Chancellor John Healey says he has "reprioritised" spending on defence in government to fully fund the defence investment plan – which he says wasn't done under Sir Keir Starmer's government. In his Budget speech, Healey said he would set out next year how the UK would reach 3% of GDP on defence spending by 2030. Report by Keechl. 00:00Now, I've done two things today which were part of why I resigned as Defence Secretary.
00:05First of all, I have fully funded the first step, the Defence Investment Plan.
00:11That was not done by the previous Prime Minister and Chancellor.
00:15That's involved hard choices. It's reprioritising within government
00:19the sort of tough spending controls that any government needs to have.
00:24And secondly, I've said, next year as we plan our multi-year financing and spending plans for the future,
00:33we will not only set out a path that meets our NATO commitment in 2035,
00:38but we will in 2030 also have the target date of hitting 3% of our GDP, our national income,
00:46in 2030,
00:47which was what I said Britain needs and this government must do.
