Pluto’s heart-shaped region contains a vast plain of nitrogen ice patterned with giant polygons. Models based on New Horizons data suggest slow convection: warmer solid ice rises, cools near the surface and sinks at the edges. This process can refresh the icy landscape over geological time. The ice remains solid as it slowly deforms.
