00:10When I first met Ryan, he made it very clear to me that he was not a pianist.
00:15He had played by ear a little bit, but didn't have any technique, didn't read music, but I knew that
00:20he was a very musical guy already.
00:22He told me he barely played before he started learning for this film.
00:27It was a very new challenge to teach somebody who had never played piano, jazz piano in particular.
00:33So jazz is its own animal, and there are very specific things that happen in jazz that maybe don't happen
00:39in other styles of music.
00:42He wanted to actually be able to play everything.
00:45The time element was not really going to make sense for him to learn to read music.
00:49There wasn't time to learn to read and to play all that stuff.
00:52So he learned everything by rote.
00:54I showed him.
00:55He thought about it.
00:55He tried it.
00:56We went over in Oregon.
00:58He memorized it.
00:59And he was very, very committed, as I was, to try to get it as close as possible.
01:06We worked together two hours a day, usually five days a week, sometimes six days a week.
01:12Sometimes he would videotape me playing it and watch it later.
01:16It was really one of the most fulfilling pre-production periods I've ever had.
