Did you know that next year there is planned a “2027 Planetary Defense Conference” based around a hypothetical impact threat? It’s comforting to know there is a conference being held to defend our planet. It’s not enough that every country has to constantly buy new defensive weapons to protect themselves from all the other countries that recently bought deadlier defense weapons just the year before. But in addition to that we have to prepare to defend our planet from a hypothetical impact threat!
Is it possible that we may have to nuke an incoming comet or asteroid? Well, yes, it is possible. The earth has been hit by objects from outer space in the past and it is possible that our peaceful planet may be threatened again in the future. So, in addition to buying more and more defensive weapons we may have to also defend ourselves from an aggressive planet in the future.
But what about the Bible? What does the Bible say about a future impact from an asteroid or comet?
Rev 8:10-11 10 Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.
So and impact from a comet or asteroid in the future is a guarantee. And it won’t be stopped by the solutions reached by a Planetary Defense Conference. It’s going to happen; but when? The Bible gives us some clues.

00:04Greetings, friends. This is Steve Dupuy for the Bible News Prophecy Program with Dr. Bob Thiel,
00:10bringing you news and analysis of world events in light of Bible prophecy. Dr. Thiel, we recently
00:16had a meteor shower where I live, which got me wondering, should we be expecting an impact from
00:23some outer space object? Yes, and Michael Snyder actually was wondering about that himself.
00:31And let me read you a headline that he posted a couple days ago. Why are scientists suddenly so
00:38concerned about an asteroid hitting Earth? Does it have no sense when we don't know? Anyway, the
00:44article starts off with, authorities assure us that we're perfectly safe. No giant space rocks are
00:51heading our way. If that's true, why is a scenario that's been developed by the 2027 Planetary Defense
00:59Conference based around a hypothetical impact threat from a very large asteroid? And why are
01:06scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory studying how to destroy a great
01:12giant asteroid that's heading toward the Earth using nuclear weapons? If there's no threat anywhere on
01:17the horizon, wouldn't you think those scientists would have something better to do with their time?
01:23Then he continues with, on top of everything else, NASA recently concluded a secretive operation known as
01:31OSIRIS-REx, in which a spacecraft, this is an asteroid, plucked off a piece of it and returned it to
01:37Earth.
01:39While the general public's being told that we're safe for decades to come.
01:43A tremendous amount of time, money, and energy is being poured into preparing for potential asteroid threat.
01:50Do they know something the rest of us do not know?
01:54Now, to answer that last question, you know, basically, scientists see lots of objects in the
01:59space, and they know some have hit the Earth in the past.
02:03They suspect others will in the future.
02:06And they know, by the way, sometimes asteroids or comets appear or they change projectories.
02:11Sometimes they find one they never knew was out there.
02:14So they're looking at possible, you know, human options, what to do.
02:19Now, throughout the past couple of decades,
02:22I've denounced various ones who've asserted that some type of asteroid or comet was about to strike the Earth
02:28within weeks or months to fulfill what would be called the Wormwood Prophecy.
02:33And most of them were Protestant ministers of various types.
02:38Why did you denounce those various predictions?
02:42Well, because this object that the Bible calls Wormwood can't hit for some time.
02:49Now, over 1900 years ago, the Apostle John was inspired to write about Wormwood and more in the Book of
02:57Revelation.
02:58And if you look at the sequence of events that precede Wormwood, it's obvious that all these can't happen for
03:04several years.
03:07Please describe these sequences of events for us.
03:11Well, I'm going to go to Matthew 24, because Jesus listed events we need to pay attention to.
03:17And here's some of his prophecies, starting in verse 11.
03:21It said, many false prophets will arise up and deceive many.
03:25Well, we've seen that.
03:27Verse 12, and because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.
03:32We've been seeing that as well.
03:35Verse 13, but he who endures the end shall be saved.
03:38So the end's not here yet.
03:40Verse 14, and this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the worlds as a witness to all
03:45the nations,
03:46and then the end will come.
03:48Therefore, when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place,
03:54let him who reads understand.
03:58Now, we have not seen the fulfillment of verses 14 and 15.
