00:00EA canceled Mass Effect 5 on Wednesday,
00:02and then on Thursday, someone leaked its trailer,
00:05and now 50,000 people are signing a petition
00:07to bring it back.
00:09Here's what's happening.
00:10EA shut down the studio BioWare after more than 30 years
00:13and cut around 400 jobs.
00:15Around 50 of them were at BioWare working on Mass Effect 5.
00:19The company's letter to staff called BioWare
00:21a legendary studio and said the decision
00:23was not taken lightly.
00:25A day later, a brand new Reddit account posted
00:27a two minute trailer for the now canceled game
00:29and Bloomberg confirmed it's real.
00:32It's called Mass Effect Universe,
00:34and the trailer ends with the words coming soon.
00:36And obviously we can't show any of the footage here
00:38for legal reasons.
00:39A petition to save the game got most of those 50,000 signatures
00:43in a single day.
00:44It asks EA to either fund the game or sell the rights
00:47to a studio that will,
00:48and a writer on Amazon's Mass Effect TV show shared it.
00:51Some fans think the leaks were deliberate,
00:53a Deadpool type move where the leaked footage gets fans
00:56loud enough to force the movie into production.
00:58As of this morning, nobody knows who leaked it,
01:01and EA hasn't said anything about the trailer or the petition.
01:04According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, EA also hasn't said
01:08whether it even tried to sell BioWare or the Mass Effect
01:11and Dragon Age franchises.
01:12Now, the gaming giant is no stranger to buying and shutting down studios,
01:16but BioWare is the first since a Saudi-led group took the company private in August.
01:21So should EA sell Mass Effect to a studio that wants it?
01:24And does a petition like this ever actually change a decision like this?
