Stroud's off-script heroics, Xavier Hutchinson's clutch game-tying touchdown, and why Houston's defense continues to fall apart in fourth quarters and overtime.

00:00Third and goal from the three, C.J. under pressure, scrambles out to the right side,
00:04pointing, throwing, C.J. connecting, touchdown, Houston.
00:09The Texans can tie this baby up.
00:12Xavier Hutchinson with the reception.
00:16Amazing day for him.
00:20All right, Mark Vandermeer on the call.
00:22That was Xavier Hutchinson scoring the touchdown that tied the game at the end of regulation.
00:26Yet another play that C.J. seemed to do his best stuff off script today,
00:31and that was another one where flushed out of the pocket, moving to his right.
00:34He's awfully good when he's moving to his right, was able to find Xavier Hutchinson in the back of the
00:39end zone.
00:40When he does that stuff down there and he's rolling out and he's finding guys in the back of the
00:43end zone,
00:43it feels like it does it with Nico like every other week.
00:46I'm always like, why did you guys even bother running the ball?
00:48I'm first and second down.
00:49Just do that three times and let C.J. figure something out.
00:52Yeah, I'm anxious to look at the film and just see.
00:54I mean, from the game watching it live, it seemed like a lot of the drives that they did have
01:00where previously this year, a lot of it, boy, you could see is just well-oiled machine.
01:05Man, ball's out, guys are open, he's going to the right place.
01:09When the opponent plays a lot of man like that and you guys aren't creating separation right away,
01:14the quarterback being able to buy some time, it flips it immediately, right?
01:18When you snap the ball, the defense has got the advantage
01:21because we don't really have guys that separate a lot versus man.
01:24And schematically, I don't think that we did a lot to create opportunity.
01:28So the defense has the advantage.
01:29Well, the minute that C.J. is able to slide back up in the pocket and break containment,
01:33now we have.
01:34Now C.J. has a huge advantage because most guys have their back to him
01:38and all of a sudden you've got guys that are popping open
01:41and he is so good in those situations.
01:43I know there was three or four times today.
01:45I just don't remember if they were in drives that ended in points or not,
01:48but I'm anxious to see how many of those plays were points, actually ended in points.
01:54Like, in other words, how much of our production on the scoreboard today
01:57actually came from C.J. extending plays versus in structure, on schedule,
02:05having drives like we've seen previously with this offense.
02:07Yeah, it felt like a disproportionate amount was off-script stuff today.
02:11But, yeah, I'm anxious to go back myself and watch that.
02:13That was your victory live drive of the game.
02:15Nine plays, 48 yards.
02:17They only needed to move the ball 48 yards to get in the end zone,
02:19in part because Tank Dell's first punt return of the year
02:22was a nice little 14-yard scamper to get it into giant territory.
02:25So they were starting with a short field on that drive.
02:29The Texans were, they would drive down, they would tie it up at 21,
02:33they would go to overtime, and unfortunately, overtime,
02:36not kind to the Houston Texans today.
02:3827-21, Devin Singletary, a 30-yard touchdown run to close things out.
02:43That was your drive of the game, though, brought to you by Victory Live.
02:45Victory Live, connecting the world of live experiences.
02:49All right, 713-572-4610.
02:51Let's go back out to the phones, to Cypress, and talk to Trevon.
02:54Trevon, you're up on Texans postgame.
02:57All right, real quick, y'all.
03:00The top story or whatever, but it's actually a really good comparison to Tank Dell.
03:04My wife, y'all know her as Carissa Jean.
03:08Basically, she had a little spell of vertigo.
03:11Now, she went to the doctor.
03:13Everything was perfect, right?
03:15Heart, cardio, all that.
03:17Well, she had to go back to the cardio because another episode, right?
03:20And they put this little thing on her.
03:21And the thing is basically saying, hey, we kind of want you to have this episode so we can, you
03:28know.
03:29And, of course, you don't want it to happen, but, you know, literally the doctor was saying it.
03:32I was saying it kind of wanted to happen so we could see what the hell is going on because
03:37all the tests say that you're perfectly healthy.
03:40Well, that's kind of the same for Tank Dell.
03:42Tank Dell, we wanted him to get hit.
03:44We wanted him to get hit to see that reaction, to see, like, exactly how we'll be able to pop
03:50up and see what's going on.
03:51Just like he said in his interview earlier, he feels 100%.
03:54I'm feeling pretty confident about it, so I'm actually excited about that.
03:58But, Xavier basically said, hey, y'all ain't taking my playing time.
04:04He was like, no, no, I'm about to go ball out today, and that's exactly what he did.
04:09So, really like that.
04:10I'm just curious, though, seriously, how does the almost damn near the exact same defense as last year happen this
04:20year?
04:21Now, a buddy of mine did text because I asked him the same question.
04:24He said, oh, they heard the paper clippings.
