00:00K-Rock We Are Client Alley Show. That is Weezer. They are one of the many bands we just announced
00:04that will be taking to that rotating stage.
00:06Some people have given K-Rock's Almost Acoustic Christmas credit for the development of the rotating stage where it first
00:11started there many years ago.
00:13Meanwhile, we have pressing issues to get to because on our phone right now is the man that is making
00:18a lot of your holiday wishes come true.
00:20He's a modern-day Santa Claus, and I don't just say that because of the beard. Please say hi to
00:24the great Dave Grohl.
00:25Dave?
00:26Hi.
00:28Thank you so much for playing our holiday show. It is not the first time you've done it, but for
00:33many people, they are saying that they are so excited to get a chance to see you guys at the
00:38forum.
00:39You know what it is? I'll tell you what it is. It's the rotating stage.
00:44Yeah.
00:45It's everything.
00:46I don't know if I'd ever played on a rotating stage before my first Acoustic Christmas, so it's good to
00:54be back.
00:54It's the OG rotating stage.
00:57I was looking it up, and I think the last time you played Almost Acoustic Christmas was in 2006, so
01:02this would be the 20-year anniversary of Foo Fighters headlining Almost Acoustics.
01:06Wow.
01:06It's a pleasure to have you back.
01:09Thank you very much.
01:10You know what's funny? Right as I was dialing, I realized that I met Taylor Hawkins at an Acoustic Christmas.
01:18That's where we first met was when we played an Acoustic Christmas.
01:21I think it was with Alanis Morissette, and he came up and said hello.
01:26Yeah, all the other bands, you better keep your drummers tight because Dave could pluck one of them away from
01:31you. Watch out.
01:32I don't know. You know, it's funny. The drummer we have now is the best drummer in the world, and
01:36he's not going anywhere.
01:38Ilan Rubin is such a monster. He's incredible.
01:41Yeah, well, we saw some of the footage from the show you guys played over the weekend for the Silver
01:45Lake Conservatory of Music, and it looked incredible.
01:47So, of course, everybody wants to see Foo Fighters always, but to see you guys in action with the new
01:52drummer is going to be especially special.
01:55Yeah, he's awesome. I mean, we've been on tour for a year, and so the last year we've just been
02:00running around playing these three-hour-long shows filled with, you know, all the songs from the last 30 years,
02:07and it's been a blast. It's been awesome, and he's incredible. Yeah.
02:11I am lucky to say that I have seen the Foo Fighters live many times, so much so that I've
02:15been at shows where you've run curfew, where they've shut off the lights, and you continue to play.
02:20And I always wonder, because, you know, I think you guys probably play per average longer than any other band,
02:25and I think it looks like you were having so much fun. It still looks like this.
02:29Are you having that level of fun, and do you even know how long you're up on stage playing, or
02:32are you, like, at the end when you go? They're like, that was four and a half hours, Dave.
02:36Well, you know, there's actually a clock on the side of the stage to tell us when we have to
02:43stop.
02:43So it's almost like there's a timer running. It's like, you have to be offstage at this time, or else
02:50there's going to be fines, and there's curfews and stuff, and so I'm really conscious of it, the whole show.
02:56But it does, for us, it goes by really quickly, because the way we usually, these days, the way that
03:04we write a set list, it's according to this big stage production thing we have,
03:11which is basically, like, the first hour and ten minutes, it's on the big part of the stage.
03:18Then we go out to this thing we talk in the middle of the stadium, we play there for another,
03:22like, half an hour, and then we come back, and then we have it sort of designed so that those
03:30three hours go by really quickly.
03:32And, yeah. But, I mean, by the end of the show, it's like I'm limping to the hotel, so you
03:39can definitely feel that it's a long gig.
03:41But how many thousands of dollars do you think you've paid in curfew fines over the years that you've been
03:46a band and gone past the time you're supposed to play?
03:49I mean, it must be hundreds of thousands by now.
03:51I don't really know. You're probably right, but I'm not sure. I've never thought of that, actually.
03:58You know, what's funny is...
03:59It's a call to my manager, John Stilwell.
04:00But it's all worth it.
04:00I'll have to call him afterwards.
04:02Yeah, don't ruin this, Ali. They're going to pull out now. Jesus Christ.
04:04You know, it's funny. It was a few years ago, I was trick-or-treating, walking up and down in
04:07the valley, and I did see Dave Grohl walking up the street,
04:10and I went up to Dave. It was right after we started doing the show here at K-Rock, and
04:13I said,
04:13Dave, we have our holiday show coming up. If you've got any free time, we'd love you to play it.
