, you take those yards away from Purdy, and now you're looking at 160 yards passing
15:13offense and not much of a run game.
15:16So, I don't know.
15:18I'm glad they won.
15:19They deserve to win.
15:20Tough defense, but I think they need a little bit more if they're going to really go far
15:24into the playoffs.
15:25That's my take on it.
15:26Yeah, Pat, totally.
15:27Thanks for the call.
15:28I appreciate it.
15:29I disagree a little bit, and here's why.
15:32Like, I don't know if the whole stat thing with Purdy, I don't know why this gets everyone
15:38so much.
15:39I don't know if you've all noticed, it's the only quarterback in football that if he correctly
15:43throws a screen pass and it goes, well, that is considered a demerit.
15:47Well, he only threw it two yards.
15:49Yeah, you dummy.
15:50You only threw it short.
15:52Every single year we do this, he throws the ball downfield more than any quarterback in
15:58football, and if you don't believe me, go find the metrics.
16:01Josh Allen throws it among the shortest of any quarterback in football.
16:06If you don't believe me, go look it up.
16:10But for some reason, this is how we do it, and so we want to rob him of those stats
16:15because
16:16it was a wonderful play call by a play caller and therefore executed really well by everyone
16:22on the football field and turned into a wonderful game-closing touchdown.
16:26That counts.
16:28You get that.
16:30Was, you know, Brock in the first half and the entire offense, like, yeah, it wasn't their
16:35best stuff, and Denver gets some credit for that.
16:38I'm certainly not going to take away your point, Pat, that the special teams play was
16:43the biggest play of the game, but I'm not going to say that the 49ers struggle on third
16:49down.
16:50For the last season, plus four games, they're the best third down team in football, and
16:55it's not close.
16:56Yesterday, they were six for 15.
16:58That's bad for them, but not hellacious.
17:01It's a little bit less than what you'd want it to be, but that was the character of that
17:06football game.
17:07I think you had two physical defenses that really gave the offenses a hard time for about
17:14two and a half quarters until the floodgates opened up a little bit, and then the game
17:20went where it went.
17:21But when I see a football team take on different challenges, games with different personalities,
17:27and continue to come out with more points than the other team, that's when I get really,
17:32really excited, as opposed to what I see some people do, which is look around the league
17:37and try to find what the 49ers haven't done.
17:41I'm much more focused on what they have done, which is answer so far every single question
17:46that's been thrown out.
17:47And the answers yesterday were a little bit tougher than they've been most of the year,
17:51which is why I thought that was their best win of the season.
17:54And even when you go to their second drive and you've got fourth end, a long one, almost
17:59two at the Denver 34, well, that's a 52-yard field goal for Pinheiro that would tie the
18:05game, but he wanted to sneak it up in there.
18:06And he spoke after the game and said, yeah, they thought that they could get the yard and
18:11a half, and Purdy wasn't even close.
18:13And so it's a turnover on downs, but then the defense comes out, and it's a three and out
18:17for Denver.
18:18So you get the ball back, and even though you punted and then they punted, it was a back
18:23and forth kind of thing, I think the defense kept them in a spot where the offense could
18:28kind of slowly develop the run.
18:30And by the second half, I think they had softened up Denver to where the ground attack was actually
18:35starting to work in that fourth quarter because the defense had given them a spot to where
18:39they could keep the ball.
18:40Also, you know, I give Denver credit.
18:42He says like they were converting on third and short, maybe better than the Niners were
18:47for a little while.
18:48That is what Bo Nix does well, and quite frankly, it's kind of the only thing that he does well.
18:54We talked about this before the game.
18:56He's good off script.
18:57He's not good on.
18:58So do you notice that Bo Nix, once again, Denver goes into halftime with next to zero on
19:06the scoreboard?
19:07Because Sean Payton has a script, and you watch Bo.
19:10He can't, like they don't, they don't really bring anything to the table that's dynamic downfield,
19:16and then they get late in a game and usually get down, and then he's really good scrambling
19:21around, and his athleticism takes over, and they're able to do some things.
19:25But by then, you're kind of in a tough spot, and only if the other team doesn't execute
19:31well down the stretch will you win the football game, which if you look at their games this
19:35year, that's exactly what's happened.
19:37Matt Stafford made a bad throw leading the game last week.
19:41Hofunga picks it off, takes it to the house.
19:43Once Denver is able to turn that into a victory, this time the 49er offense, with the lead
19:48down the stretch, executed, they win.
19:50That's like, I don't know.
19:51This is a good thing to me.
19:53That's a good thing.
19:53I know yesterday was not as aesthetically pleasing, but that is a green check that the
20:00Niners needed, which is to win football games like that.
20:03You have to be able to win in five or six different ways.
20:06Like last year, you think about their win over Chicago, which was an out-and-out, flat-out
20:12shootout.
20:13That game was touchdowns back and forth.
20:15They were flying all around the building.
20:16You have to be able to win in a variety of different fashions.
20:19And I thought that yesterday, Denver's defense was really up to the test.
20:23The muffed punt, the fumble on the punt, rather, that gave the Niners their first short
20:28field.
20:29That was the difference.
20:30And even beyond that, Denver gave up two more touchdowns, but some of those were just,
20:34I think, the fact that the time of possession in the second half swung the Niners way, and
20:39the defense was more rested.
