Transcript
00:00Hi dad. Hi Jacqueline. Thanks for coming. Great to be here.
00:20You know I kind of see the journey as I was a sensitive you know child like many
00:26and you know through all these like self-help and and psychology kind of
00:31stuff I mean I was like a Tony Robbins like expert I tell all my friends you
00:35know about like breaking the the four legs out under the table of a limiting
00:39belief literally and like just like I was also really disgusted by how like or
00:43just like really thought it was shocking the way like people around me in like
00:47eighth grade like like just like thought that their mood was determined by their
00:51circumstances you know I mean like I was like god like what fools you know then I
00:55kind of then when I started experiencing you know the depression I I was very
01:00confused because I was like I'm obviously doing something wrong I'm think you know
01:03I'm not thinking the right way you know I tend to be optimistic about things I
01:07think you do too I mean that's the thing with depression people I was oh what
01:11could be wrong everything's good in your life well it doesn't work that way
01:14everything can be good in your life you're still depressed because it it has
01:17it's on its own level on its own plane and yeah so I was always thinking what's
01:24the next step what what do we do now given the situation so I was always
01:27looking to the next move like a big thing when I was nervous was like you
01:31would encourage me to like go into like a wild like skip and then jump up in the
01:35air and say do you remember thank God my feet don't stink today that comes
01:40straight out of Tony and it's so hysterical there's no way you can stand in
01:44bad mood and and and do that jump up in the air kick you you know kick your heels
01:47together pump your fist and say thank God my feet don't stink today do you see a
01:59difference in me from where I was yes absolutely you must because I no longer
02:07live with you right the step I remember one time mom being like I always feel
02:11embarrassed about this moment because it's so like dramatic you know like I
02:15remember one time mom coming in while I was doing one of my kundalini yoga
02:19videos and it's a point where you're doing these mantras and these breath and
02:25it's like you know something about like working out your deepest pain or like
02:29however horrible your situation is right now whatever and if you're doing it and
02:33then like mom said something like what it what is your suffering or something or
02:37like you know like what is it what is your what is your pain or something and I was
02:41like what isn't I was like what and I was referring to literally like I'm 26 like
02:49you know like 26 and I'm in your dead like like kind of a star you know it's
02:58funny there's a it's it's a cultural thing when you're a parent and you have
03:02kids and you talk to the other parents and and particularly when they're kid that
03:06you and you hear this that I just want my kid to be oh oh my god okay and that's
03:11one of the most lamest things anybody could say I agree and and you hear all
03:15the time I don't care how much money as long as they're happy oh my god happy how
03:19dare they say that no no and it's such a limiting concept I mean if you study
03:24psychology or study philosophy or something you know that you know first
03:29there's this sort of abstract concept of happiness okay I know what that means but
03:34then in order to understand what even that means you have to think of
03:37something that's unhappy you have to go to you have to negate that right you have
03:41to think of sad things in your life or sad things that exist or whatever people
03:44okay yeah and then to achieve true happiness then concrete happiness you
03:49have to surprise that yeah you have to triumph over that right so there's not
03:56there's no pure happiness without pure sadness right I mean you know Jung talked
04:00about this yeah philosophers have talked about it so just say I what do you what
04:05do you want your children to do does that do you want you want them to be to sit
04:08there and and and take drugs or something or get a drink and be fat dumb and
04:14happy yeah it's not yeah yeah so these parents to say this I don't know what
04:18they're talking about it's a meaningless thing yeah it's an annoying and that they
04:22think they're they think you know they think they're being generous okay okay he
04:27doesn't need to be a doctor he doesn't need to be a right long but he's happy
04:32and it's like it's not a worthy goal to have for your children you want them to
04:36you want them to go beyond what they're what they what's what the given and not
04:40to arrive at a at a at a then permanent bliss it's not like it's not like you
04:45want them to be have struggle so they can then arrive at you know you don't
04:49want great happiness no you don't want to create the struggles but everybody
04:52everybody in life has struggles it just yeah I mean if yeah if they don't admit
04:57to that at least to themselves they probably should go to a shrink or
04:59something because that's everybody you know it's got the cross to bear in some
05:03way or another everybody and to go to go beyond that is is that's where the I
05:10think the true happiness is hi I'm Greg Novak I'm Jacqueline Novak's dad and this