04:17And he was very pleasant. We had a nice little chat. I'm sure you don't remember it, but it was
04:20in the sidewalks of Studio City area.
04:23And then here we are all these years later, and you finally came through on that promise, and it means
04:27a lot to me,
04:27even though I'm sure this moment meant nothing to you.
04:30You know, I do remember that, because we always go to that neighborhood every year to trick-or-treat,
04:37and I remember bumping into you. It was on, well, I don't want to say exactly where it was,
04:42but yes, I do remember that. I don't remember what my costume was. I don't know if I had,
04:47I don't think I had one that year.
04:48Well, the funny thing is, I said to myself, I go, that guy's got a, I couldn't say it couldn't
04:52be Dave Grohl.
04:52I go, this is the best Dave Grohl costume I've ever seen in my entire life.
04:55And then as you got closer, I was like, oh, wait, that is Dave Grohl. That is Dave Grohl.
04:59Yeah, or was it?
05:00Or maybe not. Maybe we never had this conversation.
05:03Actually, ages ago, I think we played at, there was like, I think there might have been
05:08like a K-Rock Halloween show or something. This is ages ago. And I remember we were in the middle
05:15of,
05:15this might have been like 1998 or something. We were in the middle of this crazy, crazy long tour,
05:21and I was so exhausted that my costume, I just went as really tired. So I just put on pajamas
05:29and like two dark circles under my eyes. It was like, it really didn't look any different
05:33than I always look. So yeah.
05:35Well, we certainly appreciate you calling. They didn't tell us who was going to call.
05:38They said somebody from the lineup is going to call. And I was like, well, it's definitely
05:40not going to be Dave Grohl because he can't say the F word on the radio. He would never
05:43call into the radio station. But here you are.
05:47I haven't dropped one more.
05:48Not yet.
05:49No, no. Just add it to the list of fines that he doesn't realize he's paying, I'm sure.
05:52We are so thankful on behalf of all of our listeners. You should see this text line.
05:56It is explosive right now. Everyone beyond excited. It feels like it is going to be the
06:01greatest one yet. And we're so happy to welcome you back to K-Rock's Almost Acoustic Christmas.
06:05That rotating stage, which has given so many a rock stars vertigo over the years, is returning.
06:10And Dave Grohl will be there headlining with his band of Foo Fighters. A historic show,
06:14I'm sure. And Dave, thank you so much. Maybe the only other thing we ask now is that after
06:18the show, when we go out to the parking lot, everyone's selling the bacon-wrapped hot dogs.
06:22You're out there doing some of your world-famous barbecue.
06:24Oh, you want me to smoke it up? I will. If you want, I'll bring a cooker out there
06:29and we can blast some barbecue for sure.
06:31I've smelled it so many times, but the lines are always so long or I'm not an un-house person.
06:36Dave likes to help people out.
06:37You do it before or after the show.
06:39Well, he's got to start smoking probably now to be ready for showtime.
06:41You know what's crazy? Actually, this weekend, we're doing one for Hope United, the organization
06:45we always cook for. And we're doing, I think we're doing 5,000 people this weekend.
06:51Damn. So, yeah. So, coming to the Acoustic Christmas with a smoker, that's easy.
06:57All right. I'll hook it up.
06:58Dave, you're the best. We just keep asking and asking and asking. And he's no one better
07:02out there than the great Dave Grohl. And we can't wait to see it. K-Rock's almost Acoustic
07:05Christmas. Thanks, Dave.
07:07All right. See you soon.
07:07Thanks so much. That's the great Dave Grohl on K-Rock. Well, people said, you guys, today's
07:10the day that I finally accepted the fact that Klein Alley is legitimate. You've got
07:13a real legitimate A-lister calling your show.
07:16I didn't think it was going to happen, to be honest.
07:18I am surprised. Especially because Vanessa said, we have a ghoul on the phone. And I
07:22thought it was a Halloween call.
07:25Dave Grohl.
07:26I said, we have a ghoul calling. That's amazing.
07:33I mean, that would be like us, to do an impersonator.
07:36I'm so glad I didn't answer the phone and say, yes, good morning, ghoul, and welcome
07:38to the greatest Halloween season. Dave Grohl on our phone. Another person you'll see on
07:43that stage when it rotates will be this woman right here, Julia Wolfe, who was in our studio
07:47recently. She practices witchcraft. And here she is on K-Rock.
07:52KROQ.
07:52Klein Alley Show.
07:54Warnings on K-Rock.
07:55K-Rock.
07:56Yeah!
07:57K-Rock.
