00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:33Now we've all heard about ASBO's anti-social behaviour orders dished out to those people that cause disruption and distress,
00:42keeps them under control.
00:43But not long ago, I was surprised to hear about an ASBO that was given way back in 2012, Rachel,
00:51to a swan.
00:52A swan.
00:53Now, apparently the story was that Mr. ASBO, as the swan became known, had been attacking rowers and picnickers in
01:02Cambridge.
01:02And he became such a nuisance that the authorities, donned protective clothing, approached Mr. ASBO and said, the game's up,
01:11son.
01:12They took him up and they took him 60 miles away where he could do less harm and become a
01:18nuisance.
01:19So I thought, have I come across an animal that deserves an ASBO?
01:23And we did.
01:24We had a little New Forest pony called Pimple, odd name for pony.
01:28And we used to ride this thing around bareback on our feet.
01:30It used to throw us off regularly.
01:31And then, in order to get its own back, used to stand on an item of clothing on the sleeve
01:36or the trousers and look the other way.
01:37And you couldn't actually free it until help came.
01:42I'm on the side of the pony when it comes to you.
01:44All right.
01:44Now then, Rachel, we've got Nick Meredith back, a Royal Navy commander from Plymouth, stationed in Mons in Belgium.
01:52Won yesterday, narrowish win, Nick, but you're here and you're joined by Natalie Mattale from London.
02:00Natalie volunteers in the Legal Advice Centre, I think.
02:04Is that right?
02:05Yes, that's correct.
02:06Self-taught guitarist, loves writing songs and comes up with the lyrics in your dreams.
02:11I do, yes.
02:12That's a great talent to have.
02:13That's fantastic.
02:14And now, you were once chased by a horse.
02:17I was stopped by a pony.
02:18What was this horse that chased you?
02:20What's the other one about?
02:21It was during my Duke of Edinburgh's Awards.
02:23It was about 12 years ago now, but me and a friend of mine and the team, we were sort
02:27of lagging behind and trying to get across this field to get to a footpath.
02:31And I just remember this horse just galloping in our direction.
02:35It's just crazy because she was shorter than me.
02:37So I was trying to sort of cross over and I, you know, went quickly.
02:40And then she's trying to get her little legs over the sort of fence.
02:43And it was just, it was so funny.
02:45It was funny.
02:45It wasn't funny then, but it is now.
02:48It's scary.
02:48No, if you've got a big horse lumbering towards you or galloping towards you and they do it and then
02:53they suddenly stop sort of thing.
02:54But until they stop, you know.
02:55Exactly.
02:56And you could get knocked over.
02:58Anyway, you didn't.
02:59Well done, Natalie.
03:00Good luck.
03:00So a big round of applause for Natalie and Nick Meredith.
03:08And over in the corner on this Tuesday, of course, Susie, joined once again by the wonderful Tanny Gray-Thompson,
03:16Baroness Tanny Gray-Thompson.
03:17Welcome back.
03:18Welcome back.
03:19Now, Nick Meredith, it's a letters game for you.
03:22Hi, Rach.
03:23Hi, Nick.
03:23Can I have a consonant, please?
03:25Start today with F.
03:28And another.
03:29T.
03:31And another.
03:33N.
03:34And a vowel.
03:35E.
03:36And another vowel.
03:38I.
03:39And another vowel.

03:54And here's the countdown clock.
04:27Yes, Nick?
04:28A seven.
04:29A seven.
04:30Natalie?
04:31Just a six.
04:32And that six?
04:33A front.
04:34A front?
04:34Yes.
04:35Thank you, Nick.
04:36Fainter.
04:38Yes, more faint.
04:39Absolutely fine.
04:40There we go.
04:41And Tani?
04:43This is one probably to query.
04:44Over fat.
04:46Yes.
04:46Is that allowed?
04:47You can be.
04:47If you're excessively fat, you're over fat.
04:49There's no hyphen.
04:51It's old English.
04:52So that has been around for a very long time.
04:54Obviously a worry for a very long time.
04:56Indeed.
04:58Seven points to Nick.
04:59And it's Natalie's letters game.
05:01Natalie?
05:02Could I please start with the consonant, Rachel?
05:04Thank you, Natalie.
05:06S.
05:07And another, please.
05:10T.
05:11And a vowel, please.

