Skateboarder Anna Mae Dutton is poetic, feminine, and gnarly all at the same time.

00:04Try that one again!
00:10I love the parallels in skateboarding and in floral design.
00:18You build a structure and then you design your story, you design your lines.
00:23And like how there's an arc of the bowl, you know there's like an arc in your flower arrangements.
00:28Like you want movement, you want a complete story.
00:39I'm Anna Mae Dutton and I'm a florist and a skateboarder.
00:43With skateboarding you do something over and over and over again.
00:47With flower arranging you make them again and again and again and again and that's how you become fluid in
00:53your craft.
00:54You just do it.
00:59I skateboard because I don't know how not to.
01:02I've been doing it since I was a kid and it's an impulse for me like dancing when there's music.
01:08It gives me endorphins, it gives me joy, thrills and some injuries.
01:13But that's par for the course.
01:16Like if I bring in a darker purple, yeah I like that better.
01:23I'm going to bring this as a backup just in case I change my mind.
01:27Floral design to me is like a physical embodiment of a poem.
01:32You know there's a relationship to your blossoms and how the color will move through its story and the depth
01:41and the textures all have a relationship to one another.
01:45You know with skateboarding you also have a relationship with movement obviously.
02:02Within the world of skateboarding I'm definitely an outsider.
02:05If there's a barrier for female skaters, sure there's a barrier for any outlier of what people think you should
02:12and should not be doing.
02:13But who wants to pay attention to that?
