00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this is 5 Days of Sleeping on the Floor.
00:04Here it goes!
00:05Hey guys, it's good to see you. You look good.
00:07So when I saw that one of you commented asking me to try it 5 Days of Sleeping on the
00:11Floor
00:11and I saw how many thumbs up the comment got,
00:15I just knew I had to suck it up and do it.
00:17It doesn't sound fun though, right?
00:19I mean, it's not something I was excited about,
00:21but that's just the way this works.
00:22And I don't only do these challenges for myself,
00:25but I also do them for you so that I can try things you might be interested in
00:28and give you a little taste of it.
00:30So this one is for you, not me.
00:32The first thing I did today was contact a doctor.
00:34I'm not sure if you know who Dr. Mike is, but here's a brief overview.
00:38He has over 2 million Instagram followers.
00:41He's a DO, which is a doctor of osteopathic medicine.
00:44And he's a board-certified family medicine doctor.
00:47So he's the real deal, but he's also my friend.
00:49So earlier today, I FaceTimed with him because I needed to ask him a few questions
00:54before I just dove right onto the floor.
00:56The floor is so hard.
00:57It often cuts off circulation to really important body parts
01:01and it puts pressure on certain body parts that are also very sensitive.
01:06I don't think it's the end of the world.
01:07I don't think you're putting yourself in any danger,
01:09but expect to need an extra cup of coffee in the morning.
01:11To take his skepticism one step further,
01:14I also came across an article online that was written by a Refinery29 wellness writer
01:19telling me basically the exact same thing.
01:21It's not good to sleep on too hard of a surface.
01:23Your quality of sleep might be disrupted, etc, etc.
01:26But, and if you've watched Try Living with Lucy in the past,
01:29you know that there's usually a but.
01:31Not this kind of but.
01:32A quick Google search for sleeping on the floor
01:34yields a whole universe of positive results
01:37from people who say that they swear by this
01:40and that sleeping on the floor has changed their lives,
01:43improved their posture, corrected back pain,
01:45and a whole slew of other things.
01:47That's when it's time for me to just take matters into my own hands
01:50and try it myself.
01:51There's my old sleeping spot
01:55and here's tonight's sleeping spot.
01:58Tonight I'm laying out my yoga mat,
02:00one pillow, and one blanket.
02:02Here we go.
02:07Hi.
02:08I had a ridiculously, horrific, horrendous night's sleep.
02:14I seriously cannot stress this enough.
02:16I actually started out fine,
02:17but as the night progressed,
02:19I felt exactly the opposite
02:21of what the pro sleeping on the floor people say,
02:23which is that your circulation is going to feel improved.
02:26I felt like my circulation was cut off.
02:29I'm not sure if this is scientifically what was happening,
02:31but it did feel like certain pressure points
02:34on the backs of my feet
02:35and also on my back and my tailbone
02:37were just digging into the earth so hard,
02:40cutting off proper circulation.
02:42I was also pretty cold,
02:43which is no surprise because heat rises,
02:46so naturally the floor is going to be the coldest part in the room,
02:49but the blanket I had to protect myself
02:50was just not big enough,
02:52so I would pull it to cover my right arm
02:54and then my left leg would get exposed
02:56and then I'd try to cover my right leg
02:58and my left arm was out in the air.
03:00Highly ineffective blanket.
03:01Anyway, it was just a horrible, horrible night's sleep.
03:04I truly could not not recommend this challenge anymore
03:08than I can right now.
03:09It was just total body soreness
03:12as if I had done some sort of rigorous workout the day before,
03:15which I had not.
03:16So I stretched a little bit
03:18and then I did what Dr. Mike told me
03:19and I poured myself a huge cup of coffee,
03:22which I needed to get through the day.
03:24And tonight, I'm just going to do it all over again.
03:27No, no, no.
03:29I really don't want to.
03:30No, no.
03:34You hear that siren?
03:38Imagine hearing that internally just all night.
03:43I set up for the night with my yoga mat,
03:46two pillows beneath my head this time,
03:48a Tempur-Pedic pillow beneath my body
03:50that I used as a body cushion,
03:52and two blankets this time to keep warm.
03:54I dressed in a long-sleeve and long-pants pajama set
03:57just to keep warmer than I was in my shorts.
04:00And I also had Michael tuck me in like a burrito
04:03before I was going to bed
04:04just to avoid any exposed limbs.
04:06Got my pimple cream on,
04:09ready to get tucked into bed
04:10for round two.
04:13Completely tuck me in.
04:16So I had my butt on the ground,
04:18and then the body pillow was underneath my lower back
04:21all the way up to my neck.
04:22And this caused my back to do a slight arch thing
04:25as I was sleeping,
04:26which is just not comfortable.
04:28Don't ever do that.
04:29I don't know what else to say.
04:31And when I woke up in the morning,
04:32the arch in my back felt as if I had been doing
04:34cow position all night long.
04:36And I don't know if you know yoga well,
04:38but there's a cow where you're arching your back
04:41and then a cat where you're actually rounding your spine.
04:44So when I woke up in the morning
04:45and it felt like,
04:46oh, sirens, stop, I have a headache.
04:50So when I woke up in the morning
04:51and my back was arched like this into cow,
04:54I needed to come into the living room
04:55and do cat position to counteract that arch.
