00:32Good afternoon, and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:35Now, over the years, there have been fads and crazes.
00:37They come and go. That's the point of a fad or a craze.
00:40Well, last month, a craze of all crazes swept the world.
00:45It's called Pokemon Go, and players capture virtual little sort of creatures on their phones in different locations.
00:53And apparently, Rachel, I mean, I don't understand this thing, although somebody tried to show me earlier today.
00:58It's gone bonkers. It's huge.
01:01Let me give you some instances.
01:03A man in New Zealand, I mean, you've got to be potty.
01:06A man in New Zealand gave up his job to concentrate full time on chasing down the creatures.
01:12People in Bosnia have been warned not to stare at their phones and follow these things, follow the trail, and
01:20meander into a minefield.
01:22And the chaotic situation in New York Central Park was really quite extraordinary, because people abandoned their cars to hunt
01:30for them.
01:30I mean, it really is extraordinary.
01:32We've all been swept up in crazes, but what about you?
01:34What crazes were you swept up in?
01:37Well, I'll just count down.
01:38Just count down every day after school.
01:41It continues, 33 years or whatever it is on.
01:43It all, I think, revolves around collecting, doesn't it?
01:47Now, let's see somebody who's collected something yesterday by way of a teapot.
01:51Why?
01:52Natalie Mitali is back.
01:53Well done.
01:54You had a good old win yesterday, 84 to 71.
01:57Slow start.
01:57But, you know, you're a bit nervous to begin with.
01:59My word, you weren't nervous at the end.
02:01Yeah, still nervous.
02:03Well, you tell John McDonnell not to be nervous.
02:06He's here a retired construction worker from Kilsyth in Scotland.
02:10Whereabouts in Scotland is Kilsyth?
02:12It's just northeast of Glasgow, about 10 miles outside.
02:18OK.
02:18Now, you used to watch Countdown with your granny.
02:22Uh-huh.
02:22What happened there?
02:23A little story, I'm told.
02:25Well, yeah, I used to come at...
02:26Countdown would be on at half past four, I believe, at the time.
02:29I used to come in from work and watch it with my gran.
02:33And we'd been watching for about three months.
02:36And she suddenly said to me,
02:38John, what's a consonant?
02:42I was like, well, A, you know...
02:45Yeah, anything isn't about it.
02:47That's it.
02:47Yeah, exactly.
02:48Well done.
02:49Big round of applause for John and Natalie.
02:55Well done.
02:57Very good fun.
02:57And over in the corner, of course, Susie.
02:59Joined once again by Baroness Tanny Gray-Thompson.
03:01Tanny Gray-Thompson, welcome back.

04:28Susie?
04:29Good Malay word, that, Sarong, but you could put the S on, Natalie.
04:32You could have had more than one Sarong.
04:35There's also Parsons for seven.
04:38Yes.
04:38Parsons.
04:39Anything else?
04:41Like Natalie, Sarong.
04:42Sarong.

06:06Advisor.
06:08Yes.
06:09Yes, you can have advisor or advisal.
06:12Either he's absolutely fine.
06:13Can we beat it in the corner?
06:15I had advisor.
06:17Yeah.
06:17But that was the best I could do.
06:19Yeah, the sevens misread, admires.
06:22One eight that we could find was disarmed.
06:25Disarmed?
06:26Yeah.
06:27Very good.
06:31All right.
06:32Early lead for Natalie.
06:33Pension time to go, though.
06:35And it's Natalie's numbers game.
06:37One large, please.
06:39Thank you, Natalie.
06:40One from the top and five, Littlands.
06:42And the five small ones are ten, two, nine, six, and seven.

06:51And the target, one hundred and ninety-five.
06:54One nine five.

07:26Natalie.
07:271-9-4.
07:291-0-8, John.
07:301-9-5.
07:32John.
07:337 times 25.
07:361-7-5.
07:372 times 10.
07:39Yeah, I think that's the nerves there.
07:43Very good.
07:47So, three-point lead, therefore, for John.
07:5016 to 13, as we turn to our first tea-time teaser,
07:53which is India Jam.
07:54And the clue, John often thought of everyone living in peace.
07:59John often thought of everyone living in peace.
08:18Welcome back.
08:19I left you with the clue, John often thought of everyone living in peace.
08:23And the answer, of course, is imagined.
08:26Imagined.
08:27There we go, from the late, great John Lennon.
08:3016 points to John.

