Forest fires threaten world's oldest cave paintings in Indonesia's Sulawesi
The world's oldest cave paintings on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi are under threat of wildfires as heat and smoke particles could hasten the degradation rate of the paintings created between thousands of years ago, researchers said. While the island of Sumatra and Borneo are the worst-affected by the disaster, fire was also detected on the island of Sulawesi, including in South Sulawesi where limestone caves house world's oldest prehistoric art. Fire on the Maros-Pangkep area reached a few meters out of the cave mouth, said Griffith University archaeologist Basran Burhan.
