00:11In Brazil many people took to the streets of Porto Alegre to welcome
00:16President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva who led a massive march through the city's historic downtown.
00:26At least 3,000 families were affected by flooding in various towns in Paraguay caused by heavy
00:32rainfall and the rising waters of the Paraná River.
00:40With vote counting still underway, residents in Alberta have overwhelmingly rejected the
00:46proposal to begin the process of separation from Canada.
01:02Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:06We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:23Many people took to the streets of Porto Alegre to welcome President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva
01:29who led a massive march through the city's historic downtown.
01:32The march, part of the campaign leading up to the October 25th election runoff, demonstrated
01:38popular support for the Workers' Party candidate in one of the key regions of the south of the
01:43country.
01:44President Lula da Silva walked through the streets accompanied by local leaders and thousands
01:49of supporters who shunted slogans in support of his re-election and the social policies
01:54promoted by his government.
01:55The rally reflects the atmosphere of mobilisation and enthusiasm among progressive activists who
02:02seek to secure victory in the runoff election against the far-right candidate Flávio Bolsonaro.
02:15We stay on topic with Brazil's presidential runoff Just Days Away, a football match organized
02:19by musician Chico Buarque and social movements brought together progressive activists and
02:24evangelical pastors to challenge the idea that faith and the far-right go hand in hand.
02:33It's game day, but not just any game.
02:36Brazilian singer and songwriter Chico Buarque has organized the match together with social
02:41movements as a demonstration of support for President Lula's re-election.
02:45And the guest team were evangelical pastors.
02:51Evangelicals cannot be divided in this or that position.
02:55Many evangelicals are progressive, so much so that they come here and will lose to us
03:00in football.
03:01And we are happy to defeat them in football and support them in our fight against fascism.
03:09As many of the cultural events of the previous days, the goal is to communicate through laughter
03:14and joy, even amidst the challenging times.
03:18We realized, our society realized, that it would not be possible to turn this election
03:23only by the negative key of resistance.
03:25This key is also important, denouncing what Bolsonarism means.
03:29But it is also important to produce meetings, to produce joy.
03:33As one side and the other counted goals, the game offered an opportunity to show different
03:38representations of Brazilian religious communities, far from simplifications and misconceptions.
03:44An evangelical woman is a woman.
03:46She is hardworking.
03:47She is black.
03:48She lives in the outskirts.
03:49She is evangelical.
03:51And all these elements are mixed up in the voting choices.
03:53So what we have seen here is that it is not decisive.
03:56It is not decisive.
03:58As many times the progressive field itself indicates that the pastor goes there and people flock and
04:03vote.
04:04It doesn't work like that.
04:05For these religious leaders, the common idea that portrays all evangelicals as far right
04:11is a preconception that hinders true understanding.
04:14The Bible says to us that we are imitators of Jesus.
04:18In other words, who imitates, who imitates the black boy of Nazareth cannot under no circumstances
04:25agree and corroborate with violence, with hatred, with division, with exclusion.
04:31They cannot in any way corroborate with genocide, with torture, with dictatorship.
04:37It takes days until President Lula da Silva faces far-right Flavio Bolsonaro in the Brazilian
04:43runoff, with religion being among the decisive factors that many are closely looking at.
04:49Francisco Samudio, Belen de los Santos, Fertelasu English from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
04:57Also, Brazil's Superior Electoral Court ordered US tech giant Meta to clarify the restrictions
05:04imposed on the campaign of President and re-election candidate Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva across
05:09its platforms.
05:11The electoral body gave the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp 48 hours to
05:17clarify the algorithmic selectivity of its platforms against campaign posts by the Brazilian
05:23leader.
05:23It demanded that Meta report whether there are restrictions on Lula's profile for content
05:30dissemination, exclusion from recommendations and geographic blocking.
05:35The body also ordered the tech company to report whether it took measures to investigate
05:40the appearance of 255 AI generated fake profiles that prompted attacks against the head of state.
05:57And amid the drought and public health crisis caused by fires in the Amazon, Brazilian presidential
06:04candidate Flavio Bolsonaro promised in the Amazonian state of Pará to end the environmental
06:09policies that, according to him, exist for ideological reasons.
06:14Senators' statements contrast with the data.
06:17During hiatus Bolsonaro's administration, 45,586 square kilometers of the Amazon were destroyed.
06:25However, under Lula da Silva's administration, deforestation declined significantly and is expected
06:32to reach its lowest level in a decade by 2026.
06:35In this context, environmental organizations and social movements have denounced Flavio Bolsonaro's
06:40promises, warning these proposals would cause irreversible environmental damage to Brazil.
06:55Venezuela's acting president, Delci Rodriguez, announced that the process to nominate Venezuela
07:00as the host of the 2030 Central American and Caribbean Games with Caracas as the host city
07:06has been completed.