11:25Natalie?
11:27Five.
11:28Five.
11:29John?
11:31Five.
11:33Natalie?
11:34Troll.
11:35And John?
11:36I'm sorry, I flushed it.
11:39Bad luck.
11:40What have we got in the corner?
11:42Well, the best for six was atonal.
11:46Atonal, yes.
11:47Yes.
11:47A-tonal, not written in any key or mode if you're talking about music.
11:51It's a-tonal.
11:51A-tonal, yeah.
11:54Twenty-five, please.
11:54Sixteen, and John, it's numbers time for you.
11:59Three large, please, and three small.
12:01Thank you, John.
12:02Three from the top, both three little ones.
12:05And this time around, your little ones are ten, one, and another one.
12:10And the last one's one hundred, fifty, seventy-five.
12:14And the target, four hundred and thirty-four.
12:17Four, three, four.
12:18Four, three, three, five, four, five.
12:23And, I'm sorry, I took theicals and three.
12:31One, two, three, five.
12:48Let's do it now.
12:48Two, three, three, four.
12:48Five, four.
12:50John 47 Natalie 436 436 all right so naturally okay so I did 50 times 10 50 times 10 500
13:04oh sorry I have to see this gun I thought I thought I saw an 11 there ah right okay
13:14the
13:14ones I did four at 500 take away 75 425 and then I thought it was 11 for the full
13:19things
13:19ah you put the ones together bad luck sorry this is John McDonald's chance John um 10 times 50 yes
13:28500 minus 75 425 plus the two ones yep 427 seven away 427 but 434 how tricky is it um
13:42I found one
13:42way if you say 50 plus 1 is 51 10 minus the other one is 9 times them together for
13:50459 and then 100
13:53minus 75 is 25 and take it away 434 well done well done very good so Natalie's lead has been
14:04reduced
14:04somewhat down to four points 25 to where John's 21 as we turn to Tani now Tani your daughter Karis
14:14is a teenager now and she's a sporty teenager well she is it would be quite hard actually for
14:20her to escape doing sport because my husband was a Paralympian as well um but one of the challenges
14:25when you're a female athlete competing if you want to have a baby is it's kind of time in it
14:30because everything we do is on a four-year cycle so you see most female athletes will have a baby
14:34straight after the Olympics or Paralympics so they can start training again so I tried to do that but
14:39I missed out slightly so she was born early in 2002 so I pretty much had to start training within
14:4510
14:46days of having her to be able to be back at Commonwealth Games so when she was baby it was
14:50all really simple you know just trekked around the world with a sticker and a pram when she grew a
14:54bit
14:54bigger we then used to dress her in a fluorescent baby grow and she used to crawl around the track
14:59and then when she was a bit bigger again we used to put her in the long jump pit with
15:02a bucket and
15:03spade and tell her it was the beach and so because she'd never been to a beach she thought that
15:09was
15:10the beach so every day you say to her do you want to go to the beach and she'd get
15:12bucket and spade
15:13and she'd build sand castles and we did have a little problem with her once where she did have a
15:17row with one of our long jumpers again she was about two and a half where she decided it was
15:21her
15:21sand not his and she didn't bury herself in the sand and we were sort of trying to drag her
15:27out
15:27and then sort of smooth out the sandcastle so as a result she she really doesn't like athletics very
15:32much so she does entirely different sports but so I think I've probably scarred her for life to be
15:39honest I'm sure you have not what what direction is she moving in now which sports have well she does
15:46whitewater slalom canoeing so she goes down sort of the Olympic course where the water moves at sort of
15:51nine tons a second and I think this is her payback because I don't like water and I don't like
15:58swimming pools I'm act to be fair I don't like puddles so there is this sort of thing where I
16:03think she's
16:03doing it because she knows I can never coach her and and she's quite stubborn I've no idea where she
16:08gets it from yeah well done lovely thank you Danny thank you very good now Natalie let us time thank
16:19you
16:19Nick could I have a consonant please Rachel thank you Natalie T and another P and a third ah

19:05Should we stick with John then? John? Touch her. Touch her? Touch her. Absolutely fine, yes,
19:13a personal thing that touches, but also involves a wood that touches the jack. Absolutely fine.
19:17Well, very good. And, Penny? There's also clothier. Yep. Yep. And you can push touch her to eight
19:26if you had the eye. Again, touchier is there. Touchier, yeah. Indeed. All right, so Natalie's
19:32just four in the lead now, 28 to Natalie's 32, and it's your numbers game. Natalie?
19:38One large ratio. Thank you, Natalie. One from the top row. And five little, no need to shake
19:43your head. Right, these five little ones are two, ten, three, one, seven, and the large one,
19:52twenty-five. And this target? Six hundred and fifty-nine. Six five nine.
19:57Six hundred and fifty-nine. Six hundred and fifty-nine. Six hundred and fifty-nine.
20:15Six hundred and fifty-nine. Six hundred and fifty-nine. Six hundred and fifty-nine.

20:51I'm afraid I'm sorry we're out of time what a shame what a shame
20:58come on Rachel spell it out for us six five nine um yep there were a couple of
21:04ways if you start this way you can take away the seven and the two four sixty six
21:09times it by ten six hundred and sixty and take away the one there we go bad luck
21:15John difference as we turn to our second tea time teaser which is lit coat and the
21:24clue it's nothing to do with clothes but my tie is connected to it it's nothing to

25:12we beat it no we can join them yeah in what way Mina MN Mimi you can be a
25:19meanie can get to the seven though I think there might be one there all
25:24right that'll do 45 days 34 Susie your origins of words what have you got for
25:31us today gonna revisit the the Romans I love to go back to the Roman world because
25:37they gave us so many words that their language Latin is behind so much of
25:41English and their words senex was it was the Latin for old and senators comes from
25:51at the Latin senex meaning an old man and of course their Senate was a revered
25:57council of elders people who were thought to be very wise and very experienced
26:02but young or old all senators have had their distinct protocols I should just
26:08say that the Roman Senate was an incredibly enduring institution at the
26:11most enduring of all Roman history it survived the fall of the Roman Empire
26:15and it's had a real power but protocol at that looks back to Greece rather to than
26:22to Romans and it looks back to their ancient word proto colon which meant the
26:26first leaf that was glued to the front of a manuscript with an index of the
26:30contents at written upon it says protoss meaning first and then collar which
26:35meant to glue so it was literally sheet of paper that listed everything that was
26:39about to follow that column meaning glue is behind collagen collage collate all
26:45sorts of words in English as a protocol came to mean a draft that lay down the
26:49outline or a summary from which an official treaty or a document was
26:53eventually drawn and then the meaning was extended to and the rules of etiquette
26:57or standard for any formal occasion and etiquette as I explained on the show
27:02quite recently was originally a ticket or label particularly in French courtly
27:06society that list all the ceremonial observances that visitors to the king
27:10or queen had to adhere to in order to and to respect the monarchy
27:21really wonderful as always fantastic 45 days 34 naturally in the lead at the
