00:51Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:56We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:12In Italy, the FAO World Food Forum kicked off with the presentation of awards to youth programs
01:19in recognition of their contributions in the various regions where the
01:23organization operates. The FAO Global Youth Forum will provide a
01:29dedicated space for dialogue and exchange between young professionals,
01:33policymakers, technical experts and senior leaders through interactive
01:39discussions and knowledge sharing participants. Also will explore how youth
01:46can contribute to advancing the One Health agenda, strengthen partnerships
01:50across sectors and generations, and identify opportunities for meaningful
01:54engagement in policy and implementation processes. As part of the opening
01:59ceremony of the fifth edition of the FAO World Food Forum, the FAO Director
02:04General Koo Dongyi urge members states to strengthen youth participation.
02:14We must have high ambitions. I call on all governments and partners to work with
02:20young people with sustained commitment. Global action begins at the local level.
02:25Transformation cannot take place solely in Rome. It must take shape in countries, in
02:30communities, in schools, at universities, in exports, on pastures, in laboratories, in
02:37companies, in international forums, and also in the institutions where decisions are
02:42made or where consultations are conducted. Consultations are not just about
02:46decision-making. They are also important. We must involve young people in the
02:51consultation phase.
02:54And Angola will officially submit its candidacy for the position of Director General of the Food and
03:00Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, during the World Food Forum. The candidacy has
03:07the support of the African Union and will be presented by Angola's Minister of Foreign Affairs,
03:13Tete Antonio, to representatives of member countries. President Joao Laurenzo is attending
03:19the meeting and is scheduled to speak on the opening day. His visit also aims to promote international
03:25cooperation and attract investment in agriculture. The Angolan Government considers this sector key to
03:33diversifying the economy and strengthening food security, as well as highlighting Africa's potential
03:39to contribute to the global food supply.
03:48also Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, is in the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, to
03:54participate in the 2026 edition of the organization's World Food Forum. Rodriguez arrived in the European
04:00country on Sunday, emphasizing her government's commitment to food as an essential human right. In her
04:07statements at the airport, the leader also emphasized that agricultural production must be carried
04:13out with respect for nature and noted that Venezuela seeks to consolidate significant progress toward
04:19eradicating hunger. Through October 16th, more than 190 countries will participate in various debates
04:27focused on combating malnutrition and developing strategies to optimize food production and mitigate
04:33the effects of climate change.
04:59Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, presented a review of the first 100
05:05days of the Venezuela Rises Plan. Highlights include the rehabilitation and delivery of housing
05:12to those most affected, the implementation of health care plans and damage repairs,
05:17as well as comprehensive care for those affected by the earthquakes.
05:21Furthermore, the acting president affirmed that those still in a camp will soon have a home,
05:26as the national government is working to respond to the families hoping to regain their homes.
05:31Rodriguez reaffirmed the Bolivarian government's commitment to the country's recovery and to the
05:37welfare of the Venezuelan people, emphasizing that Venezuela is being reborn through the unity of all sectors.
05:52In the area of housing, we have renovated and delivered 2,000 422 homes in Caracas,
05:59with a special focus on the Libertador and Chaca municipalities, as well as the states of La Guayra,
06:06as well as the city of La Guayra, as well as the city of La Guayra, benefiting 8,862 people.
06:13We have also delivered 700 new homes in six states across the country, and in La Guayra,
06:20686 homes were restored, benefiting 3038 people. We also continue to restore 20,083 homes,
06:29which will benefit a total of 82,205 people in 13 states across the country.
06:38Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, also announced that 461 loans have been granted to
06:44condominiums, benefiting 16,172 families in the reconstruction of their properties and homes following
06:52the double earthquake. We have issued 461 loans to condominiums, benefiting 16,172 families to help
07:03them restore their living spaces, and the plan for 3,000 temporary single-family homes in Ciudad
07:11South Caribea is underway, with 27% completion and a total goal of 6,000 single-family homes.
07:40In this new episode of our segment, Venezuela on the Move will learn about the Nha Placida commune,
07:47which, with a spirit of struggle, love and commitment to the country, has launched various
07:52initiatives aimed at promoting the local economy and building social well-being. Let's take a look.
07:59In central Venezuela, in Miranda State, in the Tuy Valleys region, there is the town of Cuba,
08:06founded in 1690 and popularly known as La Perla del Tuy. This town, with a population of over 170,000,
08:13stands out for two important reasons. Its historic downtown, the birthplace of the national hero,
08:19Ezequiel Zamora, and its people, productive men and women.
08:28Cuba is more than rural streets. The lands are home to the women of Niña Placida commune,
08:35an example of strength and communal organization. Together, they have fought for their commune for more
08:40than a decade, and every initiative has taken root within the walls of their self-government hall.
08:49The commune is my home. The commune members are my brothers. The women of the commune,
08:55who are my contemporaries, are my sisters. I have my grandchildren in the commune. So for me,
09:01the commune is a home. A home where equals gather. And among equals, we are better able to understand one
09:07another. And if we face any difficulties, we are also able to overcome them, but together as a family.
