00:00Tommy Yarsh, every Thursday at this time from DallasCowboys.com, brought to you by the Windstar World Casino and Resort.
00:07Proud to be the official casino of the Dallas Cowboys. Please game responsibly.
00:12Good morning, Thomas.
00:13Are you going to start a fight with Tommy today?
00:15Good morning, guys. It's great to be on with y'all.
00:20It's so cool.
00:23Do we have a ruling on who started what?
00:26I don't think anybody started anything, except for the purpose of right now. I'm saying Sean started it.
00:30You guys decide.
00:31I don't think anybody started it.
00:33We'll talk about it tonight.
00:34But I did have correspondence with Nick Eatman after the program.
00:39Correspondence?
00:40Yes.
00:40And it went exactly...
00:41Did you send carrier pigeons?
00:45Are they poisonous?
00:48Then I did send them.
00:50I think he said...
00:52Because communication. That does sound very official.
00:55No, you guys kept looking at me as if I was going to do something like crazy or...
01:00But I knew how I was going to get resolved later on in the day.
01:03Because me and Nick, we're good.
01:06I knew we'd be good.
01:07Kumbaya.
01:08Kumbaya.
01:08I'll go into detail later on tonight.
01:11As Tommy knows.
01:14Tommy, Jerry Jones yesterday at the owners' meetings was like,
01:18Nope, not selling.
01:19Unless it's a big Micah Parsons-type haul.
01:21Well, trade deadline is today.
01:26What would your vote be if you were in the Cowboy War Room?
01:31In terms of sell or buy?
01:33Like, you know, try to get guys?
01:35I would still look to buy.
01:38I think when you look at the resources that have been put into this team,
01:44you know, you are in the division, the way that everything is shaken out,
01:46and nobody's really separating themselves, you are still in a position to go on a run.
01:51And so if you feel like you can get somebody that continues to help you this year,
01:56then, yeah, I say buy.
01:58It wouldn't make a ton of sense at this point in time to be like,
02:02Well, we've put all these resources into it,
02:04and, yeah, let's go ahead and just sell the stock.
02:07Right.
02:08I think that this roster is still in a position to, if they can find their footing,
02:13compete for the division title.
02:15And then, you know, football is a – Brian Broadus has it, you know, really down to a T.
02:20The NFL is a strange lady, right?
02:21Like, this can go any number of different ways when the postseason hits,
02:25and it depends who's hot at the right time.
02:27So, yeah, I think I would still be in the buying portion of this
02:31just because if you continue to add good talent to your team,
02:34you get to the postseason, then all you need to do is just find a hot streak,
02:39and then you can hopefully ride it into February.
02:41Tommy, is that like – and I understand that most teams, they think like that,
02:45but is that smart?
02:47Like, what are the odds?
02:48Like, right, what are the odds if they make the playoffs, they go on a run?
02:51It seems like you're just buying a lottery ticket,
02:54and is that a smart reason to go and buy?
03:00You saying I'm not smart?
03:02No, no, no.
03:03Who are you going to tell me?
03:04Hey, let's go.
03:04Round two, round two.
03:05I'm just messing with you.
03:06Hey, hey, what, you were National Honor Society, what, three times?
03:10Three times than I was Spanish National Honor Society once.
03:13Oh!
03:16Bilingual!
03:17I know.
03:17I honestly didn't know there was two.
03:18Yeah.
03:19Buenos dias right now.
03:22But, no, I understand the question,
03:25and I think that, you know, again, it just depends on, you know,
03:29when you get hot.
03:30And I think that NFL teams think from the perspective of,
03:33especially the Cowboys, of, look, we've put so much into this.
03:36We're really confident in the players that we've gone to acquire.
03:39We're confident in the players that we've given big contracts to.
03:42We've got an offense that, once they find their footing
03:45and get everything back in rhythm,
03:47we feel like can easily move up and down the field
03:49and keep us in games against just about anybody.
03:52We don't know if there's a defense that really scares us, per se,
03:55if we, again, if they find some balance
03:57and figure out how to perform against the Blitz
03:59compared to the last two weeks.
04:01And then defensively, you know,
04:03there are people who have thought that they've gotten better in spurts.
04:06I was talking to somebody, and that's how we kind of put it,
04:09is they've gotten better in spurts,
04:10and the spurts come in different places every week.
04:12So they feel like they're close in that sense of, you know,
04:17finally putting the pieces of the puzzle together defensively.
04:20And, you know, whether that, they're hoping that happens, of course,
04:23whether or not there's a transaction.