07:07In this context, the statements were made during a meeting at the Miraflores Palace with the president
07:12of Centro Caribe Sports, Luis Mejia Oviedo.
07:16Also present at the meeting were the major of the Libertador Municipality, Carmen Meléndez,
07:22and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Félix Plasencia, among other members of the Centro Caribe Sports
07:28Board of Directors.
07:30Furthermore, acting president, Delci Rodriguez, expressed her confidence that Caracas will be
07:35the host city and emphasized that these games will allow Venezuela to showcase its resilience
07:41and brilliance to the world, as well as to embrace its sister countries in the region.
07:52And now we have a short break coming up.

08:23Welcome back to From the South.
08:25Cuban diplomats at the United Nations condemn an anti-Cuba event organized by the US, which
08:32include guests linked to terrorism against the island.
08:35At the entrance to the meeting room, Cuban diplomats denounced that the event's purpose
08:40is to promote a hostile and interventionist narrative against Cuba.
08:44They also warned about the US pressures ahead of the annual General Assembly vote against the blockade.
08:50In this scenario, Cuba's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ernesto Soberon, denounced the event as a manoeuvre
08:57that used the United Nations facilities to advance the US government's political agenda against the sovereign nation
09:03and also to divert attention from the devastating humanitarian impact of the blockade and energy siege on the Cuban people.
09:16In the conference room 6, the United States mission is holding a shame event against Cuba in full contravention of
09:27the rules that govern the use of UN premises.
09:30It is a clandestine gathering, absolutely alien to the UN agenda.
09:38Unfortunately, the UN Secretariat has not prevented this from happening despite our repeated warnings.
09:47High to themselves, the US has organized a gathering of representatives of small, selective, and discriminatory group of member states
09:57to spread the lights about Cuba.
10:14At least 3,000 families were affected by flooding in various towns in Paraguay caused by heavy rainfall and the
10:22rising waters of the Paraná River.
10:24According to the National Emergency Secretariat, nine of the country's 17 departments have been affected,
10:31leading to the deployment of operations to distribute food, tents, and building materials.
10:37In the municipality of Iolas, one of the hardest hit areas, approximately 1,000 families have received assistance,
10:44while rescue operations have also helped hundreds of animals.
10:47Although the river level has dropped in some areas, weather authorities are warning of the possibility of more rain over
10:55the next few days,
10:56which could exacerbate the situation in the affected regions.
11:08Also, Spanish rescue and emergency crews rushed to rescue residents trapped by devastating floods in Oliva in Valencia on Monday.
11:16Flooded neighborhoods, partially submerged cars and residents wading through water-locked streets were the scenes left behind by Storm Adam.
11:27While rescue teams evacuated people off the town Oliva, the place was battered by more than 600 mm of rain
11:34over two days,
11:36while neighbouring areas recorded over 700 mm, leaving roads impassable and forcing the evacuation of around 2,000 people from
11:45several coastal campsites.
11:47The disaster has revived painful memories of the catastrophic Dana floods of October 2024,
11:53which killed 230 people across the Valencian community.
12:03In this context, more than 1,000 rescues have been carried out throughout the region,
12:09and emergency teams have deployed helicopters and boats to reach isolated residents.
12:15On Monday, rescue teams rushed to evacuate residents trapped by the devastating floods in the province of Valencia,
12:21following torrential rains that submerged entire neighborhoods and left communities cut off.
12:26Rescuers descended from helicopters, waded through flooded properties and hoisted a trapped resident to safety.
12:38We had a few tense moments. Some people arrived who were in really bad shape.
12:44An elderly couple who were on the verge of falling, and we managed to grab them and help them up.
12:52Their home was flooded. The water reached their wastes. And now, they don't have anything. But, well, everyone here is
13:03pitching in.
13:06Also, Portuguese police forcibly dismantled protest encampments in Lisbon and Porto, set up to denounce the nation's severe housing crisis
13:15and soaring rental costs.
13:17Security forces in the capital forcibly removed tents and arrested several housing rights activists,
13:23with participants reporting police aggression during the clearing operation while demonstrators in Porto dissembled their campsite under police orders.
13:34Portuguese authorities justified the eviction, citing lack of municipal permits for public square occupations.
13:40Activists denounce that street mobilizations will process the reiterating demands for increased public housing stocks, rent caps and an immediate
13:50end to evictions executed with alternative housing guarantees.
14:01In this context, Portuguese protesters voiced their discontent as demands for affordable housing continue to grow.
14:12In Lisbon, the cost of housing is ridiculously high. We young people have our whole lives ahead of us.
14:20We're studying, we're qualified and educated, yet we often have no choice but to share flats with four, five or
14:28six other people.
14:31And there are even more precarious situations, such as immigrants working here who are forced to live with up to
14:3720 people in a single room.
14:39It's completely inhumane treatment and an affront to our dignity.
