00:00The 8th time this year
00:01Sorry Mia, Vivian and I are flying to Geneva for the cardiac summit, you understand
00:05I stood inside a gas station, gripping my phone, you understand
00:08That's what he always said
00:09I grabbed a scratch ticket off the counter, $10
00:12A stupid, petty purchase
00:14Then I closed my eyes and made a wish
00:15If Ethan has fallen in love with Vivian, let this ticket win $10 million
00:19I scratched it, the clerk leaned over
00:22Congratulations, jackpot, $10,000
00:24I stared at the ticket, and I started to cry
00:27My wishes never lie, since I was a child, I've had one power
00:31I make a wish with a condition attached
00:33My gift has one absolute rule, if the condition is true, the sign happens
00:36If it is false, the sign cannot happen
00:39The night I turned 18, my parents died in a car crash
00:42At the funeral, Ethan Cole held my hand
00:45My childhood best friend, a surgical genius
00:48I will love you forever Mia, I swear
00:51After that, every wish I ever made started the same way
00:54If Ethan loves me, let it rain tomorrow, rain
00:56If Ethan loves me, let me find my lost earring
00:59Found it
00:59For 10 years, the wishes worked
01:01For 10 years, he loved me
01:03Then 6 weeks ago, Vivian Shaw arrived
01:05The hospital's brilliant new fellow
01:06She looked me up and down at a charity gala and left
01:09A Barbie who can't even tell an ECE from a grocery register?
01:12What does Ethan see in her?
01:13Ethan started staying late
01:15Trips, conferences
01:17Vivian, Vivian, Vivian
01:19Tonight, I finally asked the question I've been too scared to ask
01:22The universe answered, loudly, 10 million dollars
01:25Ethan had fallen in love with Vivian
01:27Maybe some part of him still loved me
01:28Maybe he even believed he did
01:30But his heart no longer belonged to me alone
01:32The clerk stared at me, baffled
01:34Lady, you just won 10 million dollars?
01:37Why do you look like your world just ended?
01:40Because it did
01:44Ethan called the next evening
01:46Dinner tonight
01:47The department is welcoming its new hires
01:49Wear something nice
01:50I went
01:51At the restaurant, Ethan and Vivian sat side by side at the head of the table
01:55Laughing, comfortable
01:56He stood when he saw me
01:57Everyone?
01:58My girlfriend, Mia
01:59What a gorgeous couple!
02:02Vivian smiled
02:03It wasn't a nice smile
02:04Let me give you all your first lesson
02:06Never choose a girlfriend based on looks alone
02:08Miss Mia here seems to spend her days dressing like Barbie and pouting at her boyfriend
02:12She laughed
02:13I'm genuinely curious, Mia
02:15Do you and Ethan actually have anything in common?
02:17What do you two even talk about behind closed doors?
02:19The table of doctors exchanged looks
02:21Polite
02:21Uncomfortable
02:22Ethan didn't even raise his voice
02:24Vivian, that's enough
02:25Then he squeezed my shoulder
02:26Leaned in
02:27Be mature, okay?
02:28Don't make a scene
02:29I sat down
02:30I said nothing
02:31A senior attending raised his glass
02:33Speaking of hearts
02:34Our cardiac center just got its funding renewed
02:36All thanks to the Sinclair Foundation
02:37I heard the daughter inherited everything and hasn't shown her face since
02:40Vivian swirled her wine
02:41Rich people's charity
02:43Nothing more
02:44The ones who actually save lives hold scalpels
02:47Not checkbooks
02:49They had no idea whose name was on that funding
02:51I didn't tell them
02:52I never tell anyone
02:53Instead, my hand slid into my pocket
02:55The lottery ticket was still there
02:57Ten million dollars of proof
02:59Folded into a square
03:00My wishes never lie
03:01Fine
03:02Then let's ask another question
03:03Right here
03:04In front of everyone
03:05I pulled out a quarter and set it on the table
03:08Quick question
03:09What are the odds of ten times in a row?
03:14Someone answered first
03:16One in 1024
03:17About .0977%
03:19Basically zero
03:20Basically zero
03:22I repeated
03:22Good
03:23I looked straight at Vivian
03:25Wanna play a game?
