00:00It's National Pumpkin Day and I'm here on Pumpkin Moon to talk all things
00:04pumpkin with Charlie. Charlie thank you so much for joining me. It's a pleasure thank
00:10you very much for coming down today. And obviously there's a lot of pumpkins here how is it that you
00:15take care of them all and how many do you actually have? Well I've planted about 85,000 seeds this
00:20year and we planted in the middle of May. Taking care of I give them fertilizer and basically I
00:27just hope that it rains. They get enough moisture to get established and then leave them to it.
00:32There is a lot of waste that comes with pumpkins this time of year. How is it that we can
00:37reuse
00:38and recycle our pumpkins instead of just throwing them away? Well what we do here is once we finish
00:44for the Halloween period we open our gates to both food banks and the Felix project and we also have
00:52a lot of animal sanctuaries coming in. So we're trying to donate as many squash and the orange
00:58pumpkins as possible. And this is quite a seasonal business if you will in terms of everyone wants
01:04a pumpkin during Halloween and it dies off during January times. How do you manage kind of as a
01:10business on that behalf with the cost of living? It's kind of tricky but as you say it's very seasonal
01:18so we just hope that we get a good October and the weather holds out. But I do also have
01:24to have
01:24a maize maize and sunflowers in the summer so at least I can sort of spread the income stream slightly
01:29over the year. But like any farmer it's a seasonal thing for all farmers in the summer is when you
01:36get
01:36your prop in and that's where basically you're getting your income from. And with your pumpkins what
01:43is the biggest pumpkin you've ever had on this farm? The biggest one I got was 85 kilo. It was
01:49an
01:49Atlantic giant. It was huge. It was great.
