All the 203 residents of the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship have disembarked in Cambodia after being told to do so by the ship operator. The captain said on Thursday (Oct 29) that it was "painful" for him and his crew to leave after soaring fuel prices forced them to cease operations.

The ship had been cruising the world for at least 755 days as one of only a handful of ships that offered passengers the opportunity to rent or buy long-term or even permanent residences on board.

00:56203 passengers had to leave the ship even if it was really painful for us because we consider
01:06our residents, we call residents not passengers, as a family. Unfortunately due to the shortage
01:13of fuel we needed to shut down one generator, chiller, not essential light and this of course
01:23would have created discomfort to the residents which we don't want that. So we kindly ask to
01:34the residents to get off the ship because our fuel situation was critical. We gave at
01:43least 24 hours notice. We gave it to more than 24 hour notice. So more than this we were not
01:54in the
01:54possibility to provide more. We understand that how worrying this situation can be especially when
02:08the passengers affected. They are far from home and family.