04:25But maybe a, you know, some sort of transaction or addition
04:27might be a big piece of that puzzle
04:31in terms of trying to finally put it all together.
04:33So that's why I think, you know, the more optimistic view
04:36maybe necessarily isn't the worst thing.
04:38Does that mean it's guaranteed to work?
04:40No, you can only have one team that wins the NFC
04:42and one team that wins the Super Bowl.
04:44But you wouldn't be doing yourself or your team justice
04:47if you weren't at least trying.
04:50What is the position or what's the spot you're targeting?
04:53Is it just an easy slam dunk edge rusher for you
04:56if you were to make a deal at the deadline?
04:58Or do you say, man, they could stand to get better up front.
05:00They could stand to get better on the second level.
05:04I would say I would have to be pretty wowed by a deal
05:08for it not to be a pass rusher.
05:10You know, there are obviously great players in other positions
05:13that could become available.
05:14You never know what happens.
05:16But I think, and I've told you guys this a million times
05:19when I've come and talked to you all,
05:21is, you know, you can never have enough good pass rushers
05:23and you can never have enough guys that can get after the quarterback
05:26when they pin their ears back.
05:27So I'm sticking on that train.
05:29I think you go and get a pass rusher.
05:31Tommy and Nick have the Philadelphia Eagles preview up
05:35at dallascowboys.com.
05:38The report from NFL Network that Saquon Barkley is about to return to practice.
05:42He looks like he is going to be a go for Monday night.
05:46Set us up with a little filthy preview, Tommy.
05:49Yeah, this offense is, you know, obviously very different without Jalen Hurts.
05:53And, of course, we hope that, you know, he's doing okay
05:55and he can get his medical deal figured out.
05:58But Tanner McKee getting his second start of the season, you know, up and down.
06:03They tried to move the ball a little bit behind the line of scrimmage.
06:06I think they had 29 passes that were less than 10 air yards.
06:10So they're looking quick game.
06:11They're looking some of those quick stop routes turn around.
06:14They're looking to get the ball out into the flat to the running back.
06:16So that's why Saquon Barkley coming back, you know,
06:19could have a really big impact on this game.
06:20We saw the Packers last week have a lot of success
06:23when they were dumping stuff off into the flat to the running backs.
06:26They were able to get past the linebackers and, you know,
06:28move the chains on third and longs and, you know,
06:30just keep the offense on schedule.
06:32So Saquon Barkley will take a lot of weight off of that
06:35in terms of getting downfield.
06:36And then he'll help on the run game as well.
06:38They couldn't really run the ball too well last week.
06:41Damian Pierce had a couple good runs early,
06:43but after that they were pretty keyed in on it.
06:46So that's where they're at offensively.
06:47Defensively, it hasn't been as, you know, good of a year, I think,
06:50for what you would expect from a Vic Fangio team.
06:53But, excuse me, they've got the personnel to turn that around an instant.
06:56You know, their interior defensive line, Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis,
07:01one of the best in the league.
07:02And, you know, the corners they've got in Mitchell and Dejean,
07:05super good players.
07:06So this is not going to be another easy matchup for Dallas.
07:10And, you know, they've got to show that they can go out and beat teams
07:14that are a little bit underhanded or, I'm trying to think of the right word,
07:18that are missing some key players because there's been a lot of change.
07:22This is, under man, thank you.
07:24This will be the game where, you know, we were talking about Dallas' defense
07:28finally putting one together, just a consistently, you know,
07:32all four quarters they're doing everything well.
07:34They have a chance to do it in this game.
07:36But right now you've just got to show us that you can do it first
07:39before we can definitively say, okay, they're going to play well.
07:43Tommy, Vic Fangio got asked yesterday about Christian Parker,
07:47and he had been a little coy, just was like, hey, he's a good coach.
07:51I'm sure he'll figure it out.
07:51He's like, I haven't watched any tape of them this year.
07:53And he was like, we haven't had any crossover like you normally would on tape
07:56by this point of the season.
07:57He's like kind of surprising, but haven't seen him,
07:59don't know what's going on over there, but he's a good coach.
08:01He'll figure it out.
08:02Do you worry at all, especially after, like, you know,
08:04you get Greg Roman in week one who seems to, you know,
08:07be able to sun him a little bit and some of the other things.
08:10Do you worry at all about Fangio and Sirianni having such a good handle on Parker
08:14and his philosophy that some of that regression may come back
08:18with a coaching staff that knows how to attack them?
08:22Maybe, yeah.
08:23Yeah, my question would be, do they have the personnel to do what they want to do?
