00:00Le federal MP Helen Haynes remains in a critical condition,
00:03losing both legs following an attack outside her Wangaratta electorate office.
00:08Last night, her community came together for a highly emotional vigil
00:12to show their support for the Haynes family and take a stand against violence.
00:17Jordan Quinn has the latest from Northern Victoria.
00:21Good afternoon.
00:22Well, this showing of love and support for Helen Haynes
00:25outside her electorate office here in Wangaratta
00:28has grown exponentially over the last few days.
00:32Locals are still streaming in with flowers and kind messages
00:36for the MP who still remains in the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne
00:40in a critical condition.
00:42Last night, 45 minutes away in Wodonga, a huge part of her electorate,
00:46hundreds of residents gathered for a moving vigil.
00:50For locals, it was a time to reflect about how much Helen means to the community
00:54and how much she has done for it.
00:56We also heard from the former member for Indy, Cathy McGowan, Helen's predecessor.
01:02She said she mentored Helen as she entered politics,
01:05but that relationship soon flipped.
01:08Cathy was left in awe of Helen's character.
01:10I'm incredibly sad and disheartened,
01:13but also I'm going to welcome the next bit,
01:16that Helen's going to get better,
01:17that she'll come home and that our community will do something.
01:20This community was crying out for a mechanism by which we could show support
01:26for Helen Haynes and her family
01:28under the most challenging and confronting circumstances.
01:31And it's incredible to see this community come together like it has this afternoon,
01:36showing that support for Helen,
01:38but also as a stand against violence
01:41and also a call out for how we do civil democracy in this country.
01:46Last night, Wodonga's water tower was lit up in white lights
01:50as a showing of support and solidarity.
01:53But instead of flowers and gifts,
01:55Helen's family has asked the public for donations
01:57to the Save the Children organisation,
02:00which so far has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.
