Terra Told's HISTORY'S TURNING POINTS documentary series continues with the Tower of Babel — the real seven-terraced tower of Babylon, its true name Etemenanki, and why the confusion of languages probably never happened the way the story says.
The Louvre's Esagila tablet gives the tower's real Sumerian name and measurements: a 91-meter square base rising in seven terraces. But engineers say mudbrick could never have stood that tall. The city's own name hides a bilingual pun — Bab-ilu, "gate of god," became balal, "he confused" — likely written by Judean exiles staring at the tower every day. A thousand years earlier, a Sumerian epic had already told the one-language dream. And when Alexander the Great tried to rebuild the ruin, he died before a single new brick was laid. The prisoners named it — and their word outlived the empire.