08:27Like, do they have, you know, is Tanner McKee somebody that they feel confident in
08:31if, you know, they really want to attack that secondary and say, hey, you know,
08:35we feel like we can have success on the deep ball
08:38because some of these corners can get the penalty flags drawn on them
08:41or, hey, they've had success.
08:43They've had a lot of trouble on third and long.
08:45Do we feel like we can pick up 15 yards through the year consistently
08:48if that's the kind of situations that we're in offensively?
08:51But, yeah, I think there's always going to be advantages that you have
08:55if it's a pupil that you're playing against, you know,
08:57the old student versus teacher type of deal.
09:00You're going to have certain things that you know about.
09:03Oh, hey, Joe Milton.
09:03Good to see you, pal.
09:06Joe Milton's there in Frisco?
09:08He's on the fan cam.
09:09No, I probably just put a picture of him up on the fan cam.
09:14But, yeah, I guess, I mean, if he's in the game,
09:16then, yeah, you feel a little confident, more confident about that.
09:19He can rifle it in there.
09:20But, no, I think the question for me would be do they have the personnel
09:24to be able to fully take advantage of that.
09:28Is this a Dallas-Goddard game for them?
09:33It can be, yeah.
09:34I think it will be.
09:35I think this was one where they tried to go his way a lot.
09:38Last week, you know, I talked about the stop routes and stuff like that.
09:42They got Goddard pretty involved.
09:44So I would expect him to have a solid day.
09:47But at the same time, it will be a chance for Caleb Downs
09:51to have a much better game.
09:52He's struggled in coverage the last couple weeks.
09:54But I think he's in a more advantageous spot in the slot this time
09:59because it's Goddard and Makai Lemon that he'll be working against primarily.
10:04And I think those are two matchups that can benefit him a little bit.
10:09What did you think of Lemon when he was coming out?
10:11We had some split disagreements.
10:12I know we're talking about him.
10:14Jared Sandler, who's a USC guy here, loved him, thought he was going to be a superstar.
10:18I know he said kind of a slow start.
10:19But what did you think of Lemon coming out and his skill set?
10:23Yeah, I wasn't as big of a fan as some other people were.
10:26I had a couple wide receivers higher.
10:29I just wasn't, you know, USC is such a high-volume passing offense.
10:33And I think their quarterback now, Maiava, has got like a billion passing yards
10:38to start the season.
10:38And he's significantly out in front of the passing yards, you know,
10:41category in terms of NCAA quarterbacks.
10:44So, you know, they got him the ball a lot.
10:47And, you know, he had some incredible highlight plays.
10:50And I think what he's struggled with in the NFL has been consistency.
10:54He's had some drops here and there.
10:57I'm not sure how good of a separator he is.
10:59And I'm not trying to dollar on the guy.
11:01He's got a chance to be a good player.
11:03But, you know, I think you've seen maybe the rookie learning curve for him
11:07a little bit more early and often than some other guys.
11:11And I think that might just be something where he's got to figure out, you know,
11:15how can I use the route running that I've got to create advantageous situations
11:20for myself.
11:21And I think that that's only something that is going to come together over time.
11:24But, yeah, I was lower on him than most.
11:27Tommy Yars, DallasCowboys.com, here on Sean and RJ,
11:31previewing Filthy Monday night on this radio station.
11:34Tommy, do either of these sound off to you or you see where Vegas is going?
11:39The Cowboys are favored by 4.5 and the over-under is 44.5.
11:46You disagree or you raise an eyebrow at either one?
11:54The points would be a little bit interesting.
11:57I think this is another one where there could be some points in this game.
12:01I think, you know, I think this is an offense that is going to look to really get back in
12:09rhythm and be able to put some up.
12:11I'm not shocked that the Cowboys are favored.
12:13I don't know how, you know, the creations of all these lines go.
12:17And, of course, you know, Roger, just to make sure I'm not betting, never have bet,
12:20as long as I've been here.
12:22But, you know, I'm not surprised that the Cowboys are favored.
12:28I think that this is a game that, on paper, they should be able to come out with a win
12:33just because of all the, you know, undermanned players that, you know,
12:36Philadelphia has got and the certain situations and position rooms that they have them in,
12:40there should be an opportunity here for Dallas to get back in the win column.
12:44But, again, they've got to show us that they can do that before you feel confident about it.
12:50Thank you, Tommy.
12:51We get the full game recap from you on Tuesday morning.
12:55Appreciate it.
12:57Awesome.
12:57Thanks, guys.
12:58Looking forward to it.