05:15Another vowel.
05:17U.
05:17A consonant, please.
05:21V.
05:23And another consonant.
05:25T.
05:26And a vowel, please.
05:29O.
05:31A consonant.
05:34R.
05:35And I'll finish off with another vowel, please.
05:39And lastly, E.
05:42Tantan.
05:43Tantan.
05:45Tantan.
05:48Tantan.
05:50Tantan.
05:58Tantan.
06:14Natalie?
06:15Just a six, that one.
06:18A six. And Nick?
06:19A seven.
06:20Natalie's six. Natalie?
06:23Robust.
06:24Robust. Thank you. Nick?
06:26Butties.
06:27Butties. As in bacon butties?
06:30As in bacon butties.
06:31I'd love a bacon butty.
06:33What have we got in the corner there? Tanya and Susie?
06:35The best I got was a six, which was suitor.
06:38Yeah.
06:39Yeah, with the O. Yeah, very good.
06:41Quite a few sevens, bitters, bustier, as well as butties.
06:45And for an eight, you can have tributes.
06:48Tributes. Very good.
06:52Here we are. It's numbers time.
06:55For Nick?
06:55Nick. Two from the top and four little ones, please.
06:59Thank you, Nick.
06:59Two large, four small.
07:01And the first numbers game of the day is two, eight, six, six.
07:07And the large one, 75 and 50.
07:10And the target, 856.
07:13Eight, five, six.
07:14Six, six, six.
07:45Yes, Nick?
07:47No, I'm miles away.
07:49Miles away.
07:50Natalie?
07:51All right, I'll try.
07:52I think I've got 856.
07:54OK.
07:55So, 6 plus 6 is 12.
07:58Yes.
07:59And then times 75.
08:01Yep, 900.
08:02900.
08:03And then take away 50.
08:05850.
08:06And then 8 minus 2 is 6.
08:08It is indeed.
08:08Well done, you've got it.
08:10Cracking.
08:11Well done.
08:13Well done indeed.
08:16Excellent.
08:17Let's have a tea time teaser.
08:19It's will fear.
08:21And the clue, this will help allay your fears about computer hacking.
08:24This will help allay your fears about computer hacking.
08:44Welcome back.
08:45I left you with the clue, this will help allay your fears about computer hacking.
08:49And the answer is firewall.
08:52Install a firewall.
08:55So, 14 to Nick.
08:56Natalie on 10.
08:57And it's Natalie's letters game.
08:59Thank you, Nick.
09:00Rachel, could I start with a consonant, please?
09:02Thank you, Natalie.
09:03W.
09:04And another.
09:07N.
09:07And a third.
09:11Q.
09:12A vowel, please.
09:14A.
09:15And another.
09:17I.
09:18And a third.
09:20E.
09:21And a fourth, please.
09:25O.
09:27Consonant.
09:29T.
09:30And a final consonant, please.

10:12A seven.
10:13Natalie.
10:14Entail.
10:15Entail and elation.
10:18Entail and elation.
10:20Yep, excellent.
10:21Now, Tanny, Susie?
10:24So there's another seven, which is toenail.
10:26Yes.
10:28Toenail.
10:29And toe line, which is another word for a toe rope.
10:33All right, indeed.
10:35Now, 21 plays ten, and it's Nick's letters game.
10:39Nick?
10:39I'll start with the consonant, please.
10:41Thank you, Nick.
10:42N.
10:43And another?
10:44T.
10:46And another?
10:48X.

11:13And the clock starts now.
11:15D.
11:16And a consonant?
11:47Yes, Nick.
11:48A risky eight.
11:50Natalie?
11:51A risky eight.
11:53All right.
11:54Nick?
11:55Under tax.
11:56Under tax and?
11:57Truanted.
12:00OK, I'll start with under tax.
12:05You, well, fortunately, I suppose, can't be under taxed in the dictionary anyway.
12:10But truanted, truant is there as a verb, and truanted is absolutely fine.
12:15Very, very well done.
12:15Well done.
12:18APPLAUSE
12:20Well done, Natalie.
12:2221 to 18.
12:24There's nothing in it.
12:25And it's Natalie's numbers game now.
12:28Natalie?
12:29Could I have one large, please, Rachel?
12:31You can indeed, thank you, Natalie.
12:32One large one.
12:33Five little ones this time.
12:34And these five little ones are eight, two, four, five, and six.
12:41And the large one, 25.
12:43And the target, 140.
12:45One, four, zero.
12:47More and Patreon, please.
13:17Natalie.
13:18Yes, 1, 4, 0.
13:201, 4, 0, Nick.
13:211, 4, 0 as well.
13:23So, Natalie.
13:24Yes.
13:24So, 25 times 6.
13:2625 by 6, 150.
13:28And then 5 times 2.
13:30Here's your 10.
13:31And take it away.
13:32Lovely, 140.
13:33Yep.
13:33And, Nick, just slightly different.
13:35I did 8 plus 2 to get the 10.
13:37Lovely.
13:38Great.
13:39There we go.
13:39So, 28, please.
13:4131.
13:42Still that same minimal difference as we turn to Tanny.
13:46And, Tanny, yesterday we talked about those extraordinary 11 gold medals.
13:51But is it true that the first is always the most delightful?
13:57The first is always this massive boost in your confidence.
14:01So, my first gold medal actually came at my second games, which was Barcelona, in 1992.
14:06So, I'd gone into the games ranked number one in the world in the four distances I competed.
14:11But, again, you never quite know what's going to happen.
14:15And so, I won my first medal, do the lap of honour.
14:18It's an incredible feeling.
14:19And back then, we didn't have mobile phones.
14:21So, my father and my sister were there watching me compete.
14:24Mum hated watching me race, so never came to a race.
14:27So, I kind of found enough coins, went and found a paved phone, rang her.
14:31And she was sort of slightly dismissive and slightly cool towards me.
14:34And I didn't want to say, I just won a gold medal.
14:36And in the heats, I broke a world record.
14:38And she was like, yeah, that's fine.
14:39But what you also did was, as I was going onto the track, I was quite nervous.
14:43So, I'd taken a mouthful of water and spat it out on the track.
14:48And my mother told me that she didn't care whether I won a gold medal or broke a world record
14:52or whatever I did, that I should never, ever spit in front of a camera.
14:58And that was a very important lesson.
15:00The other thing she did to me from those games, I used to have a bob and big glasses.
15:04They were fashionable at the time, I think.
15:07And my mum used to call me Olive because she told me I look like Olive from On the Buses,
15:11which I don't think is very nice, really.
15:15So, my family were great.
15:18So, to this day, I still have family members who call me Olive.
15:21So, I'm trying to think of a more romantic reason why I'm a gold olive, not that I look like
15:24Olive from On the Buses.
15:25Lovely.
15:26So, they were spinning past, looking like Olive, but spitting.
15:31Mum was furious.
15:33Absolutely.
15:33She didn't speak to me for days because she thought that was the worst thing I could ever do.
15:37Yeah.
15:38How funny.
15:39How funny.
15:40Lovely story.
15:41Lovely story.
15:45No spitting is the rule.
15:47Nick on 31, Natalie on 28, and it's Nick's letters game.
15:51Nick.
15:53Consonant, please.
15:54Thank you, Nick.
15:55M.
15:56And another.
15:59S.
15:59And a vowel.
16:01A.
16:02And a consonant.
16:04P.
16:05And a vowel.
16:08E.
16:09Consonant.
16:11K.
16:12A consonant.
16:14T.
16:15A consonant.
16:17H.
16:19And a consonant, please.
16:21I just need a third vowel, I'm afraid.
16:23I'm going to adjudicate, step in with an I.
16:27Countdown.

