00:00Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Oscar nominee, Salma Hayek-Pinot.
00:11Hi. It's nice to see you all again. It's been a while.
00:22It's an honor to be here tonight.
00:24This year, many spoke their truth, and the journey ahead is long,
00:29but slowly, a new path has emerged.
00:34The changes we are witnessing are being driven by the powerful sound of new voices,
00:40of different voices, of our voices,
00:44joining together in a mighty chorus that is finally saying,
00:49Time's up.
00:54So we salute those unstoppable spirits who kicked ass
01:00and broke through the biased perceptions against their gender,
01:07their race, and ethnicity to tell their stories.
01:13And on this 90th anniversary evening, when the Oscars celebrates timeless classics,
01:22we also look forward as well.
01:25And we work together to make sure that the next 90 years empower these limitless possibilities
01:31of equality, diversity, inclusion, intersectionality.
01:37That's what this year has promised us.
01:44So as you can see, so full of emotion, a little bit shaky,
01:50we ask you to join us as we take a look at some of these trailblazers.
01:55This entire fall, the Me Too, the Time's Up movements,
01:59everyone is getting a voice to express something that has been happening forever,
02:05not only in Hollywood, but in every walk of life.
02:09Do they know I'm black?
02:11Should they?
02:12Some of our best work has come from turmoil.
02:16We have been in denial about the things at work.
02:19This moment is exposing the hypocrisy.
02:22These are times that will be long remembered.
02:24What will we be remembered for?
02:26What did we do?
02:27My name's Lady Bird.
02:28It's weird to shake hands.
02:30All the movies I loved were directed by men.
02:32That sort of seemed like a prerequisite.
02:34Some of my favorite movies are movies by straight white dudes about straight white dudes.
02:39Now straight white dudes can watch movies starring me, and you relate to that.
02:43It's not that hard.
02:44I've done it my whole life.
02:46So the sun is just shining down on me like, wow, it's just a party.
02:49The industry has to become sincerely curious about the human essence that has become invisible behind stereotypes.
02:59It's this possibility of the status quo not having to be the status quo any longer.
03:05Can't be considering going...
03:06I'm talking to Mr. Bradley now.
03:09When Thelma and Louise came out, the huge prediction in the press was, this changes everything.
03:15We're going to see so many more movies starring female characters.
03:19That didn't happen.
03:21But this is now that moment.
03:23I've been a trans director in my life for many, many years now.
03:27With the nomination and headline, I was like, oh, I guess this is new for some people.
03:32Some people are really, in their hearts, they're threatened or they're scared.
03:36And they're nothing to be scared of.
03:38It's just equality.
03:40Emily, my wife, had this idea.
03:42She wanted to have a website called Muslims Having Fun, which is just like Muslims eating ice cream and riding
03:49roller coasters and laughing and having fun.
03:51Because she gets to see that in most of America, does it?
03:54You can deconstruct the very way that people see themselves and the way that they are seen.
03:59We are the interpreters of dreams.
04:00And we have a chance to lionize beauty and truth and honor and justice.
04:06Only through originality, we can really get to the heart of real human stories.
04:13There's so many movies from different points of view that are making a ton of money.
04:17Don't do it because it's better for society and representation, even though it is.
04:22Do it because you'll get rich.
04:24You'll get that promotion, right?
04:28Remember, we're going to see Wonder Woman sitting in the theater and hearing women cry.
04:33This big action extravaganza.
04:35And something clicked.
04:36I'll say it.
04:37This is what white men feel all the time.
04:40And all these women are having this experience for the first time.
04:44Imagine it's going to be the same thing when people go and see Black Panther.
04:50Get ready for some more get-outs, for some more Black Panthers.
04:53Get ready for some more wrinkling times.
04:55We're here, and we're not going anywhere.
04:58My son, it is your time.
05:00It's so exciting to imagine an eight-year-old kid seeing themselves on screen in a way they've never seen
05:04before.
05:05Traditional walls have collapsed.
05:06You have a phone that has a camera on it that you can actually make a movie on right now
05:10if you wanted to.
05:11Go make your movie.
05:12We need your movie.
05:13I need your movie.
05:15So go make it.
05:17Go make it.
05:17Go make it.
05:17Go make it.