03:26If you're in love with Ethan Cole
03:27I'll flip heads ten times in a row
03:30The laughter died instantly
03:31Ethan grabbed my wrist
03:33His brow creased
03:34What kind of joke is this?
03:35Let her play
03:35It's just a game
03:37Just a game
03:38I pulled my wrist free
03:39I picked up the quarter
03:40And flicked it into the air
03:42I caught it
03:43And slapped it flat
03:43On the back of my hand
03:44Heads
03:45Luck
03:46That's all
03:47What you think you're a witch?
03:48Funny word choice
03:49Caught it
03:49Heads
03:50A few doctors leaned in
03:52Flip
03:52Catch
03:53Heads
03:53Three in a row
03:54Vivian stopped talking
03:56Still possible
03:57Still normal
03:58Heads
03:59Four
03:59Heads
04:00Seven
04:05Somebody whispered
04:06No way
04:06I balanced the coin on my thumb again
04:09My hands were perfectly steady
04:10Across the table
04:11Vivian's face had lost all its color
04:13Ethan was staring at me
04:14And for the first time all night
04:15He looked afraid
04:17Probability is dead
04:18It's just dead
04:19Mia
04:20Stop playing
04:21I'm having fun
04:22Isn't everyone having fun?
04:24Ethan's hand clamped over mine
04:25Hard
04:26His voice dropped to a hiss
04:27Enough
04:28I'm warning you
04:29I tossed the coin anyway
04:30He snapped
04:31His hand swung out
04:32And slapped it out of the air
04:33The quarter hit the floor
04:34It rolled in a wide
04:35Lazy circle
04:36Every person at that table
04:37Stood up to watch it
04:38It wobbled
04:39It spun
04:39It fell flat
04:40Heads
04:41Ten
04:41Nobody breathed
04:42Then Vivian's voice
04:43Cut through the silence
04:44What is this supposed to mean?
04:46Ethan's head whipped toward her
04:47His composure cracked wide open
04:49Listen to me
04:49Let me explain
04:50Vivian stood
04:51She grabbed her wine glass
04:52And threw the whole thing in his face
05:00Red wine soaked his white shirt like a wound
05:02Yes, I have feelings for you
05:04But I never once tried to break you two up
05:06She turned to me
05:07Chin high
05:07Tears shining
05:08Mia
05:09You didn't have to humiliate me in public
05:10I give up
05:11I hope you're both very happy
05:12She grabbed her purse
05:13And turned to leave
05:14And Ethan
05:15My boyfriend of ten years
05:16Lunged out of his chair
05:17His hand locked around her arm
05:19Don't go
05:19Vivian yanked her arm free
05:21And stormed out
05:22When did you know
05:23You caused this whole scene
05:25Are you satisfied now?
05:27I went cold
05:28He knew
05:29He'd known about Vivian's feelings this entire time
05:31He hid it from me
05:32He let her dump all her bitter little insults on me
05:34His actual girlfriend
05:35And he never said a word
05:37Because he didn't want to lose her
05:39Take an Uber home
05:40It's late
05:41She shouldn't be out there alone this late
05:42Then he ran out the door
05:43A young resident slid into the chair beside me
05:45Are you okay?
05:46You've been crying this whole time
05:47I touched my face
05:49Wet
05:49Soaked
05:52Soaked
05:53Next morning
05:54I drove to the state lottery headquarters
05:56By noon
05:57Six million dollars sat in my account
05:59After taxes
05:59When I got home
06:01I smelled food
06:03Ethan stood in my kitchen
06:04Dark circles under his eyes
06:06He hadn't slept
06:07I went to the market this morning
06:08Got the scallops fresh
06:09He pulled out my chair
06:10Poured my water
06:11Smiled like last night never happened
06:13I waited
06:14Because I knew this man
06:15Ten years
06:15He never cooked without a reason
06:17Halfway through dinner
06:18He set down his fork
06:19I need two hundred thousand dollars
06:21Your parents' memorial trust
06:23It's still sitting there
06:24Right?
06:25Vivian asked to be removed from my team last night
06:27He leaned forward
06:28There's a cardiac clinical trial
06:29She's always wanted to run
06:31I want to fund it
06:32That money's just sitting there anyway
06:34Didn't your family donate it to the hospital before?
