Sophie Turner sits down with Refinery29 and talks about her must have items on set, why therapy is the best self-care, and her obstacles while filming Dark Phoenix.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Sophie Turner, and you are watching Refinery29.
00:09Honestly, it was like, there was so much pain in my crotch filming this movie,
00:14because I had to fly on wires, and I also had this bike seat that I had to sit on,
00:19that I just had to dangle off.
00:23So that was probably the biggest thing.
00:24Lots of padding.
00:26By the end of the movie, I was just, I looked like I had a really big dick.
00:34I would love to just eat as much pasta every day and not gain any weight or get bloated or
00:40anything like that.
00:41I would just, all I want to do is eat pasta.
00:43I think I'm addicted to gluten.
00:49Okay, this is the one and only important staple in my self-care routine, is therapy.
00:58Therapy.
00:59I think everyone needs a therapist.
01:00I think it's so important to just have that time to kind of talk about your feelings,
01:04talk to someone about something,
01:07so that there's no kind of feeling of being ashamed for something that you're feeling.
01:13You can talk about it with someone who is non-judgmental,
01:17who is not biased in any way,
01:19and it really kind of just helps you decompress and get through the day,
01:23and I think therapy is one of the most important things that I've done.
01:35I would film with Catherine Hepburn.
01:37I think she's such a badass.
01:38I would love, and one of the greatest actors ever.
01:41I would film with her.
01:45It felt very uncomfortable to wear a superhero costume.
01:48They're not very bendy.
01:49They're not very, you can't really move that well in them.
01:52They're actually quite uncomfortable.
02:01When I was growing up, I didn't see many female leads in superhero movies,
02:05and so I think it would kind of blow my mind that I would be able to do that,
02:09so I wish baby Sophie knew that.
02:15Every role that I take has an impact on me in one way or another.
02:20With Game of Thrones, with Sansa, I try to kind of take on her resilience.
02:25With Jean, again, it's kind of that message of embracing those things that make you different.
02:35It's wonderful working in a film that has more female leads than male leads.
02:41That's true.
02:43That's very exciting.
02:43And not only are there so many female leads, but none of them are kind of gratuitous.
02:49None of them are kind of, here's your token female.
02:52Like, have this person in there just to please everyone.
02:54They're actually written really honestly, and I feel like they're quite accurate depictions of what a woman is.
03:01And that's just really exciting for me.
03:07Oh, I have two must-have items for me on set.
03:10I need green tea, and I need a pillow, because I have to sleep.
03:15I cannot get through a day without having, at least collectively, three hours of sleep on set.
03:22Otherwise, I will not give you a good performance.
03:24And I need green tea to wake me up after my naps.
03:30My personal trick on how I remember lines is I record the other lines into a voice recorder on my
03:36phone.
03:37And I'll kind of read over the script once, and then I'll just cover it up and play the other
03:43lines
03:44and try and naturally kind of feel what the line would be.
03:47And the majority of the time, if it's good writing in the script, you get it right.
03:55It's amazing working alongside Jessica.
03:57Jessica is one of my favorite actors ever.
04:00And, you know, just one of the most talented actors out there.
04:04She dances, she sings on set.
04:06She's really, really fun.
04:09She's just, she's a little troublemaker, that one.
04:16Oh, any BTS memories on set of Dark Phoenix?
04:20Jessica and I pranked James once, James McAvoy on the set.
04:25He was, he was in, on, he was on Wires.
04:28We decided that we would kind of, on the last shot, we would have the crew play the Macarena
04:36on loudspeaker around the set.
04:39And then we would have the stuntmen kind of puppeteer him on the, on the Wires, which was really funny.
04:51I hope that they take away that when you embrace these things that make you different,
04:56that might have made you feel ashamed or, or, or, or you were ostracized for,
05:03those are the things that make you special and powerful.
