00:00There's no question that the most buzzed about movie right now is the Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything.
00:08And there is no hotter directing duo than the directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.
00:15But in the last week, a scandal has started to envelop Oppenheim, who is just 30 years old and is
00:22emerging as one of the most popular and talented directors working in Hollywood today.
00:26When Oppenheim was at university, he approached a group of filmmakers who make what are called mitigation films.
00:36And Oppenheim told this group that he wanted to do a student project.
00:42Now, mitigation films are a subgenre of films about, you can think of them as sort of small documentaries about
00:50people who have been convicted of very serious crimes.
00:53And these films are meant to humanize these people, to try and lessen the sentences that they're going to be
00:59facing from judges and from federal prosecutors.
01:03Now, Oppenheim was interested in this world and he approached them and he gained access to this community of people.
01:11And this exact same community of people are now accusing Oppenheim of misrepresenting what he was there to do and
01:21of actually taking proprietary footage and using it for his movie, which he then sold to the New York Times.
01:28Oppenheim's team and the New York Times have told me that the project was totally above board and that the
01:36footage that he used was what's called fair use, which means anyone could actually use it.
01:42The advocacy group of mitigation filmmakers, led by a woman named Kate Carter, they say otherwise.
01:48They say Oppenheim downloaded this footage from a protected website and actually stole the footage to boost his profile and
01:58make some money by selling this product that he told them was a student film and then ended up on
02:03the homepage of the New York Times.
02:05It's a classic he said versus she said, but in the case of Lance Oppenheim, it seems unlikely that this
02:12is going to derail the career of somebody who seems headed for total stardom.
