The Atlanta Falcons face off against the 6-0 San Francisco 49ers, bringing former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and former defensive coordinator Raheem Morris back to town. Steak Shapiro and Sandra Golden discuss why Atlanta might actually be a great play despite recent struggles, how Raheem Morris will plan to put pressure on quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and whether Falcons fans would ever take Shanahan back after Super Bowl LI.

00:00So the 49ers are coming to town, and nobody can understand,
00:03and I shouldn't say nobody.
00:04A lot of folks don't seem to understand.
00:07You have it at Bovada at three right now,
00:09that the San Francisco 49ers are 6-0.
00:15They have the best record, along with a number of teams, undefeated,
00:18about four undefeated teams.
00:20There's four or five undefeated teams, Chiefs, Vikings, 49ers.
00:24Who am I leaving out in terms of undefeateds?
00:28But there's three.
00:30Three, I got it.
00:33Why are we only getting a field goal?
00:36Did you not watch us against the backup quarterback, Snoop Hundley, of the Ravens?
00:42We lost that game.
00:44Did you not see us against Caleb Williams and the Bears,
00:48who by no means have been lighting it up this year?
00:50I mean, they've had some good weeks, but they also were the worst team of the week
00:54the week before against Green Bay where they got blown out of the gym
00:57or the, you know, Lambo.
01:00Did you not watch our first two games where we were humiliated by Carolina
01:05and where we went to Pittsburgh and you couldn't get out of our own way?
01:08Granted, it was Cooper Rush.
01:09Like, how does a 2-4 team play a 6-0 team and have many of the sharps thinking that
01:17Atlanta
01:18is a good play?
01:20Because I'm not a sharp, but I think Atlanta is a good play.
01:25I think that they're on a short week.
01:27I think that they've got injuries.
01:29Mike Evans, the biggest at the top of it.
01:31I don't think he's going to go.
01:32Not five days later after that Achilles, right?
01:35You know, it's a good way to really screw your season up, have that Achilles turn into
01:38a full-blown, blown-out Achilles, and he's out for the year.
01:42And the Falcons should play desperate, like they did, with an incredible sense of urgency
01:48when they went to Green Bay on a Thursday night and everybody's like,
01:52we are done with this franchise.
01:54We just spent money, and the Carolina Panthers came in here and treated us like a lost puppy
02:04dog that's been kicked down the street, right?
02:07Just like you're no factor.
02:09And then they came out against Green Bay, and they had 194 yards from Bajon on the ground,
02:13they had 194 yards from Drake, and they just smoked the Packers.
02:17And then they go to Katrina game in New Orleans, and they smoked the Saints.
02:20And then all of a sudden, our city's like, we can win the division, we can host a playoff
02:25game, our offense is dynamic, look at these new receivers, we got Dotson and Branch and
02:33Zaccheaus, and we got Kyle back and Drake back, and Bajon back, and Brian Robinson's ridiculous,
02:38whatever.
02:39We deal with the overreaction that everybody does in every town, in every sports city,
02:43in every sports radio station.
02:45And now we're back down to earth with two miserable losses.
02:49And now the best team in football comes in, and we're only getting three points.
02:54I think the Falcons are in a great place.
02:56But I want to talk about who's coming to town, and not just, you know, a talented 49ers team
03:02with Brock Purdy, who's looked great so far.
03:05It's Kyle Shanahan.
03:07Brock Purdy is in the MVP conversation with Kenneth Walker.
03:10Boy, does he look smooth.
03:11He looks good, and he looks confident.
03:13And we all know his story, right?
03:15So Kyle Shanahan is coming back to town.
03:21And when you have a seismic, a franchise, city-altering game like our Super Bowl, you know,
03:35there's like a life before the Super Bowl collapse, and there's life after.
03:38And life after the collapse has been extremely rough, and we all want to blame somebody.
03:43We all want to talk about Falcons are cursed.
03:45We all want to talk about, you know, that our defense caved in.
03:51We had no answers.
03:52Maybe we want to talk about Matt Ryan not checking down.
03:55But predominantly 80% to 90% of folks want to blame Kyle Shanahan.
04:00After the Julio Jones catch, you are three running plays away in a field goal from winning the Super Bowl.
04:05There's just not enough time left for New England to be able to come back at that point.
