N159 is a star-forming region 161,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way. In this new Webb telescope Picture of the Month (October 2026), spanning about 230 light-years across, giant clouds of gas collapse under gravity while massive, hot, young stars switch on — their fierce stellar winds sculpting ridges and carving cavities in the glowing gas. It is a turbulent cauldron of star formation: beautiful and violent at once. And every bright point is a star beginning its life.

N159 is an H II region of ionised hydrogen gas, and it is distinct from NGC 7129, a different stellar nursery.
