00:01An investigation into human rights violations at the controversial Italian migrant centers
00:07established in Albania has won an EU journalism prize. The investigation was published by Dutch
00:14outlet Correspondent in January. It puts into question the legality of the two centers that
00:20opened in 2024 and were built to accommodate asylum seekers rescued at sea while Italian
00:27authorities reviewed their applications. Following repeated legal setbacks, Giorgia Maloney's
00:34government repurposed the centers in March of 2025 to detain irregular migrants already in Italy
00:40ahead of their deportation to their countries of origin. The report documented violations of
00:47fundamental rights and European law in the treatment of migrants in their transfer to the centers.
00:52The centers have become a model for European migration policy as several countries seek
00:58to create return hubs and the report now issues a warning on the new EU policy on migration.