06:37This is the same thing
06:38Just more precise
06:38Straight to the most talented person I know
06:40That trust was the price of my parents' lives
06:43In college
06:44I worked double shifts until two in the morning
06:46I never touched a single dollar of it
06:47Not one
06:48He knew that
06:51He wanted it for her
06:53Ethan
06:54You care about her that much?
06:57You don't understand
06:58She's the most talented person I've ever met
07:00She can save so many lives
07:02Vivian this
07:03Vivian that
07:04Vivian
07:04Vivian
07:05Vivian
07:05For six weeks
07:06I told myself it was professional admiration
07:08I'm not touching the trust
07:11Give it up
07:11Ethan stared at me
07:12Something hard settled into his face
07:14I know you're upset
07:15But Vivian and I are innocent
07:17I've never done anything to betray you
07:19Innocent
07:20Ten coin flips said otherwise
07:21Ten million dollars said otherwise
07:23The door closed behind him
07:24Scallops
07:25All my favorites
07:26A bribe dressed up as an apology
07:28Then I picked up my phone
07:29Los Angeles
07:30One way
07:31Next week
07:31I tapped confirm purchase
07:33Confirm purchase
07:37Gave my notice at the gallery the next morning
07:39My boss nearly fell out of his chair
07:43Mia, wait
07:43I'll give you a raise
07:4515%
07:4620?
07:46I won ten million dollars
07:47I'm financially free
07:49He thought I was joking
07:51I signed the paperwork anyway
07:52One last stop before Los Angeles
07:54My parents' house in Beacon Hill
07:56The house I grew up in
07:57I hadn't been inside in a year
07:58Too many ghosts
07:59But I couldn't leave Boston without saying goodbye
08:02I climbed the front steps and stopped
08:03Trash bags
08:04Piled against the door
08:05Overflowing
08:06Then the door opened
08:07From the inside
08:08Cigarette smoke rolled out and hit me in the face
08:10Dad's sailboat model lay shattered in the entryway
08:13The one he'd built the winter I was ten
08:14Crushed
08:15Stepped on
08:16And in the living room
08:17A man sprawled on the couch
08:18Bare feet propped up
08:19On my mother's white grand piano
08:21Who are you?
08:23I should be asking you that
08:25This is my daughter's house
08:27Her daughter
08:28Get out
08:29Get out of my house
08:30He shoved me
08:31I hit the floor hard
08:32My palm landed on something burning
08:34A lead cigarette butt
08:35On my mother's hardwood floor
08:36Pain seared through my hand
08:38The woman didn't even flinch
08:39Tyler
08:40Call your sister
08:42Tell her some crazy woman broke into the house
08:48Cradled my burnt hand and dialed Ethan
08:50Mia?
08:51You changed your mind?
08:52He thought I was calling about the money
08:55There are strangers in my parents' house
08:57Did you know?
08:59Silence
09:00Three full seconds
09:01I let Vivian stay there
09:02Her apartment had a pipe burst
09:04She had nowhere to go
09:05It didn't mean anything
09:06He gave her my parents' house
09:07He had a key because I trusted him
09:09Get here in ten minutes and clean up this mess
09:11Or I'm calling the police
09:12I hung up
09:13Tyler got off the couch
09:15He sat at my feet
09:16Calling the cops on us?
09:17In my sister's house?
09:19He shoved me
09:20Once
09:20Twice
09:21My back hit the wall
09:22He grabbed my collar
09:23And I sank my teeth into his forearm
09:25He screamed
09:26Blood welled up under my mouth
09:27His mother flew at me
09:28Shrieking
09:29You little
09:30You dare hurt my son
09:32You animal
09:34I clawed
09:35She pulled harder
09:35Tyler cursed
09:36Clutching his leading arm
09:37That's when the front door burst open
09:39Ethan
09:39Vivian was right behind him
09:41This is what they saw
09:42The harmless Mia
09:42Teeth bared
09:43Blood on her lip
09:44Tangled in a screaming fist fight
09:46With a middle-aged woman
09:47Mia!
09:47Don't be disrespectful to your elders
09:54Vivian charged past him
09:55She shoved me with both hands
09:56I hit the floor
09:57My burned palm slammed against the hardwood and I gasped
10:00You touched my mother?
