00:00This is not New York.
00:06Austin is one of the fastest growing cities in America.
00:10So I came to Texas to discover what makes Austin, Austin.
00:15This is insane.
00:18How would you define Austin's culture?
00:20The really funky food and the music community.
00:23It's all just kind of crazy Austin culture.
00:25To get a real sense of the city, I need to check out the art, the music, and the food.
00:31But my first stop is vintage shopping so that I can get a feel for the heart of the city.
00:35And of course, pick up a unique souvenir or two.
00:39Hi, I had a blast running through here. I didn't break a thing.
00:43Tell me more about this store.
00:46So we're set up a bit like an antique mall.
00:48I think that our shop reflects Austin pretty profoundly because you never know what you're going to find.
00:54So the unexpected is what you should expect here.
00:58Expect the unexpected, huh?
00:59I think I'll fit right in.
01:01When in Texas, you've got to get a pair of cowboy boots.
01:05And I think I've come to the right place.
01:07So looking for comfortably snug, no pinching in the toes, a little slip in the heel.
01:11Yeah, a little slip in the heel.
01:12Yeah.
01:17I feel like a lady.
01:18Thank you so much.
01:19You're welcome.
01:20I love my new boots.
01:24All of that shopping made me a little bit hungry.
01:27So I met up with the renowned chef at Moonshine for some combo and comestibles.
01:48I can't believe you're eating all this food.
01:49This is amazing.
01:51Austin is a fantastic city, booming with culinary arts.
01:54You know, last year, 100 restaurants opened in Austin.
01:57This apple pie is seriously so good.
02:02Thank you so much.
02:04Can't wait to eat my way through the rest of Austin.
02:08With shopping and food behind me, I decided to delve into the local art scene.
02:16Isn't this cool?
02:17This is like a community graffiti gallery that the city of Austin welcomes anyone to tag.
02:23And I'm going to take them up on them.
02:25I'll tell my mom.
02:30This rules.
02:33What is authentic Austin?
02:35Well, you got to go to Barton Springs.
02:38Pretty much the best, uh, baptism.
02:41I finally made it to Barton Springs, an oasis in the middle of the city.
02:46And to me, this place kind of looks like a mirage.
02:49I'm going to go ahead and get in there.
02:52I'm going to go.
02:53I'm going to go.
02:54I'm going to go.
02:58I'm going to go.
03:00Paddleboarding, swimming, and art time?
03:02Yeah.
03:03It's time to dine once again.
03:05And dinner in Austin can only mean one thing.
03:07Barbecue.
03:10Now, that's a rib.
03:12How does the barbecue play into the history of Austin and Austin Barbecue?
03:16Well, the owner, Leanne Miller, um, her dad wanted James Beard for American Classic for
03:23Louis Miller Barbecue.
03:24I feel like he just kind of, you know, set the bar and made people so passionate about
03:28Set the barbecue.
03:31That's a good one.
03:32It wouldn't be a trip to Austin without exploring the local music scene.
03:36And the Continental Club on Congress Street is a landmark.
03:39I was lucky enough to chat with its owner before the show.
03:41How is music central to the culture and the heartbeat of Austin?
03:46There's 50 clubs in town that feature live music every night, from blues, to country,
03:50to punk, to rock and roll.
03:53Enough of standing around outside.
03:54We should really take a walk inside.
03:56Oh, I thought you'd never ask my man.
03:57Let's do it.
03:58Art, food, swimming, shopping, music?
04:01Check.
04:01With my epic day in Austin winding down, I had just one thing left to do.
04:06Dance.
04:07Welcome to the Broken Smoke, you guys.
04:09My name is Terry White.
04:10This is my mom and dad's place.
04:11I have absolutely no filter.
04:14Let's do this thing.
04:15One.
04:16Two.
04:16Three.
04:17Hell yes.
04:18Oh my God.
04:19Here we go.
04:24It's been a whirlwind trip in Austin.
04:27I jammed with local bands, I shopped, I swam, I danced with strangers that became friends,
04:32and I ate probably too much.
04:35Throughout it all, I kept Austin weird, and I even discovered what makes this city special.
04:40It's all of it.
04:42So, I'll come back now.
04:44You hear?