04:09So everybody turns to the fact that, you know, you got behind the sticks because of a penalty,
04:17and then you got a sack, and next thing you know, you're out of field goal range,
04:21and all you needed to do was just run the ball three times and turn to your kicker.
04:25Okay.
04:25Hey, there's a million plays in the Super Bowl, and Kyle Shanahan was being aggressive like he always is,
04:35and it was ill-advised, and it blew up in his face.
04:42But to sit here and say that he's like the number one villain,
04:46you take Kyle Shanahan as an offensive coordinator back here,
04:50you would drive to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
04:53If you don't drive, you'd rent a car to go get him.
04:57And by the way, if he wanted a luxury vehicle, you'd probably borrow one.
05:01So Kyle Shanahan might be the best coach in the National Football League.
05:04And to say he's our number one villain, okay, I don't have the energy for that.
05:09Is Kyle Shanahan smug?
05:11Absolutely check.
05:12Is Kyle Shanahan smarmy?
05:15Check.
05:16He's that.
05:17Is Kyle Shanahan the guy that in the post-game party when you lost the Super Bowl,
05:23according to our buddy Brian Finneran, was smiling and hanging out with his wife
05:27because he knew he was about to hit a massive payday, right?
05:30He's got the 49er job already.
05:32But I just don't have it in me to be like, I loathe that guy.
05:38Remember Kyle Shanahan, the most petty thing I ever saw from him.
05:41Do you remember we were all talking about why didn't you get Roddy White the ball?
05:43And then he comes out and he throws it to Roddy three plays in a row just to give a
05:47middle finger to the fans.
05:47That's exactly right.
05:48And it was like, boy, that's an immature thing to do.
05:51That's a juvenile way to handle your business.
05:56But here's what else I see.
05:57Goes to the playoffs every year.
05:59Understands offenses.
06:00Has a team that plays with discipline.
06:03I mean, you know, like he's coming back to town and Raheem's coming back to town because he's the defensive
06:10coordinator.
06:10And maybe, Sandra, it's just like going to a wedding and running into your ex or multiple exes.
06:17It just gives you a weird feeling sometimes.
06:20Maybe you're single and now you're looking at you're at this event and you look over and it's like, wow,
06:26she seems really happy.
06:27We're still over here.
06:29We're miserable.
06:30Nothing good has happened.
06:30I think the greater question is, is would you take him back?
06:33And the answer is 1,000% yes.
06:35Yeah, both of us would say it.
06:36So I just did a chat of like, could you tell me some things the NFL players say, the other
06:41coaches say, the owners say about Kyle Shanahan.
06:44And it's the most respected, you know, he and Sean McVay are like best friends.
06:49They were part of that commander's staff that went.
06:52And what he does, according to his players, is he's the most consistent in the building and he has the
06:57ability to change things quickly.
06:59So if they can spot a problem, he immediately can make it right.
07:03I mean, Matt Ryan was the MVP under Kyle Shanahan.
07:05Our offense is the reason.
07:07It's not like our defense in any of the Matt Ryan years was the reason behind any success.
07:13It was the offense.
07:14Here's Tony Gonzalez and here's Roddy White and here's Devontae Freeman and here's Austin Hooper and here's Julio Jones and
07:21here's Kyle Shanahan calling plays for them.
07:23And like, it all worked.
07:26So I know you're angry.
07:27We want to blame somebody for the Super Bowl.
07:29It's a collective, you know, I mean, not a lot to blame Matt Ryan for.
07:35Even the blitz that he took at the end of the game there.
07:38Somebody had to have a wherewithal.
07:39And this is where Matt Ryan, to me, gets a lot of criticism in terms of when they were snapping
07:44the ball down the stretch.
07:45And I believe it went something like 13, 9, 16 seconds.
07:50Do you know what I'm talking about?
07:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:52You've talked about it for years.
07:53Why did you not run that clock down?
07:54The Patriots were almost completely out of time.
07:58Yep.
07:58Even if they, even if we, again, didn't score, they were almost completely out of time if you'd run the
08:04clock down.
08:04Listen, I know it's painful.
08:05People in the cars are like, why are you guys rehashing the Super Bowl?
08:08You know, so the blame could go around.
08:10We take Kyle Shanahan here in two seconds and get over it.
08:13Right?
08:13We take him as a head coach.