10:03You just wait
10:04Ethan reached down to help me out
10:06Then I swung
10:06The slap cracked across Vivian's face
10:08Give me back my house keys
10:10Vivian touched her cheek
10:11Her eyes filled with curious tears
10:13She dug the keys out of her pocket
10:15And hurled them at the floor
10:16Stop playing the victim all the time
10:18Nobody owes you anything
10:20Ethan picked up the keys
10:22He stepped close and reached out
10:23To pat my head
10:24Like he used to
10:25Like I was still his sock
10:26I slapped his hand away
10:27He was stunned
10:28Then his voice went gentle
10:29Okay
10:29You hit her
10:30You got it out of your system
10:32Let's talk
10:32There's nothing to talk about Ethan
10:34We're breaking up
10:35You don't mean that
10:36I turned for the house
10:38He pushed past me
10:39Then he stopped
10:39Takeout containers piled into mountains
10:41My mother's plants kicked over
10:43Soil everywhere
10:44Her flower pots stuffed with cigarette butts
10:46And in the corner of the couch
10:47Tossed aside like garbage
10:48Our only family photo
10:49The frame glass shattered
10:50My mother's smiling face
10:52Split down the middle with a crack
10:58Dropped to my knees
10:59I gathered the broken glass with my bare hands
11:01Piece by piece
11:02Trying to fit my mother's face back together
11:04Blood ran down my fingers
11:06I didn't feel it
11:07Mia, stop, Mia
11:09Ethan grabbed my wrists
11:10His face was white
11:11It's all my fault
11:13You're scaring me, please
11:14Vivian stood there
11:16Tyler behind her
11:17She looked at Ethan's arms around me and sneered
11:19Didn't you two just break up?
11:20Mia, are you really this cheap?
11:22Shut up!
11:24I never gave your family permission to move in
11:26And I told you not to touch anything in this house
11:29You fool
11:30Can't you see she's using the breakup
11:32To make you choose sides?
11:33You cursed little jinx
11:36You killed your own parents
11:37Your 18th birthday?
11:39You just had to have chocolate cake from Rosie's
11:41All the way across town
11:43Your parents drove out to buy it
11:44Vivian
11:45And a truck ran a red light
11:47And killed them both!
11:49He told her
11:50He was the only one who knew
11:51And he told her
11:52Why don't you just go die?
11:58My 18th birthday
11:59But it's my birthday
12:01I want Rosie's
12:03Mom laughed
12:03She looked at dad over my head
12:05They smiled at each other
12:06Dad was already at the door
12:07Scooping his car keys off the hook
12:09We'll go get it right now
12:11Mom grabbed her coat
12:12She kissed my forehead on the way out
12:13I ran to the window and pushed it open
12:15I yelled down at the driveway
12:17Remember!
12:18Chocolate filling!
12:19Dad waved without turning around
12:21Mom looked up at my window
12:22She raised both arms over her head
12:24And made a big heart
12:25That was the last time I ever saw them
12:27The intersection was 6 blocks from Rosie's
12:29Their light was green
12:30They crossed Lake City
12:31Slowly, safely
12:33A fully loaded truck ran the red
12:34They never made it to the hospital
12:36The cake box was still on the back seat
12:38Chocolate filling
12:39I was standing at that window when the police called
12:41My vision blurred
12:42I couldn't believe
12:42The last thing I heard was Ethan screaming her name
12:45Then everything went black
12:50I woke up in a hospital bed
12:52Ethan sat beside the bed
12:53His eyes were raw and red
12:54He looked like he hadn't slept in days
12:56I made them all move out
12:58Everything's back in place
13:01He reached for my hand
13:02I didn't move
13:04Forgive me
13:05Okay?
13:06Tell me the truth
13:07Do you also think I killed my parents?
13:09How could it be your fault?
