Why do modern Windows installations commonly use GPT instead of MBR? The answer is closely connected to UEFI—and Windows 11 adds important firmware requirements.


Modern Windows installations generally use GPT when the computer is configured for UEFI.

For Windows 11, Microsoft requires a compatible system with UEFI firmware and Secure Boot capability as part of its system requirements. A typical Windows 11 installation therefore uses:

UEFI + GPT

Older Windows installations may still use:

Legacy BIOS + MBR

If you're upgrading an older computer or moving from an MBR-based installation to a modern UEFI configuration, you may need to change the firmware boot configuration and, depending on the setup, convert the system disk from MBR to GPT.
