00:00Airbnb is banning the checkout chore list
00:02that hosts leave for you,
00:03and a petition to stop it
00:05already has more than 5,000 signatures.
00:08Here's what's happening.
00:08For reservations booked from November 20th,
00:11hosts can no longer require you to strip beds,
00:13wash dishes, start laundry, or take trash off site,
00:16and they can't fine you for skipping it.
00:18You can still be asked to do things
00:20like put dishes in the sink,
00:21and guests still have to leave the place
00:23in a reasonable condition.
00:24Airbnb's reason?
00:26House rules have become confusing,
00:27onerous, and hard to manage.
00:30The petition, started by host Harry Newington,
00:32says self-catering rentals are not hotels.
00:34One host wrote that guests now get complete freedom
00:37to be lazy while hosts bear the risk.
00:40But rental management CEO Dennis Goadheed
00:42calls the changes overdue.
00:44Charging a cleaning fee and handing over a chore list,
00:46he says, never felt like hospitality.
00:49The company's seven house rules are still binding,
00:51like no pets, no parties, and quiet hours,
00:53but cleaning is not a house rule.
00:55Airbnb says guests must follow rules,
00:58and are encouraged to comply with requests.
01:00The cleaning fee itself, though, is not changing.
01:02Hosts say that the work guests used to do,
01:04now has to be paid for, and that lands in the price.
01:07So should you have to wash the dishes you used,
01:10or is that what the cleaning fee is for?