04:25They heard the paper clippings.
04:26They were listening to that or whatever.
04:28But I'm curious to hear y'all's opinion on that.
04:30Y'all just tell me what's up.
04:32Okay.
04:32Thanks, Trevon.
04:33Appreciate it.
04:34I appreciate the phone call.
04:35I'll tell you what.
04:36I don't know if I have a great answer for it.
04:38The thing that's scary, I don't know that D'Amico Ryans has a great answer for it.
04:41He did not sound like somebody in his press conference postgame that had a ton of answers for why they
04:46can't tackle this year
04:47or why there's guys running around wide open.
04:50Well, I mean, to me, defensively, you've got to admit or acknowledge who you are and what's going on.
04:58Like, yes, they're poor tacklers, but guess what?
05:00They don't swarm anywhere near to what they used to.
05:02They can't cover like they used to.
05:03There's a lot.
05:05And I know the secondary is not forcing the quarterbacks to hold the football, but for whatever reason,
05:10there's not near as much chaos around the quarterback and at the line of scrimmage like we saw last year,
05:16right?
05:17Last year, there were not holes created big enough for Cam Scadaboo to run through the way he did today.
05:23Like, there's a lot of, oh, well, yeah.
05:28You know, I think D'Amico, this past weekend, he was asked, hey, what does your defense do good?
05:32Oh, we stopped a run.
05:34I mean, like, and I thought, but even then, like, yes, statistically, they've been good.
05:39But when you watch the Texans, you don't go, well, this has just been a dom.
05:42They've been a great dominant against the run.
05:44They actually have the statistically like yards per carry.
05:48They've been fine.
05:49Like they haven't been great, but they've been fine.
05:50They, I saw a chart this week.
05:53They had the, of all 32 teams in the league, the least amount of run like stuffs.
05:58Yeah.
05:58Like, you know, like stopping teams at or behind the line of scrimmage.
06:02Well, I mean, you're getting, you're getting torched.
06:04You're giving up 30 points, 30 points three times this year.
06:06I mean, so you're, it's not, I don't know.
06:09I just, I think there's still a, I think there was a, if you call it red to paper clippings
06:13or whatever, but when D'Amico Ryans is standing at the podium talking about, yeah, this defense
06:16is going, is going to be this, this, and that this year.
06:19And then in the preseason, I think it was after, maybe it was at the Raiders.
06:23Was it the Raiders?
06:25Interscourt.
06:26Joint practice deal.
06:27Um, and, and, and I think the Raiders had some comments about how, how good the Texas
06:31defense was.
06:32Yeah.
06:32This defense is pretty good.
06:33They're going to give the offense some problems this year.
06:35I think you start smelling yourself a little bit.
06:37And I think we're probably seeing some of that, but the reality of it is, is, I mean, you're
06:40sitting at, you were, you were sitting at 0 and 4 and giving up 30 twice and guys were
06:45still acting like they were last year.
06:46Yeah.
06:47I like the whole thing about reading their own press clippings to me.
06:50I don't know.
06:51I mean, I'm not a former player, but I am somebody who's kind of follows the ups and
06:56downs of teams emotionally as a, as a, you know, someone who, you know, likes the handicapping
07:00side of things.
07:01I follow that stuff pretty closely.
07:03The whole reading your own press clippings thing feels like something you should have
07:06out of your system.
07:07By the time you've started the season 0 and 3, we're seven games in now.
07:11A guy came in today and JJ McCarthy, who'd never started a game before for the Giants.
07:16He's been in this system for like three weeks and he came in today and he was torching you
07:20at times and it could have been worse.
07:22It could have been worse.
07:23If, if, if Mooney knows how to hold onto a ball by the sidelines, there's another 35
07:28yards that he would have had off script against your defense where for whatever reason, the
07:32secondary just falls asleep and has a guy standing with nobody near him along the sidelines
07:37there.
07:37This is some inexcusable stuff going on with this defense right now.
07:41Yeah.
07:41It's, it's, it's tough to watch.
07:42It's, it's tough to even wrap your head around, you know, watching them last year to watching
07:47them this year.
07:48And it's hard to not, it's hard to not think that you, this off season and training camp
07:52guys were feeling themselves a little bit, maybe not working as hard, maybe, maybe not,
07:57not, you know, the sense of urgency to pick up the, the, the, you know, that this week's
08:02game plan or this year's, you know, a playbook, however you want to couch it.
08:07There's clearly a difference between last year and this year.
08:09And there's too many of the same faces out there to, to say that they, they're, they're
08:13not capable.
08:14And I don't know what the adjustments are.
08:15Cause it seems like the solution, at least in the press conferences, I'm sure D'Amico
08:18has more solutions behind the scene that he's willing to divulge five minutes after a game
08:23is over.
08:23I get that.
08:24But it seems like the solution is we just got to work harder.