20:55The infected wound definitely gave him concern.
21:14Welcome back.
21:15I left you with the clue.
21:16The infected wound definitely gave him concern.
21:19And the answer is mattered.
21:23And Susie, I guess it's not that it mattered, but that matter has a medical sort of value.
21:28It does.
21:29It's not very pleasant.
21:30It's to secrete or discharge pus of a wound.
21:35It's mostly American and it's quite rare, thankfully, what at least the word is.
21:39But yeah, that's one sense of the word.
21:40It's matter.
21:41Yeah.
21:43So 53 to 41.
21:44And it is Natalie's letters again.

25:01Thank you very much indeed.
25:03Natalie, still six points ahead, 60 plays 54.
25:08As we turn now to Susie and her wonderful origins of words.
25:14What have we got today, Susie?
25:16Well, I talked yesterday a little bit about the presidential election in the US and terms
25:23that surround the American political elections because their lexicon is actually very different
25:28to ours.
25:29And you might have heard of the term gerrymandering, which is adjusting the boundaries of a particular
25:35constituency in order to favour a particular party.
25:37Really serious business, but came about in a surprisingly offhand way back in the 19th century
25:43when the governor of Massachusetts, Elbridge Gerry, created a new voting district that moved
25:49the previous boundaries to favour his democratic party.
25:54And according to a source of the time, he had a decorator in his office who was painting the walls.
25:58And he pointed out that the outline of Gerry's new territory on the map looked just like a salamander.
26:05His name was Elbridge Gerry, as I say, was the governor, and he had the salamander.
26:11And so they put the two together to make gerrymander.
26:13So it's quite rare to be able to pinpoint the origin of a word and certainly to, you know,
26:19to get the actual creator.
26:21But that's how gerrymandering was born.
26:23But canvassing also goes on.
26:25It happens here, as you will know, Tani, in the House of Lords.
26:30And it happens in the US inevitably as well.
26:32That has a slightly surprising origin.
26:34It comes ultimately from the Latin cannabis, meaning hemp.
26:38And that was the basis of canvas as well, canvas cloth.
26:42And in the early 16th century, the verb to canvas actually meant to toss somebody in a sheet of canvas,
26:48either as a punishment or as part of a game.
26:52What it could also mean to sort of sift ingredients in a sheet of canvas.
26:55And from that idea, it came to mean to discuss issues, usually quite hotly, quite vehemently,
27:00and then to propose an issue and finally to propose something for discussion or to seek support for a particular
27:07thing.
27:08So canvas has come an extremely long way, going all the way back to the Romans,
27:11who had their fair share of canvassing, of course, too.
27:14Indeed. Well done.
27:19Well, brilliant stuff there, Susie. Thank you.
27:22Now, 60 plays 54. Natalie on 60. And it's Natalie's letters game now.