04:03We have not seen this abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place.
04:09So why is that important?
04:11Because look at something else Jesus said, starting in verse 21.
04:15This happens after those things, which haven't happened yet.
04:19For then there'll be great tribulation, such as not been since the beginning of the world until this time,
04:24known or ever shall be.
04:26And unless those days are shortened, no flesh would be saved.
04:30But for the elect's sake, those days will be shortened.
04:33Now, if you drop down to verse 29, Jesus then says,
04:38immediately after the tribulation of those days,
04:42the sun's going to be darkened, the moon won't give its light,
04:46stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
04:50What's the relevance of those verses in Wormwood?
04:54Well, there's a tie to what Jesus said then in the events of the book of Revelation.
05:01Before Wormwood, we have to see the opening of all seven seals in the book of Revelation.
05:07And as of this time, at the most, three may have started to be open.
05:11We're at least three and a half years from the opening of the fifth seal of Revelation 6-9,
05:16which starts what Jesus referred to as a great tribulation in Matthew 24-21.
05:23Now, I want to go to Revelation 6 and look at the opening of the sixth seal.
05:31Verse 12, John says,
05:34I looked, and when he opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake.
05:39And the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.
05:44And the stars of heaven fell to the earth as a fig tree drops its late figs when shaken by
05:49a mighty wind.
05:50Then the sky receded as a scroll when it's rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of
05:56its place.
05:58Now, these events of the sixth seal tie in with what Jesus said would happen after the tribulation.
06:05And Wormwood doesn't start until after the seventh seal is opened.
06:11Now, let's look at the first nine verses of the book of Revelation, which starts with the opening of the
06:18seventh seal.
06:19Remember, the fifth's not open yet, nor is the fourth or the sixth.
06:24Anyway, Revelation 8, verse 1.
06:27And when he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about a half hour.
06:33There's some kind of a pause.
06:36And John says,
06:37I saw seven angels who stand before God, and they were given seven trumpets.
06:43Then another angel was given a golden censer and came and stood at the altar.
06:48He was given much incense that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden
06:53altar, which was before the throne.
06:56And the smoke and the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel's hand.
07:02Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth.
07:08There were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.
07:11Verse 6.
07:12So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
07:18Verse 7.
07:19Then the first angel sounded.
07:21Hail and fire followed, mingled with blood.
07:24And they were thrown to the earth.
07:26And a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.
07:30Again, all this is before Wyrmwood.
07:32Verse 8.
07:33Then the second angel sounded.
07:35And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea.
07:39And a third of the sea became blood.
07:41And a third of the living creatures in the sea died.
07:43And a third of the ships were destroyed.
07:48So we have the seventh seal opened in the sound of two trumpets.
07:52When does something from outer space strike the earth?
07:57Well, it's after these other things are fulfilled that we have the third angel sound, and Wyrmwood
08:04is mentioned.
08:04So Revelation 6 again.
08:07Now we'll go to verse 10.
08:09Then the third angel sounded.
08:11So again, there's a sequence here.
08:13The Bible's clear.
08:14Look at this, and this, and this, and this.
08:16And what happens?
08:17And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers
08:24and on the springs of water.
08:26The name of the star is Wyrmwood.
08:29A third of the waters became Wyrmwood, and many men died from the water because it was made bitter.
08:36Now notice that Wyrmwood doesn't fall until after the third trumpet associated with the
08:42seventh seal of Revelation is blown.
08:44Well, this would mean that the fourth, fifth, and sixth seals would already have to be opened,
08:50which are mentioned in Revelation 6, verses 7 to 17.
08:54And the number of 144,000 are to be sealed as shown in Revelation 7.
09:01What is Wyrmwood anyway?
09:04Well, Wyrmwood, even though it's not about to hit right now, it does exist, but it can't hit for
09:11several years at the earliest because it happens after the tribulation, not until after the third
09:17trumpet is blown.
09:18Now, I want to comment.
09:20That doesn't mean we can't have problems from meteorites, comets, asteroids, solar flares,
09:25et cetera.
09:25But it does mean that this age won't end for at least several years.
