00:00Here's the snaps give. Christian looking, pushing, pushing, pushing, and he's in! Touchdown 49ers!
00:08Number two on the night for CMC, and that was all about effort.
00:12Sam Fran Radio with the call. 49ers survive against the Commanders and offensive linemen.
00:19Face mask ruins what could have been the game-winning rushing touchdown for D.C.
00:24And did Dan Quinn and Jaden Daniels forget fourth down again?
00:29It's Sean and RJ, the Cowboys insider Bobby Belt, and every Tuesday and Thursday at this time on the Fan
00:34Cam,
00:35Twitch, and YouTube, Tommy Yarsh, brought to you by the Windstar World Casino and Resort.
00:39Proud to be the casino of the Dallas Cowboys. Please game responsibly.
00:43Tommy, do you think they forgot fourth down, or Dan Quinn has his excuse by saying,
00:48no, there was a flag, so I was wondering what they were going to do after the flag.
00:54I would think that they knew it was fourth down. I'll be honest, I only watched the tail end of
00:59that game.
01:00I was trying to catch up on sleep. I saw, like, the last drive that they were going down.
01:04But I saw the clip on social media. I would think that everybody knows.
01:09I know that the game management stuff's been under question a lot there,
01:13but everything that I've been told about Dan Quinn, about people here who have covered him,
01:17said, yeah, this guy's a good coach. He knows what he's doing.
01:19And I know it's not all going well up there, but even after, you know, the events of the last
01:24couple of weeks,
01:24knowing that, you know, the situations they've been in,
01:27I would think that they're kind of hyper-aware for those situations.
01:31So, yeah, I think they knew it was fourth down.
01:33Steven Jones yesterday told, gave Brian Schottenheimer a vote of confidence on KNC.
01:39Schottie said, you know, didn't necessarily need to hear that.
01:42Nice in his press conference. Also said he was pissed off and the players were pissed off.
01:46I thought that you and the media did a very, very nice job with all the questioning yesterday.
01:50What were the biggest things that you took from the presser?
01:55Yeah, I think that, you know, that was the part that stood out to me that, you know,
01:59he says he likes an angry team, not necessarily a measured one.
02:03Now, you know, how do you get that to translate?
02:06Obviously, that's the biggest question.
02:08And, you know, the one thing that stuck out to me and what I asked him about was,
02:12you know, Dak after the game saying, yeah,
02:14we feel like we have the right process.
02:16We feel like we practice the right way.
02:18But when it comes to game days and Sundays,
02:22we just feel like we were not able to execute.
02:25And so I tried to ask, like, what is the kind of the disconnect there?
02:29Like, where do you find that bridge to figuring the two things out?
02:36And, you know, that's obviously going to be the most important thing in terms of how this team gets things
02:42turned around and whether or not they can do that.
02:46And the NFC East that appears very wide open after nobody wins over the last two weeks.
02:52So, you know, that part of the presser was was important.
02:55And, you know, acknowledging the fact that they really struggle with some of these blitz pickups over the last two
02:59weeks offensively.
03:00And that's been something that has been a thorn in their side.
03:04And, you know, whether that's protection, whether that's, you know,
03:08I thought Nick Harris asked a really good question about some of the stop routes.
03:11And his answer on that was good.
03:13Recap that for us, Tom.
03:14Yeah, that was a very informative.
03:16What's that?
03:17Can you recap that for us?
03:20The stopping the quick routes and those sorts of things?
03:23Yeah.
03:23Yeah, I think that, you know, it's part of the offense, but at the same time, you know, he was
03:31talking about how when they get out of contain,
03:33when they get into those scramble situations and Dak Prescott's moving around, their scramble rules have to be better.
03:39There are a certain number of things that your receivers have to do in those situations to make themselves available
03:44for the quarterback.
03:44And I think that that's something that, you know, they'll look to do when those situations arise and if those
03:50situations arise,
03:51considering how, you know, how much Dak has been pressured and if he gets out of the pocket to try
03:57and evade some of those situations like we saw him do,
04:00guys need to do a better job of making themselves available for him if that does come to pass.
04:06Tommy, how do you break down the pie then?
04:08Like, do you put a lot of that on the quarterback for the protections and the set and all that
04:13on the coaching?
04:13I mean, how do you, the offensive line, how do you break down that pie?
04:18I think you spread it around pretty well.
04:21And, you know, what's surprising about it, and I know you guys have talked about it, but, you know, Dak
04:26has been pretty good at this over the course of his career.
04:28And, you know, you don't want to just throw all that away over a two-game sample.
04:33But clearly something these last two weeks, there's been some sort of thing that these two defensive coordinators and Todd
04:39Bowles,
04:40or, well, head coach Todd Bowles and then Jonathan Gannon, the defensive coordinator, have identified that said,
04:44hey, this is where we see the gap in this.
