00:00You do everything as if you're in a relationship, but you're not.
00:14Lovely.
00:15Two people could be texting each other and they're just like,
00:18hey, you want to start dating? Yeah, sure.
00:19And they're just like, I love you, I love you too.
00:21And it's only been an hour since they met.
00:23Except now they actually talk to each other.
00:26I feel like there's less talking.
00:28I feel like it's texting.
00:30The phones are talking like that, yeah.
00:31People don't talk.
00:32It's like, you know, they're texting, hey, you want to hook up?
00:34I'm in my 30s.
00:35I have an umbrella policy.
00:36It's all frivolous until it's something.
00:40A lot of my friends say like, oh, I have a boyfriend.
00:43And I'm like, oh, okay, sir.
00:45Now at 40, do you say boyfriend?
00:48It's been very, like, my boyfriend.
00:51Somebody told me that the proper word was boyfriend.
00:55I wasn't sure how to introduce him.
00:58No, this friend explained.
01:00Are you sleeping together?
01:02Well, yeah.
01:04Well, then he's your boyfriend.
01:05Does he fit my lifestyle?
01:07Does he, you know, is my family going to improve?
01:09I'd never used to think of that until now.
01:11Yeah, and thinking about the qualities that, like, make for partnership,
01:14which aren't necessarily qualities that make for a great person to date.
01:17If you're talking about Yanni Depp or Taylor Lautner, then that's one thing.
01:23But to have a crush on a little boy with glasses, then that's different.
01:28That's different.
01:29I am confused about what the term hooked up, hooking up means.
01:34Did you kiss or did you do anything?
01:36Yeah, hooked up can be something.
01:37My 20-year-old, like, the people that I know that are 20, they're like, you guys are, like, the
01:40hookup generation.
01:40Just the fact that we're known as the hookup generation.
01:45When I was dating in the 60s and then into the 70s, and we're talking the, you know, the hippies
01:51and free love and anything goes,
01:53and it was a wild time back then.
01:56I mean, it may be a little bit similar to what this hookup stuff is these days.
01:59I think people live in this gray area now.
02:02It's the weirdest thing.
02:04I talk to my friends, and she'll tell me she's dating someone for the long, dating.
02:10I've been one for the longest time, or they're hooking up.
02:13Well, what are you guys doing?
02:14It's been a year.
02:15Oh, I mean, we're just kind of, you know, hanging out.
02:18Hanging out is not dating.
02:19Hanging out is definitely...
02:21Friends with benefits.
02:24Booty call.
02:25Booty call?
02:26I've done one of those.
02:27Oh, that's so bad.
02:28I have, real late.
02:29I think the funniest thing ever that my daughter said was bae, for babe.
02:34The nomenclature is very strange to me.
02:37B-A-E.
02:38Before anyone else.
02:39We're talking.
02:40What does that mean?
02:41Are you dating?
02:42Getting drinks?
02:43People say like...
02:44Getting drinks.
02:45Yeah.
02:46What are you doing?
02:46We're getting drinks.
02:47We've been getting drinks.
02:48Oh, what about when you're like, um, when you just say like...
02:52You're like, well, this friend of mine.
02:55People are just so afraid to just say what it is, or just not do it the right way, but
03:00just
03:00be real about what you're doing.
03:02I think we come from the old school of you just communicate.
03:06It's always the two people that are ignoring each other the most.
03:11They're together.
03:12Like, the people that like give the most attention and they're all over each other.
03:16Yeah, they're for sure friends.
03:17Well, we can't talk about the dating culture without talking about the internet, can we?
03:22Hey, ladies.
03:22Oh, dude, I'm on like every dating app that's free.
03:25Direct messaging on Instagram if you can't get someone's number.
03:28Oh, yeah.
03:28Like...
03:29Oh, yes.
03:31Snapchat, all that stuff.
03:32Makes, like, the idea of dating so nonchalant.
03:36You know, when computer dating started, do you remember when it first started?
03:39And it was kind of a hush-hush.
03:42People who met on the internet didn't admit it.
03:45You know, I hear people like, oh, how did you meet him?
03:47Oh, through Twitter.
03:48I saw you on Instagram.
03:49Yeah.
03:49You're really cute.
03:50My single friend started showing me Tinder the other day.
03:53It's just like low risk, which maybe is a good thing.
03:55I don't know.
03:56But it's just kind of like, oh, I don't like you.
03:59Swipe.
03:59Everything that you see on an online profile, like, it's so much worse than meeting someone
04:04in person because you're so much more unforgiving.
04:06Like, everything people say or do that seems like a little off-putting is so magnified that
04:12it's hard to, like, open yourself up to it.
04:14I want to just be able to say hi to somebody and not have them freak out.
04:18We should be doing this via a screen.
04:20With each passing year that I don't meet my perfect partner, I'm just like, well, I'm not
04:25worried, like, I'm not worried about it.
04:27I can't wait to see what the universe, like, the universe has been holding out this long,
04:30like, probably a Dr. Anna model.
04:32The problem is sometimes we just got to shut it all down, the technology, and just be people
04:37and be present.
04:38Look cute and go outside.
04:39That's all I try to do.
04:40Look cute and go outside.
04:41Well, you do that.
04:42It's about, like, things that I need to experience.
04:44And if you're down to experience that with me, then, like, it's a date.