08:15We take him as a coordinator.
08:15He has gone to San Francisco and run an airtight operation.
08:21Right?
08:21And they're coming in here.
08:22I mean, the number of times he's not only been in the NFC Championship game, but to the Super Bowl
08:27twice, both lost to the Chiefs, but literally lost the NFC Championship in the NFC Championship game in the wild
08:35card.
08:35It's remarkable what he's done.
08:37And to start out 6-0.
08:38And over the last three years, the San Francisco 49ers have the most injuries in the NFL.
08:45So for him to do what he's doing.
08:48Yeah.
08:48I find it interesting, though, the connection with Raheem because it's so incestuous in the NFL that he would have
08:54hired Raheem.
08:55Yeah.
08:56That's the other factor.
08:57I think Raheem is considered an absolute top-tier defensive coordinator.
09:03Right?
09:03Wherever Raheem has been a coordinator, they've had great success.
09:06Yes, he was unemployed for three seconds, it seemed like, and he got the job in San Francisco.
09:11And by all indications, they're undefeated.
09:14They put an incredible amount of pressure on quarterbacks.
09:17And he's coming back also.
09:19How do people feel about Raheem coming back here?
09:21What do you think that percent?
09:23Well, I think we loved Raheem until we didn't love Raheem.
09:27Right.
09:27It got old quickly, and we didn't win.
09:29So there was that.
09:30But I always worry about the revenge factor and Raheem.
09:34Like, oh, they showed me the door.
09:35Yeah.
09:36And Kyle and him, the tendencies that they know about our players.
09:40Well, that I totally agree with.
09:42Raheem Morris coached Michael Penix Jr.
09:45He coached Kyle Pitts.
09:47He knows Kyle Pitts' limitations.
09:49One would argue, you know, energy sometimes.
09:53Or, like, you know, completely going all out to make stuff happen.
09:58Right?
09:59And I know he had the two touchdowns.
10:01But, you know, he's had a mediocre season at best.
10:04I think Raheem, and listen, everybody knows that Raheem knows better than anybody else.
10:09He looks at Michael Penix.
10:10He coached Michael Penix.
10:12He watched Michael Penix be injured.
10:14And he was watching film and going like, dude, all we have to do is put pressure on him.
10:18Like, it's not complicated.
10:19If you put pressure on Michael Penix, A, he's tentative.
10:22B, he can't move right now.
10:23Like, he just doesn't move well.
10:25So, I coached this guy, Raheem Morris, telling his defense, just get after this guy.
10:29I know it sounds rudimentary.
10:32And it's not like Kevin Stefanski and everybody doesn't know.
10:34Oh, yeah, we know their game plan.
10:36They watched the Ravens.
10:37And they watched this week against the Bears.
10:41And they're going to put pressure.
10:42But I would say you're right.
10:43Raheem Morris is coming in here desperately.
10:47Maybe he was shown the door in two years.
10:50Two years is about as short as it gets for an NFL coach.
10:53Right?
10:55But I don't have...
10:56And we're hiring a consultant that came in and said this management group...
11:00He had no focus.
11:02Yeah, Matt Ryan's here because Raheem Morris is failing.
11:04Yeah.
11:05Matt Ryan left CBS because Raheem Morris fell on his face.
11:09And Terry Fontenot fell on his face.
11:11That's why.
11:12I don't know if you guys have thoughts on either one of those guys.
11:15I got more important things to put my energy towards.
11:18And that's just find a way to get a W.
11:20404-726-0929.
11:23404-726-0929.
11:26I think you're talking everybody into picking the San Francisco 49ers.
11:31When you think about Raheem and that defense.
11:33I'm looking at Brock Purdy who currently has the highest rated passer in NFL history.
11:40He's 21 or 29, 264.
11:44He passed the 1500...
11:45That was last week, you mean.
11:46No, but his career...
11:47Listen to this.
11:47Passing the 1500 attempt threshold to qualify for those numbers.
11:50He has a 105-6 rating, which is ahead of Lamar Jackson's.
11:55Okay.
11:55He's a really good quarterback.
11:57I get it.
11:58Then why is it spread three?
11:59You think Vegas doesn't know what they're doing?
12:01I think somebody was drinking.
12:03I don't understand this at all.
12:04You think everybody in Vegas is drinking?
12:05Well, actually, they are.