04:47And there's some sort of disconnect that, you know, the Cowboys have not been able to figure out
04:53in terms of why these looks have been confusing or why pressure is coming from different places
04:59that maybe they're not expecting it to come from.
05:02So part of that is on, you know, the identification portion of it, and that happens, you know, throughout the
05:07week
05:07and, of course, leading up to the snap.
05:10But, you know, then there is some protection issues.
05:12I think that as the game wore on, the blitz started to wear on, and you started to see some
05:17guys, you know,
05:18struggle to keep up against it just because you're seeing so much of it.
05:23And then, you know, making sure that Javante Williams is in the right place, the tight ends are blocking the
05:27right way.
05:27I know that's been something that has been up and down for this team over the last few weeks.
05:31There's a lot that goes into it, but I truly do think as an offense entirely, they've got to figure
05:36out,
05:37okay, what has changed these last two games to where something that we felt like was a strong suit
05:42for our offense and our quarterback specifically has all of a sudden become a weakness.
05:46Tommy, you think that the defensive front has started to settle into place a little bit
05:51and is finding their rhythm?
05:53It seems like the last few weeks they've been able to generate more pressure with Rashawn Gary.
05:57Quentin Williams is seeming to settle back into place.
05:59Kenny Clark's had a couple good games.
06:01Do you think the vision for what they need to do up front on defense has finally started to click
06:06a little?
06:09I think it seemed like it on Sunday night.
06:11Yeah, I think it looked like they finally had some things figured out in terms of
06:17I didn't see as many of the stunts and twists on the interior, you know,
06:21where guys were either running into each other or just not really having success with it.
06:25I think you saw more success there.
06:28And then, you know, whenever Love would try to break contain, I felt like you saw, you know,
06:35Quentin Williams had a sack in that situation.
06:37Elijah Garcia had a sack in that situation.
06:39Kenny Clark didn't let him get outside on third down.
06:42I think that was maybe the more promising thing that you saw of these quarterbacks that have been able to
06:47run all over the place on you
06:49when the pockets collapsed.
06:50And, you know, I think all three of those sacks were not letting them get into space and not letting
06:55Love, you know,
06:56make a play either on the move or with his feet.
06:59But, yeah, you could feel that the pocket was disrupted a little bit more.
07:03Did it ultimately matter?
07:06Not really.
07:07I didn't think so.
07:08Of course, you know, pressure is great, and this team has been lacking it.
07:11But they've got to be able to get the quarterback on the ground more.
07:13And they did to their credit on Sunday night.
07:16But there are still, you know, too many situations where Love's got plenty of time to throw.
07:20He can launch some of the deep passes.
07:23And, you know, I'm sure the Cowboys are happy they have Joey Porter Jr. now to take some of those
07:27away.
07:28But there were a couple plays that, you know, guys just dropped touchdown passes.
07:33Golden had two.
07:34Christian Watson had one on the play where Malachi Lawrence is playing 26 yards downfield
07:38and got a hand on the ball in the middle of the end zone.
07:41But, yeah, I think that's a promising sign in terms of this seems like a unit that had really struggled
07:48to put any pressure on the quarterback.
07:50Now they've just got to show they can continue to do it and get him on the ground.
07:53So, with the struggles that have been shown from Savone Revel, including on Sunday night,
08:00when Durant gets back, is that kind of comfortably your corner group right there?
08:05Is Durant, Porter, Bland, and then using downs however you need across the formation?
08:11It feels like it.
08:13Yeah, it feels like it.
08:14But I think they'll still, you know, probably have one more body because we saw Revel and Speed both play
08:19a good chunk in that game.
08:20And I know part of that was because Porter got hurt.
08:25But, you know, I would look at that last spot and say it's Revel and Speed,
08:30and those guys are probably going to battle it out for it.
08:33And I know that, you know, when you get that deep on the depth chart, what does it come down
08:37to?
08:37It's special teams.
08:38And I think Speed is a guy that they really value on special teams.
08:43So, you know, Revel's got some work to do.
08:45You know, he hasn't played up to what he would want to play for
08:48or what the Cowboys certainly hope he would play up for.
08:52And he's had his moments.
08:53But, yeah, I would agree that Sunday night was not his best night.
08:56And, yeah, if Durant comes back, then that's going to be some tough decisions needed to be made in the
09:00corner room.
09:00Tommy Arsh, DallasCowboys.com.
09:02Every Tuesday at this time on Sean and RJ, what is your opinion and take on the George Pickens involvement
09:10discussion?
09:13Yeah, I think that, you know, I would agree to a degree that guys have done a –
09:19opposing defenses have done a good job of taking him away, and that's opened some stuff up for C.D.
09:24Lamb.
09:24But at the same time, you know, some of the bread and butter stuff that we saw last year with
09:30him,
09:30like some of the slant routes, we haven't seen that as much.
09:33You know, they talk about moving him around and moving him around the formation.