09:14So from the bottom of my heart, I love my commune. And I love my fellow commune members, because about
09:2080 percent are women. And most of the self-government bodies are made up of women. My 20 male fellow
09:28commune
09:29members are also my brothers. And they too have a sense of belonging and commitment, just like a woman.
09:35And they defend women with all their might. So what can I say? My commune is my home. My commune
09:43is my family. And my fellow commune members are my family.
09:50Amid the pandemic, a project was born, solid waste collection to provide residents with a clean and
09:57healthy living environment. And months later, it became a circular economy.
10:11We have built a social enterprise that was originally established as a social waste plan.
10:17The program continues to collect 16 metric tons of waste on a self-managed basis across those 16 communal
10:26councils. And has now succeeded through training and organization in establishing an enterprise with
10:31the support of Caricuo Caribe, who were our main trainers.
10:38Our main objective as a commune is to create a process of transformation with our Mother Earth,
10:44to create a process of transformation starting with a citizen, centered on nature and our territory.
10:53As the primary environment that gives us life and provides us with all the essential resources we
10:59need to develop as a people and as a nation.
11:07The labor force is female. It is women who collect the waste in their commune to bring it to the
11:12collection center. And as the scooter passes by, the journey begins until it reaches the classification center.
11:26They arrive at this green landscape with enthusiasm and get to work and recycle what was once trash.
11:33We sorted it into eight groups. Each group is made up of one type of material. For example, we have
11:39the
11:39PPP, which we call the PPP, which is the plastic from chairs, the plastic from laundry
11:47baskets, the plastic from kitchen utensils. And we also have blow molded plastic, which is the plastic used for
11:56shampoo bottles, bleach bottles, and paint cans. We also have a separate category for a material that
12:03can't be mixed with the others, which includes the plastic from butter containers, Chinese rice containers,
12:11the plastic from refrigerators, washing machines, and all of this. We carry out this entire process
12:19here with representatives from the commune, the ones who started this project. Once we had it weighted by
12:27the communal council to determine how much each communal council has contributed, we can provide
12:33them with what they need, a wet trimmer for their dance group, lighting for whatever they need, and
12:39can afford with the amount of materials they have given us.
12:44Love for his country, the environment, and his Venezuelan fellow citizens has been the pillar that
12:49has sustained his work. Love is the first legacy left to us by our commander, Hugo Rafael Chavez
12:55Frias, which is being carried on by our president, Nicolas Maduro, and now by our acting president,
13:01Delcy Rodríguez. That is what socialism is all about, unity, equality, and social justice,
13:07because if there is no justice, there is no peace. So that is what we want in the commune,
13:12Nya Placida, in general, 21st century socialism. With more than 60 metric tons of recycled waste per
13:19month, they contribute to the economic diversification of Miranda State, which is emerging through its
13:24agricultural, agro-industrial manufacturing and exports sector. And from Venezuela we go to Mexico,
13:32where thousands of people took to the streets this Sunday in Guadalajara in western Mexico to demand
13:38that Pablo Lemo's regional government find an urgent solution to the crisis caused by the supply of
13:43yellowish water. The protest which set out from the Glorieta de la Minerva toward the official
13:51residents of Casa Jalisco began as a peaceful demonstration to denounce a problem that has
13:57persisted for months. Tensions escalated when a group of protesters approached the metal security
14:02fences, prompting the deployment of a police unit. Security forces responded with tear gas and high
14:08pressure water canyons to suppress the crowd, leading to moments of confrontation that affected
14:14several people, including children and elderly adults.
14:24In other topics, hundreds of thousands of Brazilians flooded the streets nationwide to reject the far
14:30right candidacy of Flavio Bolsonaro and rally behind working class candidate Luis Inácio Lula da Silva.
14:36Backed by trade unions, students and low-income working families, Lula's campaign stands in sharp
14:44contrast to Bolsonaro's backing by U.S. interests, tech oligarchs and transnational mining corporations.
14:51Mobilization seems to receive a surge beyond previous turnouts, driving by growing urgency ahead
14:56of the second round vote that will decide Brazil's natural resources, public health funding
15:02and sovereign foreign policy. With just two weeks until the decisive runoff,
15:08popular forces across Brazil continue building massive momentum in defense of democracy, social
15:15rights and national sovereignty.
15:25And in the United States, a community in Europe, Pennsylvania is mourning after a mass shooting
15:30left eight people dead, including two young children and a pregnant woman.
15:34Mourners gather outside the home where a 45-year-old gunman killed seven family members and a friend
15:41before taking his own life. The victims included a five-year-old boy and a pregnant mother alongside
15:48her one-year-old daughter. The tragedy, coupled with another shooting in Philadelphia, once again exposes
15:55the deep-seated crisis of domestic gun violence and social fragmentation across working-class communities
16:01in the U.S.