13:11It's mine
13:11Vivian asked about it one day
13:12So I told her
13:13I didn't know she'd think of it that way
13:14He told her
13:15My deepest wound
13:15My ten years of guilt
13:17His phone erupted
13:18He answered
13:18Vivian's voice filled the whole room
13:20Get back to the hospital within the hour
13:21If you're not here today
13:22You will never see me in your OR again
13:24Ethan lowered the phone
13:27That's just how Vivian is
13:28You know she says things she doesn't mean
13:31Don't take it personally
13:32So my house gets destroyed
13:33And I don't even deserve an apology
13:35I'll apologize for her
13:36Okay?
13:37All the fight drained out of me
13:38Just go
13:39He stood
13:40I'll come back tonight
13:42The moment his footsteps faded
13:43I sat out
13:44I pulled out the floor myself
13:45I found a nurse
13:46And signed the discharge papers
13:47Against medical advice
13:48My hands were still bandaged
13:50My signature came out crooked
13:51I didn't care
13:52There was nothing left for me in Boston
13:58Weeks later
13:59I closed on the Malibu house
14:00I had saved online years ago
14:01I sat alone on the cold sand
14:03Waves crashing in the dark
14:04The family photo lay in my lap
14:06Half repaired
14:06And I finally broke
14:08I cried the way I hadn't cried in 10 years
14:10Then
14:10Through my own sobbing
14:11I heard it
14:12A yelp
14:12Hi
14:13Panicked
14:14A dog
14:15Small
14:16Out in the black water
14:17I jumped in anyway
14:18I grabbed the dog
14:19And the current breath as well
14:20My head went under
14:21Once
14:21Twice
14:22Then a strong arm locked around my waist
14:24And pulled me towards shore
14:25A moment later
14:26I was coughing on the beach
14:27The little dog shivering against my chest
14:29A man knelt over me
14:30Soaked
14:30Well over 6 feet
14:31Sharp brow
14:32Steady eyes
14:32A big black labrador shook seawater beside him
14:34He just draped a towel over my shoulders
14:37I'm Julian
14:38I live two houses down
14:40The little stray burrowed deeper into my arms
14:42And refused to move
14:43Looks like it's chosen you
14:45He walked off into the dark
14:47I looked down at the soggy little thing in my lap
14:49It licked my chin
14:50I whispered
14:51Lucky
14:51Your name is Lucky
14:56Julian Reed kept a perfect distance
14:58A nod at sunrise when we walked our dogs
15:00He never asked about my past
15:02He never crossed a line
15:03One night
15:04I woke from a nightmare
15:05With my mother's last smile trap behind my eyes
15:07I sat on the front steps until dawn
15:09Julian came back from walking bare and saw me
15:11A minute later
15:11He returned with a blanket and a cup of coffee
15:14He set them beside me
15:15Then sat at the far end of the steps
15:16We watched the sky grow lighter without saying a word
15:19Then, three months later
15:21I opened my door
15:21Someone was standing on my porch
15:23Ethan
15:23How could you leave without a single word?
15:26I clipped on Lucky's leash
15:27I walked right past him
15:29Our shared Zillow account
15:31You saved this house
15:32Years ago you had it favorited
15:34I kept walking
15:35You said you wanted to settle down by the ocean with me
15:38Remember?
15:39A house on the beach
15:40A dog
15:41Lucky growled low at him
15:43I checked the account every day after you blocked me
15:45Then one day the listing changed to sold
15:47I knew it was you
15:48I flew out that night
15:49This was the house you dreamed of for us
15:51You always said this was where we'd build our life
15:56I know I was wrong
15:58Life without you is worse than death
16:00Give me one more chance
16:02Do you know how I got this house?
16:04The day you told me you were flying to Geneva with Vivian
16:06I bought a scratch ticket and made a wish
16:08If Ethan has fallen in love with Vivian
16:10Let this ticket win ten million dollars
16:11I won
16:12A low probability is still a probability
16:14Have you considered that your condition was wrong?
16:16That it was luck?
16:17Nothing but luck
16:17There it was
16:18The surgeon
16:19The scientist
16:20Bargaining with the universe
16:21I swear on every scalpel I've ever held
16:24I have never
16:25Not for one moment stopped loving you
16:26He said it like it answered my question
16:28It didn't
16:28That wasn't what I asked
16:29It asked whether you had fallen in love with Vivian
16:32He dug into his pocket and pulled out a quarter
16:34If you don't believe me, flip it
16:36Right now
16:37Ask whether I love you
16:38Flip it a hundred times
16:39A thousand
16:40I'm confident
16:40He thought loving me excused every time he had chosen her
16:43He thought if the coin came up right
16:45We'd rewind
16:45And I'd become as soft
16:46Patient me again
16:54Ethan
16:55There's no chance for us
16:58Not because you never loved me
17:00Because I don't love you anymore
17:03Ethan went completely still
17:05You're joking, right?