08:27You know, we just got to work at it.
08:28You know, we just got to get back to it and we just got to work really hard at practice
08:31at getting better at this stuff.
08:33Um, I don't know what the next chess move is for him here.
08:36I fear like this is just what the defense is going to be this year.
08:39You know, look, you look today and even with the, the man to man, you know, uh, pick route
08:44that, that somehow, somehow Derek Stingley jr.
08:47Ended up on the ground was a big play.
08:48I mean, you had some big plays, but the story today you play, if you could have just stopped
08:53the run a couple of times, you played well enough to win a game.
08:55Yeah.
08:56I mean, you played significantly better than you did when you're giving up 30 and you
08:59played, I would say probably to the tune of what you should have done against the
09:02Giants defense.
09:03But then when you end it the way you ended it, that's, that's where it becomes, uh, the,
09:08the major, major headache.
09:10Yep.
09:11Uh, all right.
09:11Seven, one, three, five, seven, two, four, six, 10.
09:13Let's get another one in here on the phones.
09:15Let's go to sugar land and talk to Luke Luke.
09:17You're up on Texans post game.
09:21Hey, Hey, you know, I feel like I'm kind of preaching to the choir here.
09:26Just left the game, been a Texan fan since 2002.
09:31I'm just wondering what the heck is going on with this defense.
09:35I mean, y'all just covered it here in the last couple, three minutes, but, uh, it's
09:40like, what the hell is going on here?
09:43You know, we go to these games, we spend this money, we do all this stuff at the end
09:48of the day.
09:49Yes.
09:49D'Amico should have the team ready to go, but ultimately I feel like this all falls
09:55back on the McNairs and ownership.
09:57And I feel like that since day one, we're looking for a good product.
10:02We're sitting in traffic.
10:04We're coming to these games.
10:06We're trying to see something.
10:08These guys, they're going out there.
10:10It just, it just looks like the team that we're playing against weekend, week out, wants
10:16it more than us.
10:18And that's all I got to say.
10:19All right.
10:20Thanks Luke.
10:20Yeah.
10:21294 days.
10:22Well, that's the last time that fans walked out of NRG stadium with a victorious taste
10:27in their mouth.
10:28You know that, but that, that, that hurts.
10:30Cause he, when he said that, I was like, yeah, I agree with you.
10:34You, you, you started looking at the games that, that, especially that we've seen this
10:37year, um, just to, in a, in a, in a, in a fan's term, just watching the game, it does
10:44appear that the opponent just wants it and is willing to do more and is more physical
10:48and is putting it on the line to a different level than what your guys are willing to do.
10:54Yeah.
10:54Whether it's a physicality thing or like the, I, like I would submit like the Buffalo game
10:58earlier this year and the Dallas game, certainly it was probably more of like a mental, like
11:04the, like just, just the miscommunication, but just not on the details, like an inattentiveness
11:08to details today.
11:09It felt more like a physical thing today felt what today felt like they probably should
11:13have taken the bi-week this week and not gotten cute with playing a game after the London
11:16game in retrospect.
11:18Um, but yeah, for whatever reason, yeah.
11:21Like it's either like just a physical, they want it more or a mental, you're just not dialed
11:27in and there's guys just running free out there.
11:29Well, you're letting it, it's, there's a real let go of the rope late that we've seen this
11:34year at home, unfortunately with this, with this team and more specifically with the defense.
11:38And that's, that's a, that's easy for a fan base to see and hard to accept.
11:42Oh, and four, oh, and four at home this year so far.
11:45And three of them are games that you let go late.
11:49Yeah.
11:49Well, we, we've been down this, we've been down this road, right?
11:51We started out, I think we had Daniil Hunter in here.
11:54I think it was Daniil.
11:55Maybe it was on one of the shows.
11:56Maybe it was our show on the drive on Thursdays when a player calls in, but, but, you know,
12:00it was a man, what, what's going on with this defense early in the season?
12:03Well, you know, we didn't play any snaps in the, in the preseason, man.
12:06Maybe, maybe, maybe it's a little rust, right?
12:08And then you get a month into it and you, you start hearing, well, which we played Dak
12:13and Josh Allen and Joe Burrow.
12:15And, you know, it's, it was pretty good offenses, pretty good quarterbacks, pretty good wide
12:19receivers.
12:20Well, all of a sudden you get six weeks into it, seven weeks into it.
12:24And now it's JJ McCarthy and Cam Scadaboo that you had to come in here.
12:29What's the excuse today, right?
12:30So it's, oh man, it's, it's been a, it's the, the excuses have ran the gamut.
12:34Right.
12:34A quarterback who another team gave up on and, and running backs who were just challenging
12:40your manhood all day.
12:41That's right.
12:41Who were running, running right up in your face.
12:44All right.
12:44713-572-4610.
12:46We'll take some more of your phone calls as we roll on.