09:33Now, could the Wyrmwood star prophesied in the Bible be some kind of a comet or maybe an asteroid?
09:40Well, remember, the Bible says that Wyrmwood is some type of a star that burns like a torch.
09:47Now, comets can look like that.
09:52And some asteroids, by the way, can look like that when they hit the Earth's atmosphere.
09:56Now, Wyrmwood is also called a great star, which suggests it's not some small meteorite.
10:04But it's obviously not big enough to obliterate the entire Earth.
10:09Wyrmwood could be a large comet hitting the Earth, which would also have similar effects,
10:14by the way, if a medium-sized asteroid were to do so.
10:19And having this hit the Earth is going to do massive damage, as the Bible says.
10:25Now, although Wyrmwood does not have to be a comet, it could possibly be an asteroid,
10:30maybe even come from the asteroid belt.
10:33The Bible's description sounds to me more like a comet than an asteroid.
10:37Why is that?
10:39Well, in addition to looking like a star falling from the heavens and looking like a torch,
10:44although, again, when an asteroid has the atmosphere, it could do that,
10:48comets normally appear with something called cyanogen gas.
10:52Now, astronomers state hydrogen cyanide on comets may be the source of this cyanogen gas.
10:59Well, interestingly, remember, it's going to hit water.
11:02When cyanogen gas mixes with water, it forms hydrogen cyanide, which has kind of like an almond odor and a
11:10bitter taste.
11:13And it reportedly causes death at concentrations over five parts per million.
11:17And we heard that Wyrmwood causes the water to be bitter.
11:22Now, for Bible skeptics, the fact that centuries before humans had any idea that comets could produce bitter water,
11:29you know, it's recorded in the Bible.
11:31And that should be additional proof for anybody willing to see that the Bible was inspired by God,
11:37because how else would the Apostle John know about this?
11:41Now, yet, because of limited information in the Bible,
11:43it's possible that the biblically prophesied Wyrmwood could be an asteroid,
11:48though I think a comet's more likely.
11:50However, like comets, some asteroids are bound to have substances that would be bitter in the water,
11:55which is prophesied for Wyrmwood.
11:56Well, then, is it possible that the scientists will find a way to destroy Wyrmwood before it strikes the Earth?
12:03Well, some think so.
12:06They think they can change the trajectory of an asteroid.
12:10Let me read some more from this report.
12:14NASA's a participant in this 2027 Planetary Defense Conference,
12:18and it simulates how authorities will respond to a tungsticized object heading toward Earth.
12:27Now, this Sengasta event happened in 1908,
12:34and it flattened out 2,000 square kilometers or 500,000 acres
12:40and burnt more than 100 square kilometers of pine forest.
12:45So it was a huge, and it was a massive thing.
12:49And so they're trying to see, you know, what could happen here.
12:54Also, I mentioned before there was a study done by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
12:59And let me read some about this.
13:01It says, a new study from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
13:04has actually used 3D simulations to assess how effective a nuclear weapon would be
13:11for destroying large, dangerous space objects, such as a large asteroid on a collision course toward Earth.
13:19So, yes, scientists have looked at trying to stop something from outer space from hitting Earth.
13:24But that's a vain hope when it comes to trying to stop wormwood from hitting.
13:29You know why?
13:30Because biblical prophecies will come to pass.
13:34That said, while comets are still more likely to fill the wormwood prophecy than asteroids,
13:39based on my understanding,
13:43despite their plans, humans really have no real effective way to deal with potential experiments.
13:48Asteroid devastation, despite the fact some are hoping they've got a plan.
13:54Someday, according to your Bible,
13:56a major object from the sky is going to strike the Earth,
14:00according to biblical prophecy.
14:01Yes, wormwood will one day hit the Earth,
14:04and it's going to cause damage to the seas and death to humans.
14:08But that's at least six years from now,
14:10and probably more when you look at other events that need to happen before wormwood will hit.
14:15Again, it looks like it would be a comet or perhaps an asteroid.
14:18You know, as Jesus said in Mark 13, 37,
14:24what I say to you all,
14:25what I say to you, I say to you all, watch.