14:48I find it very sad what is happening in France, Albania, parts of Luxembourg and Spain as well as in
14:55Porto, where there have also been fires.
14:58But I do not condemn these events, because they are the reaction of people who are outraged and tired of
15:04waiting for politicians, who are supposed to represent them in a democracy, to give them the chance to make their
15:10voices heard.
15:12That is why this sort of disaster happened.
15:18And now we have a short break coming up before we want to invite you to visit our Facebook page

15:51Welcome back to From the South.
15:52According to projections by the Canadian Public Broadcaster CBC, voters in Alberta have overwhelmingly rejected the proposal to begin the
16:01process of separating from Canada.
16:03With more than one million votes counted, more than 76% support the province to remain part of the North
16:12American country.
16:13The result marks a setback for separatist groups in the oil rich province, where the campaign was driven largely by
16:20economic grievances and dissatisfaction with federal policies.
16:25Alberta's vote is the first referendum on separation held outside Quebec, which has twice voted on independence.
16:33The outcome was hailed by Prime Minister Mark Carney as a clear choice on the part of Albertans.
16:39The Prime Minister has often called for Canada to present a united front in the face of external pressures, including
16:46an ongoing trade war with the United States.
16:55The US government has banned federal civil agencies from using the Chinese artificial intelligence platform DeepSeq, alleging it represents a
17:04potential threat to national security.
17:06The measure by the Homeland Security Department orders the removal of DeepSeq-related technology from federal civilian agency IT systems,
17:15including third-party products and services built using its AI models.
17:20According to the White House, the use of the technology could produce actionable intelligence on US persons and government agencies
17:28and may result in the transfer of sensitive data to the Chinese government.
17:33The decision joins other restrictions imposed since 2025 and reflects the growing technological rivalry between Washington and Beijing over the
17:42development of artificial intelligence.
17:53More than 4,600 people have died from the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while the
17:59number of confirmed cases has risen to 9,552.
18:04On Tuesday, the National Institute of Public Health informed that in the last 24 hours, 97 new cases were reported,
18:12along with 41 deaths and 20 people recovered, recording at least 4,602 deaths since the outbreak began.
18:22On May 17, the World Health Organization classified the Ebola outbreak in the DRC and neighbouring Uganda as a public
18:31health emergency of international concern.
18:34On August 18, the World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the current epidemic caused by the
18:43Bundin-Bunga Ebola virus in the DRC is spreading at an unprecedented rate faster than any previous outbreak and is
18:52the second-largest epidemic in terms of case numbers since records began.
19:06And thousands of Japanese people gathered in front of the parliament in Tokyo to protest the military build-up and
19:12constitutional reform promoted by Sanaita Kaishi's government.
19:16The government is accelerating military spending, easing restrictions on lethal weapons exports, planning to deploy medium- and long-range
19:26missiles, and intends to review its three security documents and the constitution before the end of the year.
19:32Democratic Party leader Misuho Fukushima called for a halt to the discussion of constitutional amendments in the House of Representatives
19:41and denounced the government for seeking to smooth the way for the reform by reducing proportional representation seats.
19:49She also linked the joint Japan-US military exercises to the escalation of militarization.
19:55For the Communist Party, Takuja Masoe warned that missile deployments and the arms race do not bring peace and caution
20:03against the dangerous, large-scale resurgence of militarism.
20:13After all, instead of spending money on that kind of military force, I would like us to focus first on
20:19diplomacy, to do our very best in that area,
20:21and to establish friendly relations with the countries of Asia.
20:25Conscientious people have long been saying that we must not forget our glorious history, so I believe that is extremely
20:33important.
20:35Also, Japan has launched a spacecraft on a mission to collect samples from Phobos, the largest of Mars to moons,
20:43in an effort to shed light on the origins of the solar system and the emergence of life on Earth.
20:48The On-Crewed Martian moons exploration mission lifted off aboard Japan's H-3 rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center on
20:58Tuesday.
20:59The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAKHA, confirmed a successful separation with the spacecraft heading toward the Martian region.
21:08The mission aims to reach Phobos in August, land on its surface, and collect at least 10 grams of material
21:15before returning to Earth.
21:17Scientists also plan to study Deimos, Mars' smaller moon.
21:22Meanwhile, the mission will assess whether Phobos could serve as a natural space station for future crewed missions to Mars.
21:30The effort builds on Japan's previous success in returning asteroid samples to Earth in 2020.
21:44Today, MMX took its first step toward carrying out an exploration mission in the Martian system.
21:50Thus began a long journey of about five years leading up to 2031 on Earth when humanity will, for the
21:58first time, bring back samples from the Martian system.
22:04We will work with the utmost dedication, in close cooperation with stakeholders in Japan and abroad, to ensure the steady
22:12operation of MMX, to obtain new findings that will advance planetary science,
22:17and to acquire exploration technologies that will serve as a foundation for future exploration activities.
