Is MBR still useful today? Yes! MBR can still make sense when you're working with older computers that rely on Legacy BIOS or require compatibility with older systems.

When should you use MBR (Master Boot Record) instead of GPT?

MBR can still be relevant for:

Older computers using Legacy BIOS
Systems that don't support UEFI booting
Older operating systems or software requiring MBR
Compatibility with legacy hardware and environments

For modern computers using UEFI, GPT is generally the standard partitioning scheme.

Legacy BIOS → MBR
UEFI → GPT

Understanding compatibility is important before choosing or converting a disk partitioning scheme.

00:00So, when would MBR still make sense?
00:02MBR can be relevant when working with older computers that use legacy BIOS firmware.
00:07It can also be useful when compatibility with older systems or software acquires an MBR-formatted disk.
00:13For example, an old computer may not support UEFI booting.
00:18In that situation, GPT may not be suitable for booting that particular system.
00:23For modern hardware, however, GPT is generally the more appropriate partitioning scheme
00:29when using UEFI.
