00:00The French government says it will impose new curfews wherever needed, Prime Minister
00:05Sébastien Léconou has said, adding that the measures introduced in several cities
00:09on Monday night had helped keep things calmer after days of protests, which at times turned
00:16violent.
00:17In Paris, the curfew applied to Place de la République and the Les Hailles neighborhood
00:22from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
00:24Restrictions were also in place in Lyon, Nice and certain areas of cities in northern
00:30France, including Lille and Douai.
00:34Léconou said he had asked prefects on Monday to implement these localised curfews following
00:40the urban unrest that occurred over the weekend.
00:43High school students kicked off a series of protests in Paris last month that went nationwide,
00:49demanding a revamp of the education system and an increase in funding in schools.
00:54The demonstrations have since morphed into wider protests over rising fuel prices and
01:01a spiralling cost-of-living crisis.
01:04Some groups have hijacked the protests, leading to some of the country's worst rioting and
01:09looting in recent years.
01:11According to the government, more than 3,000 businesses have been vandalised.
01:16Meanwhile, several people were sentenced to prison terms following the first summary trials on
01:21Monday.