09:37And there's been a little bit of that, but maybe not to the degree that I expected
09:41just because of how much they talked about it over the course of the offseason.
09:45And, you know, I think there are ways to get him more involved in the game early.
09:49I mean, any time he is one-on-one, I mean, he's open, I feel like.
09:55And, you know, you can get him – you can throw him the ball in those situations
09:58and feel confident that more than likely you're going to get a pass interference call
10:03or you're going to get a ridiculous highlight play
10:06because those are the kinds of plays that he can make.
10:10So, you know, I agree with what Brian Schottheimer said yesterday,
10:12that, yeah, they've got to figure out a way to get him more involved in the offense early in games
10:17and over the course of games because this offense just hasn't been explosive this year.
10:21I think I looked somewhere and they're among the worst in the league
10:24and explosive plays offensively, and he's an explosive play waiting to happen.
10:29And whether that happens, you know, on a pass interference call
10:32or on a ridiculous highlight play that he is more than capable of making,
10:36you know, he's a guy that you take your shots with,
10:39and when they need a shot play, that's where you should go.
10:41Tommy, so you mentioned that, like, if he's one-on-one,
10:44like, they've got to find a way to get him the ball, but they're not.
10:46Is that being coached out of Dak,
10:49or is that something that he's choosing not to do on his own
10:52to kind of force the ball to him?
10:56Well, I mean, if there's a situation where he's in double coverage,
10:59I think that's just normal, hey, you don't want to throw that ball.
11:03Can he go up and get it? Sure.
11:05But your odds of success in double coverage versus single coverage go way down,
11:11and you don't necessarily have the insurance of, okay,
11:15maybe this is pass interference because you have another guy there
11:18that can just pick the pass off and, you know, ruin everything.
11:21But, no, I don't think there's any part of this that says, hey,
11:25don't throw to George.
11:27That would be, you know, that's not – that wouldn't be very beneficial to your offense.
11:32And they've tried to get it working with it.
11:35What's that?
11:36Yeah, well, no, you're right.
11:39But there's – I think it's really just – part of it, again,
11:43is guys are trying to take him away because of what he is down the field
11:47and teams don't want to make this offense explosive.
11:50But that leaves some of the bread and butter stuff that can be open
11:54that I was talking about last year.
11:56I'm glad you said that, Tommy, because yesterday I was very alarmed
12:00when I heard Brian Schottenheimer say Green Bay was daring us to pass.
12:04And if you gave me my choice heading into the season or basically any game,
12:09do I want the Dallas Cowboys to be dared to pass or run,
12:14I would like the Dallas Cowboys to throw and pass.
12:17How does that make sense when Schottenheimer said,
12:20and why would teams say we're daring you to throw on us?
12:23Make sense of that for me.
12:26I think it's because the Packers are really confident in their secondary.
12:30I think they're fourth in the league in passing yards allowed.
12:34And, I mean, they looked the part.
12:35They played very, very, very well.
12:37And, yeah, when teams are daring this offense to throw,
12:41I would expect them to throw the ball because they've got CeeDee Lamb
12:44and George Pickens.
12:45But the other reason they were daring them to throw the ball
12:47is because they were having so much success at the line of scrimmage,
12:50confusing guys and getting home on the quarterback,
12:53that it makes it difficult to throw the ball.
12:55So that's why they're daring you to throw it.
12:58You know, Brian Schottenheimer gets paid a lot more than I do
13:01to call plays for this offense.
13:04How much more?
13:05Significant.
13:07But, you know, I think that if they're daring you to throw the ball,
13:12they also might be daring you to run the ball
13:14because you think about the blitz pressures that they're bringing
13:16and how many guys they were bringing up from the line of scrimmage.
13:19I think there were opportunities there late in that game.
13:22You know, when it's still a two-possession game after the Javante touchdown
13:25and even after they, you know, kicked the field goal
13:28to make it a 13-point game, it's only a 13-point.
13:31It's still two possessions either way.
13:33And for there to only be one run play called after that,
13:37I thought it was pretty surprising.
13:39So I would have, you know, tried to run the ball a little bit more.
13:42And that's how you stop their pass rush.
13:44That's how you make them, you know, dare you to throw,
13:48but you give Dak Prescott time to throw
13:50and time for these receivers to get open.
13:52You know, when you get one-dimensional like that and you run,
13:54I think I saw somewhere it was like 32 straight passing plays,
13:58then that's just making it tough on your offense.
14:00It doesn't matter how elite your wide receivers are
14:02if it's, you know, almost somewhat predictable at that point.
14:06And it doesn't need to be like that.
14:08And Schadheimer said yesterday that they're, you know,
14:09going to be more balanced going forward.
14:12But the imbalance there was pretty surprising,
14:14and I thought, you know, there were some opportunities to run the ball.
14:17Good stuff, Tommy.
14:18We appreciate it.
14:18We'll talk Thursday.
14:20All right, guys.
14:21Have a good one.