16:10And citizens gathered at a rally held by presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the political
16:16party La France Insoumise in a show of force by the French left. The event, held amid growing social and
16:23student mobilization against the Macron government's policies, served to reaffirm the unity of the
16:29progressive bloc and its agenda for social transformation. Mélenchon called for popular
16:35mobilization in the face of cuts to education and public services, denouncing the disproportionate use
16:41of force against students. The rally reflected growing support for the proposals of the French left,
16:48which seeks to capitalize on social discontent ahead of future elections.
16:58The presidential election will not be a contest between technocrats who come to argue about taxes
17:05and statistics. It will be a contest of world views. We are going to found the sixth republic,
17:13the republic of popular power, with citizen referendums and recall referendums to drive out
17:19those we no longer want. We will move forward with the flag and music at the forefront, to the frontier,
17:27to the frontiers of human life, that is, at sea, in space, in the digital realm, and in our understanding
17:34of what health is. Let's begin to create the ecological state through eco-regions. Let's found a new social
17:41state with comprehensive social security. And, above all, we will establish a society of mutual aid,
17:48one in which we help one another at all times, whether among family, among friends, among neighbors,
17:54or among people who wish to dedicate themselves to the common good. Above all, we will ensure the triumph
18:01of the new France, the France of all our children, without exception, regardless of their ancestry,
18:07religion, or skin color. Long live France. One and indivisible. Long live the republic. Long live
18:14universal humanity.

18:35We'll be right back, so don't get away.
18:47Welcome back to From the South. Nearly 1.92 million children in Somalia are suffering from or are expected
18:55to suffer from acute malnutrition and will need treatment by June 2027, according to the Integrated Food
19:02Security Phase Classification. Of that number, around 433,000 children are projected to face
19:09severe acute malnutrition, the form associated with the highest risk of death. The crisis is particularly
19:16acute in southern Somalia, where food insecurity, disease outbreaks, and limited access to healthcare,
19:23clean water, and sanitation are putting children at great risks. Meanwhile,
19:28humanitarian organizations are struggling with funding shortages, also leaving many displaced families
19:35without assistance. Furthermore, expected El Niño-related flooding could further displace
19:40families and restrict access to essential services as needs continue to grow and humanitarian resources decline.
19:54The current situation of the IDBs in Jumbalan is very dire because due to lack of funding to the humanitarian
20:07act is operating in Jumbalan. Here we have over 25,000 IDB households. There is no assistance
20:17to receive since 2023. You can imagine the situation the people are living in.
20:28We are building all the humanitarian actors and UN agencies. Particularly, we had one critical partner,
20:39UNHCR. UNHCR has closed its office here in Kishmayo as a result of budget cut by USAID.
20:48UNHCR has closed its office. So, our activities majorly was dependent on UNHCR assistance.
20:57We still have children who are dying because of malnutrition, because of a lot of issues like disease
21:07of measles. We need to do more for them and that's why we are here today. We need to see
21:15how we can work
21:16with the community health workers, how we can work with local authority and leaders, how we can work with
21:22the government and all the partners who are here to support the authority to be more efficient
21:28and we can't put together for the best interest of the child.
21:45In a ball on Sunday, violent flash floods swept through the Gorka district, destroying
21:50homes and causing widespread destruction along the Budi Gandaki River.
21:55Authorities said the disaster was caused by a landslide between Gorka and Shumling in the
22:02rural municipality of Shumnubri, which temporarily blocked the river, causing a torrent of water,
22:08mud and a breeze.
22:10The Nepalese Army reported that it had rescued 49 people from the flood-affected areas, while
22:16five people remained missing.
22:18Search and rescue operations are continuing in coordination with law enforcement agencies
22:23and local authorities.
22:32In other topics, the 2026 annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World
22:37Bank Group have officially opened in Bangkok, Thailand, bringing together more than 15,000
22:42participants from 191 countries and regions.
22:46Running through Sunday at the Queen's City Kit National Convention Centre, the meetings
22:52will focus on global economic coordination, development, financing and international cooperation.
22:58Discussions will also address the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, the challenges
23:04facing financial markets and ways to mobilise private capital for investment and infrastructure
23:10development.
23:11Meanwhile, policymakers and economic officials are expected to examine how emerging technologies
23:17and new investment opportunities could contribute to economic growth and job creation.
23:22For Thailand, hosting the annual meeting is also an opportunity to strengthen its international
23:28profile and position itself as a regional economic hub and a destination for major global conferences.
23:42People in Vadodara in Western India gather on Sunday to celebrate Navatri, one of the Hinduism's
23:53major religious festivals with traditional dances and devotional rituals at the Lakshmi Villas Palace.
23:59The festival, whose name means Night-Night, honours the goddess Durga and commemorates the triumph
24:06of good over evil.
24:08In Wajarad, where Navatri is widely celebrated, the festivities are marked by Garba, a traditional
24:16folk dance, performs in circles of rhythmic music.
24:21Participants wear colourful traditional clothing as they gather to dance and take part in religious
24:26observance throughout the festival.
24:29Navrat, Rhi brings communities together through shared cultural and spiritual traditions, with
24:34Garba remaining one of the celebration's most distinctive features in the Western Indian state.
24:48And with these informations we have come to the end of this news brief.