17:06Ten years
17:07Ten years
17:08How can you just stop loving someone?
17:10If I no longer love Ethan Cole
17:11Let this coin land heads
17:12I balanced it on my thumb
17:14His hand shot out and crushed mine
17:15Before I could flip it
17:16I looked up
17:17Don't
17:17He was crying
17:18Ethan Cole was crying
17:19In ten years
17:20I had never once seen it
17:23Don't be this cruel to me, okay?
17:25I pulled my hand free of his
17:26And I studied his tears
17:28So this is what you look like when you cry?
17:30All those years
17:31He'd watched me cry
17:32He'd watched
17:32And squeezed my shoulder
17:34And told me to be mature
17:35Is this what he felt
17:36All those times?
17:37I won't give up
17:38I'm not asking you to love me right away
17:40I'll make you see how hard I'm trying
17:42The quarter sat in my palm
17:43I didn't need to flip it
17:44I already knew
17:47And moved into the house across the street
17:50Every morning
17:50He ran into me on my dog walk
17:52Until this morning
17:53Vivian rounded on Ethan
17:54This is what you've been doing all this time?
17:57You abandoned your operating room
17:58Your research
17:59So you could camp outside her house?
18:01Do you know how many people
18:02Lose their chance to be saved
18:04Every day he isn't holding a scalpel?
18:06You're using his guilt to keep him here
18:08You have money
18:09A beach house
18:10And nothing more important to do
18:11Then walk your dog
18:12Six months ago
18:13I would have flinched
18:14I would have apologized for standing in the way
18:15Not anymore
18:16Ethan chose to come here
18:17I didn't invite him
18:19Vivian lunged
18:20Ethan caught her around the waist
18:21You keep saying I'm the one holding him here
18:24But you might want to ask yourself
18:26Who's been clinging to whom?
18:27Need me to call the police?
18:28I turned
18:29That man's been bothering you for two weeks
18:30I'm handling it
18:32Lucky lunged sideways to sniff bear
18:33The leashes were tangled
18:34Completely
18:35Lucky
18:36No
18:36Sit
18:37This is your dog's fault
18:40Objection
18:40Instigation was mutual
18:41It was your dog's fault
18:47Objection
18:47Instigation was mutual
18:49I laughed
18:50Julian looked at me
18:51And something softened in his eyes
18:52I turned
18:53Ethan stood to the side
18:54He was staring at me
18:55Julian handed my leash back
18:57Our fingers brushed
18:58Morning walk tomorrow
18:59Together?
19:00I looked at him
19:00He stood to the side
19:02Ethan turned and walked back into his empty house
19:04Three days later
19:06Afternoon
19:06Someone knocked on my door
19:08I opened it
19:08And a wall of camera flashes exploded in my face
19:11Reporters
19:11A dozen of them
19:12And in the middle of them
19:13Arms crossed
19:14Smiling
19:14Vivian
19:15Is it true you're using money and emotional blackmail to keep Dr. Cole from returning to Boston?
19:20Dr. Cole reportedly abandoned a cardiac clinical trial after following you to California
19:24How many patients have been affected?
19:25You were a gallery assistant
19:27Where did the money for this oceanfront property come from?
19:29Lucky went insane at my feet
19:31Barking at every lens
19:32Vivian stepped forward
19:33Dr. Ethan Cole is one of the most gifted cardiac surgeons in the country
19:36Patients are waiting for him
19:37Research has been suspended because he is here chasing a woman who refuses to let him go
19:41Mia Sinclair refused to lend $200,000 to research that could save lives
19:45Yet she spent millions on an oceanfront mansion
19:47The public deserves to know how many lives one wealthy woman's kerosene is allowed to cost
19:55I never asked Ethan to come here
19:56I never asked him to leave his patients
19:58And I never used hospital funding to control him
20:00Vivian smiled as if she'd been waiting for that answer
20:03Then tell him to go back
20:04His career is not my responsibility
20:06His choices are not my responsibility
20:08And neither are yours
20:09Then Ethan came shoving through the crown
20:11He grabbed Vivian's arm and pulled her away from him
20:14What did you do?
