00:00First of all, I will always defend Planned Parenthood.
00:05The 2016 election season is in full swing and for the first time in history,
00:10Planned Parenthood has made an endorsement in the primaries and it's for Hillary Clinton's
00:13presidential bid. To find out why and understand what's at stake for women's health this year,
00:18Refinery29 was invited to sit down with Hillary Clinton and Planned Parenthood
00:22President Cecile Richards for an exclusive conversation.
00:25Thank you so much for joining us today, Secretary Clinton and Cecile.
00:29Thank you. We're pretty excited.
00:31We're here because Planned Parenthood is endorsing your candidacy for president.
00:37I could not be more grateful and prouder to have this endorsement.
00:41When it comes to who you need in the White House, you need a fighter and you need someone who's
00:45going
00:45to go toe-to-toe with folks who unfortunately are in office and who have shown that they're willing
00:50to try to take away women's rights. That's why we need Secretary Clinton in the White House.
00:54We have millions of patients every year and they come from every walk of life.
00:58And they are Republicans as well as Democrats and independents and everything in between.
01:03So I think it's so important to recognize. I think one of the reasons we want to get involved
01:07in this election early is because it's not only about reproductive health care access,
01:11which is fundamentally important, but for many women, we are the only doctor they will see this year.
01:16We have an agenda setting up that line of defense to secure women's rights,
01:22to be able to empower women to live up to their own potential. All the work we've done over so
01:27many
01:27generations. This election will determine whether Roe versus Wade continues to be the law of the land,
01:34whether women and families make their own childbearing decisions, not politicians,
01:39and whether women can continue to seek care from Planned Parenthood.
01:43Last year, both of you had epic congressional hearings. And I wanted to know, do you trade notes?
01:50Do you offer advice to each other ever? Well, I learned a lot watching Cecile.
01:56One of my friends texted me. She said, just bring the rage of centuries of women with you
02:00into the room. And also, actually, at the break, my son Daniel texted me. He said, I'm so proud of
02:08you,
02:08mom. I think you raising me as a child really prepared you for this hearing today.
02:14In this generation of women, we're seeing shout your abortion as a hashtag. We're seeing
02:19one in three where women are attaching their names to their abortion stories, which is pretty new.
02:25Do you think this is a positive change? Beyond all the statistics, beyond all of the partisan
02:30bickering and back and forth, every generation has to really understand how important it is to preserve,
02:39to defend, to extend the rights that have been passed on year to year to year. All of that would
02:47not get repealed because we would have a line of defense to prevent it. I know what's at stake. And
02:53I
02:54know that we're lucky in our country because we have dedicated providers like the people who
03:00go to work every single day at Planned Parenthood. And what a difference it has made for nearly a
03:05hundred years in millions of people's lives. I believe we need to protect access to safe and
03:12legal abortion, not just in principle, but in practice. Any right that requires you to take
03:18extraordinary measures to access it is no right at all. Together, we can have the America that
03:27we all believe is possible. And I need your help to do that. I need your help starting here in
03:34the
03:34New Hampshire primary, in the Iowa caucus. We can win this election. We can build that better future.
03:42And yes, indeed, a future where a father can tell his daughter, you can be anything you want to be,
03:49including President of the United States. Thank you all very much.