04:59As you can see here,
05:00I've been getting really terrible night sleeps,
05:02like on and off, waking up throughout the night.
05:05I'm feeling sore all over
05:07and really disheveled and tired.
05:09So tonight I'm going to try to switch up
05:11the sleeping location
05:12and I'm actually going to try to sleep out here.
05:15And I'm hoping that a location change
05:17will help a little bit.
05:18Here goes night number three.
05:21Whoop-de-doo.
05:25I feel that it's necessary
05:27for me to start this webcam
05:28by telling you
05:29that this is a perfect embodiment
05:32of the way that I feel right now,
05:34which is just totally torn apart
05:37and disheveled.
05:40I didn't really think that things
05:42could get much worse after Monday and Tuesday,
05:45but I was really, really wrong.
05:49Firstly, I moved away from this floor region
05:51and into the living room
05:52so I could mix it up,
05:53get a new environment, yada, yada, yada.
05:55I brought my yoga mat,
05:56two pillows,
05:57my body pillow,
05:59one big blanket,
06:00and then one small blanket
06:01because it was warmer
06:02so I didn't feel like I needed
06:04two heavy blankets.
06:05And I faced myself towards the television
06:07and created a little makeshift
06:09bedroom area for myself.
06:11This time I put my body pillow
06:13in a lower position
06:14so that it was under my butt too
06:15and it didn't cause that back arch.
06:17And things were actually going great.
06:19I fell asleep pretty easily at first,
06:22but then I was hot,
06:25I was cold,
06:25I was comfortable,
06:26I was not comfortable,
06:28my pillow was too hard,
06:29my pillow was too flimsy.
06:31I must have changed the temperature
06:33in the living room 80 times last night.
06:36The body pillow I used
06:37was a little too squishy
06:38so I took it off
06:38and I replaced it
06:39with a folded blanket
06:40but that was not squishy enough.
06:42It was miserable.
06:45Miserable!
06:46Les miserables status up in here.
06:48And today's been the worst
06:49of the days naturally
06:50because it's now been
06:51the longest amount of time
06:53that I've gone
06:53without a good night's sleep.
06:55So my head has been pounding all day
06:57and I woke up this morning
06:58and I actually tried to go
07:00to a meditation class.
07:01Forget about it,
07:02I cannot do meditation
07:03in the morning
07:04when I haven't slept well
07:05for three days
07:05because I was just so tired
07:08and falling asleep
07:09and of course part
07:10of the meditation practice
07:11was lying down on the floor
07:12and there I was
07:13comfortably sleeping on the floor
07:15in meditation class
07:16yet I can't do that here.
07:18What is the deal?
07:18Tonight I'm going to go
07:19no phone and no TV.
07:21I'm just going to read a book
07:22and hope that it calms my mind
07:24before I try to go to bed.
07:28Guess what guys?
07:29I finally slept.
07:32Woohoo!
07:33Woohoo!
07:34Last night's setup right here
07:36was my yoga mat,
07:37one pillow,
07:38the body pillow,
07:39and one blanket.
07:40So amidst all of my stress yesterday
07:42of me telling my coworkers
07:43how horribly I've been sleeping
07:45and how restless I've been at night,
07:47one of them asked me
07:48which direction I was facing
07:49and that's not something
07:51that ever popped into my mind before
07:53but I told her I was facing north
07:55and her jaw dropped.
07:57She told me to do some research
07:58on feng shui
07:59and the best direction
08:00to face when you sleep
08:02and as I discovered
08:03on many an article
08:05on the internet,
08:06facing north is a recipe
08:08for disaster.
08:09It's called the death position
08:11so that should tell you something.
08:13So last night
08:13in addition to the zen
08:14and calming environment
08:16that I created on the floor,
08:17I was also making sure
08:18that I was facing west
08:20which is supposedly good.
08:22I lit a whole row of candles,
08:24I did a 10 minute meditation practice
08:26sitting up on my yoga mat,
08:28I started a new book,
08:29it was all good,
08:31it was all the best way
08:32to put my mind at ease
08:33and get ready to sleep.
08:35Anyway, tonight is Friday
08:36and it's the last night
08:37of this challenge
08:38and I'm headed back
08:39into the bedroom tonight
08:40using my yoga mat,
08:42two pillows,
08:43and two blankets.
08:44I've got to be honest with you here
08:45because I always try to be honest
08:47on this series.
08:48This is not a challenge
08:50I would recommend
08:51and I'm not doubting
08:52that plenty of people out there
08:53have found sleeping on the floor
08:54has healed their back pain
08:56or corrected their posture
08:57so by all means
08:58if you're one of those people
08:59who loves to do this,
09:01you do you!
09:02But I definitely think
09:03that the biggest thing
09:03to think about here
09:04is being comfortable
09:05and if you're not comfortable
09:07on the floor,
09:07you're not going to get
09:08a good quality of sleep
09:09and if you don't get
09:10good quality of sleep,
09:11that's not good.
09:12Getting bad quality of sleep
09:13this week has made
09:14my mind foggy,
09:16it's given me headaches,
09:17it's made my body ache
09:18and more
09:18so for the rest of my life
09:20I'm going to be on a mattress
09:21unless there's not one in sight.
09:23See you next time.