20:15Vivian lifted her chin
20:16What you were too weak to do
20:18I'm reminding you who you are
20:20By bringing reporters to Mia's home?
20:22They won't leave until they get the truth
20:23There's nothing I can do
20:25Ethan turned toward the cameras
20:26I came to California because I refused to accept that our relationship was over
20:30That was my choice
20:30Mine alone
20:31Ethan
20:33Dr. Shaw organized this because she believes being a doctor gives her the right to interfere in Mia's life
20:37I did it for your patients
20:38No
20:40Don't hide behind patients to excuse what you did
20:46Julian stepped over his fence
20:48He planted himself between me and the cameras
20:50I'm Julian Reed, Ms. Sinclair's attorney
20:52From this moment on, all questions go through me
20:54You are standing on private property after being told to leave
20:57Every threat, every question, and every second of this harassment is being documented
21:01He slowly scanned the crowd
21:03Leave now
21:03If you publish claims you cannot prove, my office will respond
21:07Porter lowered his camera
21:08Someone said
21:09It's a misunderstanding
21:10Then I suggest you correct that misunderstanding
21:14Before it becomes very expensive
21:15His eyes landed on Vivian
21:17One more thing
21:18Before you all run home to investigate her funding sources
21:20I suggest you check one piece of public information first
21:22The Cardiac Center at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Boston
21:25What is its full legal name?
21:27I watched Vivian's face change
21:28Watched her stagger back half a step
21:34The Cardiac Center Dr. Shaw claims to be protecting was built with funding from the Sinclair Foundation
21:40Her own fellowship carries the Sinclair name
21:43Before accusing Mia Sinclair of taking money from anyone
21:46I suggest you find out how much her family has already given
21:48As the last news van pulled away, Ethan walked toward us
21:51Julian immediately shifted half a step in front of me
21:54Ethan stopped
21:54He didn't try to come closer
21:56Vivian contacted the reporters herself
21:58The messages, the payments, the story she gave them
22:00It's all here
22:01Julian didn't take it
22:03Why are you giving me this?
22:04Because I spent too long protecting her from the consequences of what she did
22:07Ethan looked at me
22:08I'm not doing it again
22:09I know
22:10You could damage your own career
22:12Ethan's hand remained outstretched
22:14Then that's the price
22:16Your decision
22:17I'm hiring you
22:18Handle all of it
22:19Only if that's what you want
22:20It is
22:21Then I'll handle it
22:25Four months later
22:26The media outlet settled
22:27They issued public apologies
22:28Removed the false stories
22:29And paid damages
22:30A permanent restraining order kept Vivian away from me
22:33St. Vincent's placed her on administrative leave
22:35And the medical board opened an investigation into her conduct
22:39Outside the final hearing
22:40I stopped at the top of the courthouse steps
22:42Vivian stood below with Ethan
22:45I was trying to save your career
22:46Ethan looked exhausted
22:50You brought reporters to her home
22:51Because she was controlling you
22:53You belong in an operating room
22:55Not across the street from some gallery girl
22:56Begging her to take you back
22:58Vivian stepped closer
22:59Tell the hospital I acted out of concern for the cardiac program
23:01Withdraw your statement
23:02Come back to Boston
23:03And we can still save the trial
23:05No
23:06Vivian froze
23:09You knew how I felt about you
23:10From the beginning
23:11You never once told me to keep my distance
23:13You're right
23:15Then come back with me
23:16I told myself it was professional
23:18Because admitting the truth
23:19Would mean admitting I'd betrayed Mia
23:21I loved Mia
23:21I never stopped
23:22But I fell in love with you too
23:24And every time I chose that feeling
23:25It cost me her
23:26Vivian's eyes veiled with tears
23:27So the ticket was right
23:28Ethan looked up the courthouse steps
23:30At me
23:31It was always right
23:32Vivian grabbed his arm
23:33Then choose me
23:34Ethan removed her hand
23:37No
23:38You're gonna throw everything away
23:40For a woman who doesn't even want you?
