00:00Shout out to my father, you know, my father has been a part of my journey ever since I was
00:04a little kid, so I always went by DJ, but I've also wanted to change my name to Derek so
00:09he can hear his name out there in the stadium since he makes his way, takes his time to make
00:13it every game, so I just want him to also let him get his name out there while I'm naked.
00:17So it was a blessing. I was surprised. Also, I found out when everybody else found out, but it's just
00:25one of those things that's a testament to the type of kid he is. We've been together a long time.
00:29I've been coaching him since he was five all the way into middle school, so football has always been the
00:35center point.
00:35We missed one, his Utah State game his freshman year at James Madison, but every game at JMU after that,
00:44being out here, we've been back and forth coast to coast, so we support him every chance we did.
00:50So we always knew that there was something great coming, and just hearing my name just is a handshake for
00:57him and me, and it's just a blessing to hear him.
00:59He's a great dad. We've met since day one, first day I've met him, so it's good to see what
01:05he's building here, and I'm excited because we're not at the top yet, but I know we're on the way.
01:10I feel as though GD at UCLA is starting to try to build his legacy as a young adult, and
01:17he wanted to make sure that he honored my parents by changing it to Dean, who really put into this
01:26journey to get him here.
01:28But also for himself as a young man to have a name that he wants to build this legacy with,
01:34being at UCLA and on this big stage now.
01:37I don't even think I have the words to explain how much that meant to me.
01:41It was almost an acknowledgment of the sacrifices that go into getting a player to this level.
01:50That's right.isse!