23:41I'm going back to Boston
23:42But not for you
23:43For my patience
23:44For the work I abandoned when I came here
23:47I gave the hospital every message
23:49I won't withdraw my statement
23:50And I won't lie to protect you again
23:52If the truth damages my career
23:53Then that's a consequence I earned
23:58You're right
24:00Then come back with me
24:02I told myself it was professional
24:03Because admitting the truth
24:04Would mean admitting I'd betrayed Mia
24:06I loved Mia
24:07I never stopped
24:07But I fell in love with you too
24:09And every time I chose that feeling
24:10It cost me her
24:11Vivian's eyes veiled with tears
24:12So the ticket was right?
24:13Ethan looked up the courthouse steps
24:15At me
24:16It was always right
24:17Vivian grabbed his arm
24:18Then choose me
24:19Ethan removed her hand
24:22No
24:23You're gonna throw everything away
24:25For a woman who doesn't even want you?
24:26I'm going back to Boston
24:27But not for you
24:28For my patience
24:29For the work I abandoned when I came here
24:32I gave the hospital every message
24:34I won't withdraw my statement
24:35And I won't lie to protect you again
24:37If the truth damages my career
24:38Then that's a consequence I earned
24:39That night
24:40Someone knocked on my door
24:41I looked through the peephole
24:42Ethan
24:42I didn't open the door
24:47I'm going back to Boston tomorrow
24:48I gave the hospital everything
24:50I told them about the research money
24:51The house
24:52And every time I ignored what Vivian was doing
24:54Because I didn't want to lose her
24:55The ticket was right, Mia
24:57I never stopped loving you
24:58That was the truth I kept hiding behind
24:59But I fell in love with her too
25:01I was lying to you and to myself
25:04I closed my eyes
25:05I had your parents' house professionally restored
25:06The piano, the sailboat model
25:08Everything that could be saved
25:09Your attorney has the reports and the new keys
25:11I know it doesn't repair what I did
25:12I just wanted to tell you the truth before I left
25:14Then he was gone
25:17I waited until the ocean was the only sound left
25:19Before opening the door
25:20A single quarter rested on the doorstep
25:22After Ethan left, my life went quiet
25:24One evening, Julian handed me one
25:26And I froze
25:27Chocolate cake
25:28Chocolate filling
25:28The exact kind
25:29I had it shipped overnight from Rosie's
25:31I heard you mention it once
25:33I stared at the box
25:34I'd mentioned it once
25:36Mia?
25:37Is it the wrong kind?
25:39No
25:39My voice came out thick
25:40It's exactly right
25:41Bonfire night on the beach
25:43The wind blew my hair across my face
25:45Julian reached over and tucked it behind my ear
25:51Bonfire night on the beach
25:53The wind blew my hair across my face
25:55Julian reached over and tucked it behind my ear
25:58I'm not rushing you
26:00Whenever you're ready, I'll be here
26:02I looked at his profile in the firelight
26:04My heart skipped
26:05One year later
26:06Malibu at sunset
26:08Julian dropped to one knee in the sand
26:10Lucky sat beside him
26:11A ring box held gently in his mouth
26:13Mia Sinclair
26:14His eyes shone
26:15I won't make you a vow
26:17Vows are too light
26:19I just want to spend every day after this proving it to you
26:22Marry me
26:22I didn't answer right away
26:24Instead, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a quarter
26:26I balanced it on my thumb
26:27One last wish
26:28One last answer
26:29If Julian Reed truly loves me
26:31Then I stopped
26:32I don't need the universe to tell me anymore
26:34I slipped a quarter back into my pocket
26:36Yes, Julian
26:37I'll marry you
26:41Julian pressed his lips to my hair
26:42Are you sure?
26:43I held him tighter
26:44For the first time, I didn't need a wish
26:45I already knew the truth
27:03I haven't seen the truth
27:03I won't know what you said
27:03I just want to know what you said
27:04I had to be a happy teacher
27:04I still want to know what you said
27:04I have to be a teenager
27:04I got to be a teacher
27:04I don't know what you said
27:04So they'll be a girl
